A. Fred O'Neil,

Abstract It is of course very difficult to accurately project important characteristics of the future state of any rapidly evolving field, and the field of authoring systems for computer‐assisted instruction (CAI) is no exception. However, strong trends in evolving CAI systems of today would seem to indicate some important characteristics of the software systems underlying tomorrow's automated instructional systems. Under the premise that form follows function, this paper will explore the functional ...

Patients with advanced head and neck cancer have significant reduction in their circulating lymphocyte mass which is reflected in decreased numbers of T cells, Fc receptor cells, and in derangements of T lymphocyte functions, i.e., decreased responsiveness to several dilutions of phytohemagglutinin and lack of development of delayed hypersensitivity to 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (70% of patients were DNCB (-)). A population of phagocytic cells capable of decreasing lymphocyte responsiveness to mitogens were ...

Single-stranded (ss) transposition, a recently identified mechanism adopted by members of the widespread IS200/IS605 family of insertion sequences (IS), is catalysed by the transposase, TnpA. The transposase of IS608, recognizes subterminal imperfect palindromes (IP) at both IS ends and cleaves at sites located at some distance. The cleavage sites, C, are not recognized directly by the protein but by short sequences 5′ to the foot of each IP, guide (G) sequences, using a network of canonical ('Watson– ...

Significance Levels of CC chemokine receptor 5 (CCR5) on T cells are a critical factor influencing HIV/AIDS susceptibility. DNA methylation is an epigenetic feature associated with lower gene expression. Here we show that the DNA methylation status of CCR5 cis -regulatory regions ( cis -regions) correlates inversely with CCR5 levels on T cells. T-cell activation induces demethylation of CCR5 cis -regions, upregulating CCR5 expression. Higher vs. lower sensitivity of CCR5 cis -regions to undergoing T-cell ...

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES In the Strategies to Reduce Injuries and Develop Confidence in Elders (STRIDE) study, a multifactorial intervention was associated with a nonsignificant 8% reduction in time to first serious fall injury but a significant 10% reduction in time to first self‐reported fall injury relative to enhanced usual care. The effect of the intervention on other outcomes important to patients has not yet been reported. We aimed to evaluate the effect of the intervention on patient well‐being ...

Glen R. Nemerow, Fred C. Jensen, Neil R. Cooper,

These studies were carried out to investigate the mechanism of neutralization of purified Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) by fresh human serum from normal individuals lacking antibody to the EBV viral capsid (VCA) and nuclear antigens (EBNA). Such individuals thus lack serological evidence of immunity to EBV. Although an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) with highly purified immobilized EBV detected low levels of IgG antibody reactive with EBV in these normal nonimmune sera, this antibody failed to ...

F. Javier Moreno, John A. Jenkins, Fred A. Mellon, Neil M. Rigby, James A. Robertson, Nikolaus Wellner, E. N. Clare Mills,

Proteomic approaches have been used to characterise the main 2S albumin isoforms from Brazil nuts (Bertholletia excelsa). Whilst most isoforms (∼10 discrete protein species) exhibited molecular masses of around 12 kDa with a high amino acid sequence homology, important charge heterogeneity was found, with pIs varying between 4.6 and 6.6, with one ≥7.0. Proteomic analysis showed that these corresponded to a total of six National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) accessions and that three isoforms ...
