The taxonomy of the genus Colletotrichum has undergone various changes. These alterations arise from the use of modern molecular tools. Currently, Colletotrichum species are grouped into complexes. Species of Colletotrichum associated with diseases in lima bean have been investigated very little. In Brazil, anthracnose in lima bean has often been associated with Colletotrichum truncatum, but only morphological characteristics have been used for identification purposes. In this study, samples of ...

Boar semen cannot be immediately cryopreserved, it need be hold at 17 °C prior to cryopreservation, holding time has been used to improve cryopreserved boar semen, since holding time allows a prolonged interaction between spermatozoa and seminal plasma components. However, until now only few periods of holding time have been studied, and boar semen had been held at 17 °C for 24 h to facilitate its manufacture. Thus, this experiment aims to study the effect several holding time (0, 4, 8, 12, 24, 28 ...

This study aimed to identify yeasts from the gastrointestinal tract of scarlet ibises (Eudocimus ruber) and from plant material collected from the environment where they live. Then, the isolates phenotypically identified as Candida famata were submitted to molecular identification of their closely related species and evaluated for their antifungal susceptibility and possible resistance mechanisms to antifungal drugs. Cloacal swabs from 20 scarlet ibises kept in captivity at Mangal das Garças Park ( ...

Abstract Purpose To report the outcomes of a series of children younger than 2 years with ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO) who underwent laparoscopic pyeloplasty (LP), compared to children older than 2 years. Patients and methods Twenty-three children (18 male) with UPJO underwent 24 Anderson–Hynes transperitoneal LPs between March 2003 and July 2007. The diagnosis of UPJO was confirmed on renal sonography and diuretic renogram. Nine children were younger than 2 years (Group 1) and 14 were older (Group ...

Miscibility is an important issue in biopolymer blends for analysis of the behavior of polymer pairs through the detection of phase separation and improvement of the mechanical and physical properties of the blend. This study presents the formulation of a stable and one-phase mixture of collagen and regenerated silk fibroin (RSF), with the highest miscibility ratio between these two macromolecules, through inducing electrostatic interactions, using salt ions. For this aim, a ternary phase diagram ...

The substitution effects of Fe ion on the structure of the intermetallic Bi3Ni1-xFex (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.10) superconductor were studied. The morphology of samples consists of an inhomogeneous laminar slab-like microstructure. The main phase corresponds to Bi3Ni1-xFex with an orthorhombic structure (Pnma), but with very small quantities of impurities of BiNi and Bi as revealed by X-ray diffraction. SEM and AFM reveal that the Bi3Ni1-xFex phase consists of two regions. One region is Bi richer and Ni and Fe poorer ...

These are the genomes of Agrobacterium tumefaciens, Mesorhizobium loti, Sinorhizobium meliloti, Xanthomonas campestris pv campestris, Xanthomonas axonopodis pv citri, Xylella fastidiosa, and Ralstonia solanacearum. Genome structure and the metabolism pathways available highlight the compromise between the genome size and lifestyle. Despite the recognized importance of the type III secretion ...

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are a class of broad-spectrum antibiotics known by their ability to disrupt bacterial membranes and their low tendency to induce bacterial resistance, arising as excellent candidates to fight bacterial infections. In this study we aimed at designing short 12-mer AMPs, derived from a highly effective and broad spectrum synthetic AMP, MSI-78 (22 residues), by truncating this peptide at the N- and/or C-termini while spanning its entire sequence with 1 amino acid (aa) shifts. ...

Antimicrobial peptides are widely recognized as an excellent alternative to conventional antibiotics. MSI-78, a highly effective and broad spectrum AMP, is one of the most promising AMPs for clinical application. In this study, we have designed shorter derivatives of MSI-78 with the aim of improving selectivity while maintaining antimicrobial activity. Shorter 17-mer derivatives were created by truncating MSI-78 at the N- and/or C-termini, while spanning MSI-78 sequence. Despite the truncations ...

Bovines present contrasting, heritable phenotypes of infestations with the cattle tick, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus. Tick salivary glands produce IgG-binding proteins (IGBPs) as a mechanism for escaping from host antibodies that these ectoparasites ingest during blood meals. Allotypes that occur in the constant region of IgG may differ in their capacity to bind with tick IGBPs; this may be reflected by the distribution of distinct allotypes according to phenotypes of tick infestations. The plastic instability in the stress-strain curve and work hardening of a type AISI 316 austenitic stainless steel was investigated in the high temperature range of 150°C to 800°C for two strain rates. The results indicate the occurrence of plastic instability and serrations between 200°C and 650°C with peaks in both the tensile strength and work hardening rate. These plastic instability/serrations are associated with dynamic strain aging behavior. As a consequence, within the temperature interval ...
