We investigated the influence of the intertidal geothermal hot spring (GHS) on the biogeochemistry of trace elements in Santispac Bight, Bahía Concepción (Gulf of California). The geothermal fluids were enriched in As and Hg mainly in ionic form. The suspended particulate matter of the GHS had elevated enrichment factor (EF) >1 of As, Bi, Cd, Co, Cu, Mn, Mo, Sb, Sn, Sr, Ti, U and Zn. The sediment core from GHS1 had high concentration of As, Hg, C

The aim of this work is the preparation of an active nanovehicle for the effective administration of α‐tocopheryl succinate (α‐TOS). α‐TOS is loaded in the core of nanoparticles (NPs) based on amphiphilic pseudo‐block copolymers of N‐vinyl pyrrolidone and a methacrylic derivative of α‐TOS. These well‐defined spherical NPs have sizes below 165 nm and high encapsulation efficiencies. In vitro activity of NPs is tested in hypopharynx squamous carcinoma (FaDu) cells and nonmalignant epithelial cells, demonstrating ...

Abstract Endocannabinoids have recently emerged as instructive cues in the developing central nervous system, and, based on the expression of their receptors, we identified oligodendrocytes as potential targets of these molecules. Here, we show that the enzymes responsible for the synthesis of the endocannabinoid 2‐arachidonoylglycerol (2‐AG), diacylglycerol lipase alpha (DAGLα) and beta (DAGLβ), and degradation, monoacylglycerol lipase (MAGL), can be found in oligodendrocytes at different developmental ...

Climate change is commonly assumed to induce species’ range shifts toward the poles. Yet, other environmental changes may affect the geographical distribution of species in unexpected ways. Here, we quantify multidecadal shifts in the distribution of European forest plants and link these shifts to key drivers of forest biodiversity change: climate change, atmospheric deposition (nitrogen and sulfur), and forest canopy dynamics. Surprisingly, westward distribution shifts were 2.6 times more likely ...

Unfortunately, there are numerous contradictory factors related to mortality. Methods: We analyzed several cases of E. histolytica infection to determine the factors related to mortality. We included patients >15 years of age who were histopathologically diagnosed with amoebic toxic colitis and treated from January 2000 through December 2006. Some of the applications foreseen for this protocol lie in the context of mobile devices such a smartphones and tablets, which in a majority of instances are powered by an ARM processor supporting the NEON vector set of instructions. This work demonstrates the possibility of implementing clean, renewable technologies that allow profitable value to be drawn from the highly contaminant waste of a broiler industry. An anaerobic digestion (AD) process can significantly reduce the overall chemical oxygen demand (COD), and the digestate's COD is also reduced to within legal limits by the process of separating its liquid and solid phases. The resulting liquid phase complies with regulations regarding discharge into the sewerage network ...

Restoration is playing an increasingly important role in ecology as natural habitats become scarcer and chances to restore ecosystems damaged by human activities are more common. However, restoration of degraded Mediterranean arid ecosystems is hampered by drought and poor soils, which cause many establishment failures. Ecosystems in the western Mediterranean basin have undergone intense changes in land use throughout the centuries, resulting in areas with severe alterations. Today, most these areas have become sensitive to human activity, prone to profound changes in land-use configuration and ecosystem services. In recent decades there has been an increasing demand in environmental sciences for harmonized climatic data at large spatial scales and long periods. The benefits of masting (volatile, quasi-synchronous seed production at lagged intervals) include satiation of seed predators, but these benefits come with a cost to mutualist pollen and seed dispersers. If the evolution of masting represents a balance between these benefits and costs, we expect mast avoidance in species that are heavily reliant on mutualist dispersers. These effects play out in the context of variable climate and site fertility among species that vary widely in nutrient demand. ...

Lack of tree fecundity data across climatic gradients precludes the analysis of how seed supply contributes to global variation in forest regeneration and biotic interactions responsible for biodiversity. A global synthesis of raw seedproduction data shows a 250-fold increase in seed abundance from cold-dry to warm-wet climates, driven primarily by a 100-fold increase in seed production for a given tree size. The modest (threefold) increase in forest productivity across the same climate gradient ...

In this paper, the approximation of a fractional-order PIDcontroller is proposed to control a DC–DC converter. The synthesis and tuning process of the non-integer PID controller is described step by step. A biquadratic approximation is used to produce a flat phase response in a band-limited frequency spectrum. The proposed method takes into consideration both robustness and desired closed-loop characteristics, keeping the tuning process simple. The transfer function of the fractional-order PID controller ...

During the last decade, hateful and sexist content towards women is being increasingly spread on social networks. The exposure to sexist speech has serious consequences to women's life and limits their freedom of speech. Previous studies have focused on identifying hatred or violence towards women. Macroclimate warming is often assumed to occur within forests despite the potential for tree cover to modify microclimates. Here, using paired measurements, we compared the temperatures under the canopy versus in the open at 98 sites across 5 continents. We show that forests function as a thermal insulator, cooling the understory when ambient temperatures are hot and warming the understory when ambient temperatures are cold. The understory versus open temperature offset is magnified as temperatures ...

How individual species and entire ecosystems will respond to future climate change are among the most pressing questions facing ecologists. Past biodiversity dynamics recorded in the paleoecological archives show a broad array of responses, yet significant knowledge gaps remain. In particular, the relative roles of evolutionary adaptation, phenotypic plasticity, and dispersal in promoting survival during times of climate change have yet to be clarified. Investigating the paleo-archives offers great ...

Modeling niches at the species level disregards information about evolutionary processes above and below the level of species. Species-level models ignore the potential for locally adaptive responses and assume that current distributions reflect the entire set of suitable conditions. In many cases splitting taxa into subunits and modeling each separately or lumping related taxa can improve niche estimates. Partial pooling of lineages into a single multiresponse framework has underutilized potential ...

The history of Earth is a history of recurrent climate change. Today's global biodiversity demonstrates that many species have been able to cope with climate shifts in the past. Yet great concern exists that modern climate change is likely to overstrain the capacity of many species to track suitable climate spaces, potentially leading to widespread extinctions through the coming decades. This view is further promoted by a large number of species distribution modeling (SDM) forecasts. It remains, ...
