A representation of the color gamut of special effect coatings is proposed and shown for six different samples, whose colors were calculated from spectral bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) measurements at different geometries. The most important characteristic of the proposed representation is that it allows a straightforward understanding of the color shift to be done both in terms of conventional irradiation and viewing angles and in terms of flake-based parameters. A different ...

A reduced set of measurement geometries allows the spectral reflectance of special effect coatings to be predicted for any other geometry. A physical model based on flake-related parameters has been used to determine nonredundant measurement geometries for the complete description of the spectral bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF). The analysis of experimental spectral BRDF was carried out by means of principal component analysis. From this analysis, a set of nine measurement ...

Laser light and some optical phenomena present a great potencial of application in analysis of seeds. The dynamic speckle is a phenomena that occurs mainly when laser light reaches the biological material. Nowadays, the tetrazolium test is the most important way of evaluating the viability of seeds. This work has investigated the transmission of laser light through the seed (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) in order to determine the depth which is reached by the laser light in the cotyledons tissue and its ...

This work presents a new technique as a potential methodology to analyse seeds. The technology is known as dynamic speckle, or biospeckle, an optical phenomenon produced when active materials, such as biological tissue, are illuminated by laser light. In the present work, the biological activity of seed tissues has been inferred from quantitative and qualitative measurements of their speckle activity. The aim is to show that the biospeckle technique has a potential as a methodology to assess seed ...

Abstract The medial temporal lobe (MTL) is a nidus for neurodegenerative pathologies and therefore an important region in which to study polypathology. We investigated associations between neurodegenerative pathologies and the thickness of different MTL subregions measured using high-resolution post-mortem MRI. Tau, TAR DNA-binding protein 43 (TDP-43), amyloid-β and α-synuclein pathology were rated on a scale of 0 (absent)—3 (severe) in the hippocampus and entorhinal cortex (ERC) of 58 individuals with ...

We present a method for human brain fixation based on simultaneous perfusion of 4% paraformaldehyde through carotids after a flush with saline. The left carotid cannula is used to perfuse the body with 10% formalin, to allow further use of the body for anatomical research or teaching. The aim of our method is to develop a vascular fixation protocol for the human brain, by adapting protocols that are commonly used in experimental animal studies. We show that a variety of histological procedures can ...

This paper presents an analysis of the time history of speckle patterns (THSP) that is one of the most used procedures to evaluate the biological activity by biospeckle images. THSPs generated by numerical simulations, obtained in a controlled drying of paint experiment and in dead and alive bean seeds under laser illumination were evaluated. We used first- and second-order statistics of the dynamic speckle patterns for different time and spatial amounts of data. We have tested both square and rectangular ...

This research presents results obtained from the application of biospeckle phenomena to detect fungi in beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). The biospeckle is a phenomenon produced naturally when biological material is illuminated by laser light. If it is possible to record the temporal history of the phenomenon, it will be possible to identify, in a seed, areas with different activity. Since the fungi presents biological activity, the method is capable of detecting the presence of fungi. Three species ...

Abstract ZnO films were obtained by electrodeposition technique from commercial Zn 2+ solutions and those obtained from spent alkaline batteries. The type of counterion and pH impact directly on the structural, morphological, and optical properties of the electrodeposited ZnO films. The morphological and crystallographic orientation differences observed by X‐ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and high‐resolution field emission scanning electron microscopy (HR‐FESEM), demonstrates the influence of the ...

High throughput screening (HTS) is routinely used to identify bioactive small molecules. This requires physical compounds, which limits coverage of accessible chemical space. Computational approaches combined with vast on-demand chemical libraries can access far greater chemical space, provided that the predictive accuracy is sufficient to identify useful molecules. Through the largest and most diverse virtual HTS campaign reported to date, comprising 318 individual projects, we demonstrate that ...

The automatic extraction of chemical information from text requires the recognition of chemical entity mentions as one of its key steps. When developing supervised named entity recognition (NER) systems, the availability of a large, manually annotated text corpus is desirable. Furthermore, large corpora permit the robust evaluation and comparison of different approaches that detect chemicals in documents. We present the CHEMDNER corpus, a collection of 10,000 PubMed abstracts that contain a total ...

The dynamic speckle, also known as biospeckle or bioactivity is a phenomenon generated by laser light scattering in biological tissues or in surfaces exhibiting some kind of activity. In our case, seeds tissue has been employed and its activity studied and explored. In this research work we suggest a bio-speckle technique as a potential methodology to analyze seeds viability.

Abstract The phosphoinositide-3-kinase (PI3K) signaling pathway is activated in a variety of solid and non-solid tumors. In many instances this is due to either activating mutations in the catalytic subunit of PI3Kα, p110α, or inactivating mutations or deletions of the tumor suppressor PTEN. In addition, the PI3K pathway is activated by mutations in certain receptor tyrosine kinases as well as by mutation of the oncogene KRAS. All of these lesions lead to enhanced activity of both PI3K and mTOR. ...
