Biocompatibility improvements for blood contacting materials are of increasing interest for implanted devices and interventional tools. The current study focuses on inorganic (titanium, titanium nitride, titanium oxide) as well as diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating materials on polymer surfaces (thermoplastic polyurethane), deposited by magnetron sputtering und pulsed laser deposition at room temperature. DLC was used pure (a-C:H) as well as doped with silicon, titanium, and nitrogen + titanium (a-C:H:Si, ...

The complexity of providing medical care in a high-tech environment with a highly specialized, limited labour force makes hospitals more crisis-prone than other industries. An effective defence against crises is only possible if the organizational resilience and the capacity to handle crises become part of the hospitals' organizational culture. To become more resilient to crises, a raised awareness--especially in the area of human resource (HR)--is necessary. The aim of this paper is to contribute ...

In typical hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) approximately 25% of patients show central nervous system (CNS) involvement often leading to serious long-term disabilities. We used the C5-complement inhibitor Eculizumab as rescue therapy. From 2011 to 2014, 11 children (median age 22 months, range 11–175) with enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli-positive HUS requiring dialysis who had seizures (11/11) and/or were in a stupor or coma (10/11) were treated with Eculizumab. Two patients enrolled on the Safety ...

To determine whether the genospecies composition of Lyme disease spirochetes is spatially stratified, we collected questing Ixodes ricinus ticks in neighboring plots where rodents, birds, and lizards were present as reservoir host and compared the prevalence of various genospecies. The overall prevalence of spirochetes in questing ticks varied across the study site. Borrelia lusitaniae appeared to infect adult ticks in one plot at the same frequency as did Borrelia afzelii in the other plots. The ...

This paper considers pulse-shaping multicarrier (MC) systems that transmit over doubly dispersive fading channels. We provide exact and approximate expressions for the intersymbol and intercarrier interference occurring, in such systems. This analysis reveals that the time and frequency concentration of the transmit and receive pulses is of paramount importance for low interference. We prove the (nonobvious) existence of such jointly concentrated pulse pairs by adapting recent mathematical results ...

We optimized an RIA for measurement of arginine8-vasopressin (AVP) in plasma by use of 100-mg Isolute C18 columns for extraction, addition of a preincubation step, and use of maximal dilution of a commercially available antiserum. The detection limit was 0.06 ng/L when 0.5 mL of acidified plasma was extracted. The within- and between-run CVs (n = 16) at physiological concentrations were 5.8-10. 2% and 6.5-11.7%, respectively. Prolonged storage of blood at 25 degreesC, but not at 4 degreesC, led to a ...

Human liver epoxide hydrolases were characterized by several criteria and a cytosolic cis ‐stilbene oxide hydrolase (cEH cso ) was purified to apparent homogeneity. Styrene oxide and five phenylmethyloxiranes were tested as substrates for human liver epoxide hydrolases. With microsomes activity was highest with trans ‐2‐methylstyrene oxide, followed by styrene 7, 8‐oxide, cis ‐2‐With methylstyrene oxide, cis ‐1,2‐dimethylstyrene oxide, trans ‐1, 2‐dimethylstyrene oxide and 2, 2‐dimethylstyrene oxide. Industrial biotechnology encompasses a large area of multi-scale and multi-disciplinary research activities. With the recent megatrend of digitalization sweeping across all industries, there is an increased focus in the biotechnology industry on developing, integrating and applying digital models to improve all aspects of industrial biotechnology. Given the rapid development of this field, we systematically classify the state-of-art modelling concepts applied at different scales in industrial biotechnology ...

Souring induced by sulfate reducing microorganisms (SRM) represents a severe problem in the petroleum industry. In addition to conventional biocides and nitrate, alternative SRM inhibitors such as molybdate have been proposed recently for controlling microbial souring. We used oilfield-derived microbial consortia, rock and fluids to test molybdate as a specific SRM inhibitor for a microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR) application where souring might occur as a side effect. SRM cells were quantified ...

Background: Vedolizumab (VDZ) drug monitoring strategies in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients have not been systematically investigated so far. We evaluated the correlation between VDZ trough levels (VTL) and the treatment response in IBD.Methods: Fifty-one patients with active IBD on or starting a therapy with VDZ were enrolled in this prospective and observational single centre study. Disease activity indices, blood tests, and anthropometric parameters were assessed over a time period of ...

We assessed the impact of early infarct-related artery (IRA) recanalisation on the outcomes of patients in the recently conducted, large-scale, multicentre HORIZONS-AMI trial.Of the 3,602 patients enrolled in the HORIZONS-AMI trial, 3,093 patients (85.9%) were treated with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) to a single artery. We analysed one-year outcomes in these patients according to the presence or absence of early IRA patency, defined as Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction (TIMI) 2 or 3 ...

Despite the use of prophylactic antibiotics, peristomal infection is the most common complication of percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG). A new glycerin hydrogel (GHG) wound dressing has been proposed to possess more effective antimicrobial properties but has not been tested in a larger trial. The aim of the study was therefore to assess the superiority of GHG regarding the incidence of peristomal wound infections during a 30-day postprocedure follow-up.Sixty-eight patients with cancer undergoing ...

Because a delayed arterial healing response after drug-eluting stent implantation has raised concerns about safety in diabetic patients, long-term effects of treatment with sirolimus-eluting stent (SES), as compared with bare-metal stent (BMS), have to be established. The aim of the 5-year follow-up of the randomized, controlled, open-label multicenter SCORPIUS study was to assess long-term safety and efficacy of the CYPHER (Cordis, Johnson & Johnson, Bridgewater, NJ) SES in percutaneous coronary intervention ...

Summary Background Primary results of the HORIZONS-AMI trial have been previously reported. In this final report, we aimed to assess 3-year outcomes. Methods HORIZONS-AMI was a prospective, open-label, randomised trial undertaken at 123 institutions in 11 countries. Patients aged 18 years or older were eligible for enrolment if they had ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), presented within 12 h after onset of symptoms, and were undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention. By use ...

The introduction of immunosuppressants and biologic agents has led to active debate and research about optimal therapeutic strategies considering risk factors and predictors of clinical outcome in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Data about gender-specific treatment differences and risk factors is lacking for IBD. The aim of the present study was to evaluate gender-related differences in the treatment of a distinct IBD patient population treated in the Rhein-Main region, Germany.Data about past ...
