Thyroid disorders affect renal function, which involves changes in local renin angiotensin system (RAS). Angiotensin peptide levels in the tissue are regulated by the activity of several aminopeptidases (AP) known as angiotensinases. The nature and consequences of the thyroid-induced RAS changes are not completely understood. We investigated the relationship between thyroid status (hyper- and hypothyroidism) and several kidney AP actions involved in RAS control. We have determined fluorometrically ...

alpha(2)-Macroglobulin (alpha(2)M) is a broad-spectrum protease-binding protein abundant in plasma from vertebrates and several invertebrate phyla. This protein was purified from cell-free hemolymph of the white shrimp, Penaeus vannamei, using Blue-Sepharose and Phenyl-Sepharose chromatography. The shrimp alpha(2)M is a 380 kDa protein, a homodimer of two apparently identical subunits of approximately 180 kDa linked by disulphide bridges. The amino acid sequence of the N-terminus is similar to the ...

Robots have begun to populate the everyday environments of human beings. These social robots must perform their tasks without disturbing the people with whom they share their environment. This paper proposes a navigation algorithm for robots that is acceptable to people. Robots will detect the personal areas of humans, to carry out their tasks, generating navigation routes that have less impact on human activities. The main novelty of this work is that the robot will perceive the moods of people ...

BACKGROUND: Waveform analysis by visual inspection can be a reliable, noninvasive, and useful tool for detecting patient-ventilator asynchrony. However, it is a skill that requires a properly trained professional. METHODS: This observational study was conducted in 17 urban ICUs. Health-care professionals (HCPs) working in these ICUs were asked to recognize different types of asynchrony shown in 3 evaluation videos. The health-care professionals were categorized according to years of experience, prior training ...

In spite of the well-known contribution of angiotensin II (Ang II) in the pathogenesis of Goldblatt two-kidney one clip (G2K1C) hypertension, the importance of other Ang peptides, such as Ang III, Ang IV or Ang 2-10, is scarcely understood. The functional status of these peptides depends on the action of several aminopeptidases called angiotensinases. The metabolism of Ang III to Ang IV by aminopeptidase M (AlaAP) and of Ang I to Ang 2-10 by aspartyl aminopeptidase (AspAP) was evaluated in the renal ...

The17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) established by the United Nations Agenda 2030 constitute a global blueprint agenda and instrument for peace and prosperity worldwide. Artificial intelligence and other digital technologies that have emerged in the last years, are being currently applied in virtually every area of society, economy and the environment. Hence, it is unsurprising that their current role in the pursuance or hampering of the SDGs has become critical. This study aims at providing ...

Abstract Chile has become a popular destination for migrants from South America and the Caribbean (low- and middle-income countries migration). Close to 200.000 Haitian migrants have arrived in Chile. Infectious and non-infectious disease burden among the Haitian adult population living in Chile is unknown. This study aimed to acquire the basic health information (selected transmissible and non-transmissible conditions) of the Haitian adult population living in Chile. A cross-sectional survey was ...

We used mRNA differential display to assess yeast gene expression under cold or freeze shock stress conditions. We found both up- and down-regulation of genes, although repression was more common. We identified and sequenced several cold-induced genes exhibiting the largest differences. We confirmed, by Northern blotting, the specificity of the response for TPI1, which encodes triose-phosphate isomerase; ERG10, the gene for acetoacetyl coenzyme A thiolase; and IMH1, which encodes a protein implicated ...

Abstract Morphological characteristics and mechanical properties of PP‐EP/EVA blends were studied and compared to those of PP/EVA previously reported. For the PPEP/EVA blends, interfacial interactions in amorphous zones, which were associated with shifts in T g , were well defined compared to those of PP/EVA blends, although the nature of crystalline zones was similar for both systems. At EVA concentrations up to 20%, the elongation at break and impact strength slightly increased in both systems. ...

Time series of the exchanged flows through the Strait of Gibraltar at the eastern section have been estimated from current-meter observations taken between October 1995 and May 1998 within the Canary Islands Azores Gibraltar Observations (CANIGO) project. The inflow exhibits a clear annual signal that peaks in late summer simultaneously with a deepening of the interface. The cycle seems to be driven by the seasonal signal of the density contrast between the surface Atlantic water that forms the inflow ...

Voltage-sensing domains (VSDs) undergo conformational changes in response to the membrane potential and are the critical structural modules responsible for the activation of voltage-gated channels. Structural information about the key conformational states underlying voltage activation is currently incomplete.
