Abstract Background Transcriptional regulation of genes in eukaryotes is achieved by the interactions of multiple transcription factors with arrays of transcription factor binding sites (TFBSs) on DNA and with each other. Identification of these TFBSs is an essential step in our understanding of gene regulatory networks, but computational prediction of TFBSs with either consensus or commonly used stochastic models such as Position-Specific Scoring Matrices (PSSMs) results in an unacceptably high number ...

The posterior parietal cortex (PPC) is known to be involved in the control of automatic movements that are spatially guided, such as grasping an apple. We considered whether the PPC might also contribute to the performance of visuomotor associations in which stimuli and responses are linked arbitrarily, such as producing a certain sound for a typographical character when reading aloud or pressing pedals according to the color of a traffic light when driving a motor vehicle. The PPC does not appear ...

Abstract Objective To report the presence of intracerebral hemorrhage and porencephaly, both present at birth, in two preterm infants with a mutation in the collagen 4 A1 gene. Methods Two preterm infants with antenatal intracerebral hemorrhage and established porencephaly, as well as their affected mother and grandfather, underwent neurological and ophthalmological examination and magnetic resonance imaging of the brain. Mutation analysis of the COL4A1 gene was performed in the infants and in their ...

Large parts of the everwet tropics have been burned, leaving many unburned–burned forest edges. Here we studied a Bornean forest edge to determine: (1) how unburned and burned forest differ in vegetation structure, diversity, composition and plant functional traits 7 yr after fire, and (2) if these variables showed significant edge effects. Environmental and inventory data from 120 plots (0.01 ha each), covering both sides of a ∼1.3 km forest boundary were sampled. Differences in vegetation structure, ...

Receptor endocytosis is critical for cell signaling. IGF1R mediates an autocrine loop that is de-regulated in Ewing Sarcoma (ES) cells. Here we study the impact of IGF1R internalization, mediated by clathrin and caveolin-1 (CAV1), in ES signaling. We used clathrin and CAV1-siRNA to interfere in clathrin- and caveolin-dependent endocytosis. Chlorpromazine (CPMZ) and methyl-beta-cyclo-dextrin (MCD) were also used in order to inhibit clathrin- and caveolin-dependent endocytosis, respectively. We analyzed ...

We studied the urinary calcium excretion in 41 patients in the third trimester of pregnancy. There was a significant decrease in 24-hour calcium excretion in hypertensive and pre-eclamptic patients. The 24-hour calcium excretion correlated well with the calcium to creatinine ratio of a single voided urine sample. We conclude that measuring urinary calcium excretion may be valuable in the care and the study of pregnant patients with hypertensive disorders, and that the 24-hour urinary calcium excretion ...

Abstract Optimal integration of education and ongoing faculty research in many undergraduate science programs is limited to the capstone project. Here, we aimed to develop a novel course‐based undergraduate research experience (CURE) in synergy with ongoing faculty research. This 10‐week course called Biomedical Research Lab is embedded in the curriculum of the undergraduate program Biomedical Sciences and grounded in the theoretical framework of research‐based learning. Four groups of four students ...

Background and Purpose: Hypertensive vasculopathy and cerebral amyloid angiopathy are the two most common forms of cerebral small vessel disease. Both forms are associated with the development of primary intracerebral hemorrhage, but the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying spontaneous vessel rupture remain unknown. This work constitutes a systematic review on blood-brain barrier dysfunction in the etiology of spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage due to cerebral small vessel disease. Methods: ...

The authors provide definitions for the different forms of pediatric rhinosinusitis, with an enumeration of the main symptoms and signs. They also provide the indications for CT scan examination and microbiological investigations. In addition, they emphasize the importance of concomitant systemic disease, such as allergy and immunological disorders. The adequate medical management, which is mandatory before any surgery, is considered and discussed, and the indications for surgery are provided.

Diabetes is a risk factor for atherosclerotic disease but negatively associated with the development and progression of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) are increased in diabetes and renders the vascular matrix more resistant to proteolysis. We assessed the concentration of AGEs in AAA biopsies obtained from diabetic and nondiabetic patients and hypothesized that (nonenzymatic) glycation of AAA tissue protects against proteolytic breakdown of collagen.AAA biopsies ...

Patients with neuromuscular scoliosis (NMS) are frequently considered at high risk for postoperative complications based on their underlying disease and comorbidities. Postoperative complications include prolonged mechanical ventilation (MV), defined longer than 72 h, at the paediatric intensive care unit. The objectives of this retrospective study were to assess the incidence of prolonged MV in patients with NMS following scoliosis surgery and to identify predictive risk factors. This study uses electrocorticography in humans to assess how alpha- and beta-band rhythms modulate excitability of the sensorimotor cortex during psychophysically-controlled movement imagery. Both rhythms displayed effector-specific modulations, tracked spectral markers of action potentials in the local neuronal population, and showed spatially systematic phase relationships (traveling waves). Yet, alpha- and beta-band rhythms differed in their anatomical and functional properties, were weakly correlated, ...
