BackgroundOne of the most important factors responsible for the calcific failure of bioprosthetic heart valves is glutaraldehyde crosslinking. Ethanol (EtOH) incubation after glutaraldehyde crosslinking has previously been reported to confer anticalcification efficacy for bioprostheses. The present studies investigated the anticalcification efficacy in vivo of the novel crosslinking agent, triglycidyl amine (TGA), with or without EtOH incubation, in comparison with glutaraldehyde.MethodsThe TGA crosslinking (± ...

The siphonous green algae are an assemblage of seaweeds that consist of a single giant cell. They comprise two sister orders, the Bryopsidales and Dasycladales. We infer the phylogenetic relationships among the siphonous green algae based on a five-locus data matrix and analyze temporal aspects of their diversification using relaxed molecular clock methods calibrated with the fossil record. The multi-locus approach resolves much of the previous phylogenetic uncertainty, but the radiation of families ...

Palmophyllum, Verdigellas and Palmoclathrus are marine palmelloid green algae with morphologies ranging from closely adherent crusts, peltate discs, to upright branched thalli. Thalli of these taxa are comprised of small spherical cells embedded within a dense mucilaginous matrix. Taxonomic affinities of these palmelloid genera, however, has remained uncertain. Previous studies of Palmophyllum and Verdigellas classified these algae within the Palmellaceae, but the complete absence of data regarding ...

We provide molecular phylogenetic evidence that the obscure genera Palmophyllum Kütz. and Verdigellas D. L. Ballant. et J. N. Norris form a distinct and early diverging lineage of green algae. These palmelloid seaweeds generally persist in deep waters, where grazing pressure and competition for space are reduced. Their distinctness warrants recognition as a new order, the Palmophyllales. Although phylogenetic analyses of both the 18S rRNA gene and two chloroplast genes ( atp B and rbc L) are in agreement ...

Abstract Purpose Integrin α v β 6 belongs to the RGD subset of the integrin family, and its expression levels are a prognostic and theranostic factor in some types of cancer and pulmonary fibrosis. This paper describes the GMP radiolabelling of the synthetic 20 amino acid peptide A20FMDV2 (NAVPNLRGDLQVLAQKVART), derived from the foot-and-mouth disease virus, and characterises the use of [ 18 F]FB-A20FMDV2 as a high affinity, specific and selective PET radioligand for the quantitation and visualisation ...

Abstract Rising ozone (O 3 ) concentrations, coupled with an increase in drought frequency due to climate change, pose a threat to plant growth and productivity which could negatively affect carbon sequestration capacity of Northern Hemisphere (NH) forests. Using long‐term observations of O 3 mixing ratios and soil water content (SWC), we implemented empirical drought and O 3 stress parameterizations in a coupled stomatal conductance–photosynthesis model to assess their impacts on plant gas exchange ...

Abstract The role of stomata in regulating photosynthesis and transpiration, and hence governing global biogeochemical cycles and climate, is well‐known. Less well‐understood, however, is the importance of stomatal control to the exchange of other trace gases between terrestrial vegetation and the atmosphere. Yet these gases determine atmospheric composition, and hence air quality and climate, on scales ranging from local to global, and seconds to decades. Vegetation is a major sink for ground‐level ...

Abstract Isoprene concentrations were measured at four heights below, within, and above the forest canopy in Wytham Woods (United Kingdom) throughout the summer of 2018 using custom‐built gas chromatographs (the iDirac). These observations were complemented with selected ancillary variables, including air temperature, photosynthetically active radiation, occasional leaf gas exchange measurements, and satellite retrievals of normalized difference vegetation and water indices. Tropospheric ozone is a dangerous atmospheric pollutant for forest ecosystems when it penetrates stomata. Thresholds for ozone-risk assessment are based on accumulated stomatal ozone fluxes such as the Phytotoxic Ozone Dose (POD). In order to identify the effect of ozone on a Holm oak forest in central Italy, four flux-based ozone impact response functions were implemented and tested in a multi-layer canopy model AIRTREE and evaluated against Gross Primary Productivity (GPP) obtained from observations ...
