To assess the impact of all-oral direct-acting antiviral agent (DAA) regimens on the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in HIV/HCV-coinfected patients with cirrhosis. This was a multicentre prospective cohort study recruiting HIV/HCV-coinfected patients with a new diagnosis of compensated cirrhosis. Patients were followed up until HCC, death or the censoring date (March 2017). The primary endpoint was the emergence of HCC. The incidence rate (IR) (95% CI) of HCC in different groups was computed. ...

The increase of temperature can cause a decoupling of sugar and anthocyanin accumulation in grapes, leading to wines poor in color. Different enological techniques are nowadays under study to overcome this problem. Among them, the present study has evaluated the color and pigment composition modifications caused by the addition during Syrah winemaking of either Pedro Ximénez seeds (intended to increase chemical stability) or/and two different mannoproteins (color-protective and astringency-modulator) ...

One of the main consequences of the advancement of harvest date associated to global climate change is that the phenolic maturity of grapes can be delayed in relation to their technological maturity. As a consequence, wines made from these grapes can be poor in phenolic compounds or possess an unbalanced phenolic composition, affecting their global quality. The combined post-fermentative addition of seeds and an astringency-modulator mannoprotein (MP) might be a potential strategy to solve this problem, ...

Abstract Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) transplantation is emerging as an ideal tool to restore the wounded central nervous system (CNS). MSCs isolated from extra-embryonic tissues have some advantages compared to MSCs derived from adult ones, such as an improved proliferative capacity, life span, differentiation potential and immunomodulatory properties. In addition, they are more immunoprivileged, reducing the probability of being rejected by the recipient. Umbilical cords (UCs) are a good source of ...

Abstract: Delivery of inhaled medications via an inhaler device underpins the effectiveness of treatment for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Correct inhaler technique among patients is also a predictor of achieving treatment compliance and adherence. Reporting of patient satisfaction with inhalers is therefore gaining increasing attention and is now recognized as an important patient-reported outcome in clinical trials involving patients with COPD or asthma. In this cross- ...

Bifidobacterium longum subsp. infantis CECT 7210 is a probiotic strain able to inhibit rotavirus in vitro and protect against viral infection in both cell cultures and mice. Here, we report its complete genome sequence, as deciphered by PacBio single-molecule real-time (SMRT) technology. An analysis of the sequence may provide insights into its functional activity.

<b><i>Objectives:</i></b> Neutrophils play an important role in the control of pathogens through several mechanisms, including phagocytosis and the formation of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs). The latter consists of DNA as a backbone with embedded antimicrobial peptides, histones, and proteases, providing a matrix to entrap and in some cases to kill microbes. Some metabolic requirements for NET formation have recently been described. The virus-induced formation of NETs ...

The goal of this work was to develop new geometry design of inlet and outlet distributors of the FM01-LC in parallel plate configuration using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The new distributor geometry was experimentally evaluated with RTD experimental curves using the stimulus-response technique and approximated with axial dispersion model (ADM), plug dispersion exchange model (PDEM) and by solving the hydrodynamic (Reynolds average Navier–Stokes equation for low Reynolds number, RANS-LRN) and ...

The objective of this study was to define the anatomy of the cranioencephalic structures and associated formations in camel using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MR images were acquired in sagittal, transverse and oblique dorsal planes, using spin-echo techniques, a magnet of 1.5 T and a standard human body coil. MR images were compared with corresponding frozen cross-sections of the head. Different anatomic structures were identified and labelled at each level. The resulting images provided excellent ...

Transposon mutagenesis of Anabaena sp. PCC7120 led to the isolation of a mutant strain, PHB11, which grew poorly at pH values above 10. The mutant strain exhibited pronounced Na + sensitivity; this sensitivity was higher under basic conditions. Mutant PHB11 also showed an inhibition of photosynthesis that was much more pronounced at alkaline pH. Reconstruction of the transposon mutation of PHB11 in the wild-type strain reproduced the phenotype of the original mutant. The wild-type version of the mutated ...

ABSTRACT Transposon mutagenesis of Anabaena sp. strain PCC7120 led to the isolation of a mutant strain, SNa1, which is unable to fix nitrogen aerobically but is perfectly able to grow with combined nitrogen (i.e., nitrate). Reconstruction of the transposon mutation of SNa1 in the wild-type strain reproduced the phenotype of the original mutant. The transposon had inserted within an open reading frame whose translation product shows significant homology with a family of proteins known as high-molecular- ...

Computing boolean operations between general planar polygons is one of the fundamental problems in geometric and solid modeling. In this work we present a new algorithm to calculate intersection, union and difference, valid for general planar polygons (manifold and non-manifold, with and without holes), based on a formal representation system. This formal model is based on the concept of simplicial chain, developed by Feito and Rivero (Computers & Graphics 22(5) (1998)). Using algebraic operations between ...

Previous studies have demonstrated that the intake of a 1% conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) diet in an 80:20 mixture of cis-9,trans-11 and trans-10,cis-12 exerts age-specific effects on the immune system: immunoglobulin enhancement and proliferative down-modulation in neonatal and adult rats, respectively. The present study evaluates the influence of the same diet on antibody synthesis of early infant Wistar rats during suckling and/or after weaning. Dietary supplementation was performed during suckling ...

A liver stiffness below 21 kPa has a high negative predictive value to exclude the presence of esophageal varices at risk of bleeding in HIV/hepatitis C virus (HCV)-coinfected patients. Consequently, upper gastrointestinal endoscopy (UGE) for the screening of esophageal varices could be avoided in these patients. However, this strategy has not been widely accepted due to concerns about its safety. To assess the ability of liver stiffness to predict the risk of portal hypertensive gastrointestinal bleeding ( ...

Objective: To assess the possible association between the use of direct antiviral agents (DAA) and the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in HIV/hepatitis C virus (HCV)-coinfected patients. Methods: The GEHEP-002 cohort recruits HCC cases in HIV-infected patients from 32 centers from Spain. Three analyses were performed: the proportion of HCC cases after sustained virological response (SVR) and the evolution of this proportion over time, the frequency of HCC after SVR in HIV/HCV-coinfected patients ...

Abstract Several studies have reported the persistence of HCV RNA in liver and/or peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) in spite of undetectable viremia in patients who have achieved sustained virological response (SVR). This event, defined as occult HCV infection, remains controversial and low titers of persistent virus may be underestimated because it has not yet been analyzed by a highly sensitive test such as droplet digital PCR (ddPCR). This method provides an alternate ultra-sensitive detection ...
