The paper treats a new approach of dynamic analysis of a conductor cable of an overhead transmission line under the theoretical background of spectral element method (SEM). The methodology relies on the analytical solution of the displacement wave equation in the frequency domain; moreover, it both enhances the accuracy of model predictions and reduces the computational efforts when compared to a finite element (FE) model. Two numerical models based on SEM are built for transmission lines taking into ...

A hybrid numerical-analytical solution is proposed to analyze MHD (magnetohydrodynamic) natural convection of an electrically-conducting fluid within a square cavity, differentially heated at the sidewalls and subjected to an inclined external magnetic field. The first goal is to expand the spectrum of application of the so called Generalized Integral Transform Technique (GITT), dealing with a multiphysics formulation, while further demonstrating the relative merits of the proposed eigenfunction expansion ...

The main purpose of the current work is to employ an integral transform approach based on eigenfunction expansion and on an implicit filter scheme in order to solve the governing equations for the transverse vibrations of a cantilever beam clamped at one end and with an eccentric tip mass in the axial direction at the other end. Numerical results are obtained for both the undamped and damped natural frequencies of the system, as well as for its transverse displacement due to arbitrarily time-varying ...

The classical integral transform technique (CITT) is employed to derive an exact analytical solution for the transverse vibrations of a damaged Euler–Bernoulli beam simply supported at both ends. The exact analytical solution derived with the CITT approach requires knowledge of the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of a related eigenvalue problem, whose hybrid solution is further obtained with the generalized integral transform technique (GITT). Expressions derived for the natural frequencies, mode shapes ...

In this paper, we investigate the recovery process of resistive superconducting fault current limiters (R-SCFCLs) after fault clearance. The R-SCFCL module consists of an MCP-BSCCO-2212 bulk coil. A short-circuit test showed that an assembly containing 12 R-SCFCL modules is able to limit a prospective fault current of about 99 to just 11 kA peak within the first half-cycle of current (under Vo = 1 kV rms ). The current limiting behavior and the recovery process were analyzed by mean of simulations considering ...

Abstract The aim of the present paper is to describe the application of the generalized integral transform technique (GITT) for the theoretical analysis of wind‐induced vibrations on overhead conductors. In the mathematical model adopted, the complicated helicoidal geometry of the conductor is simplified by treating it as a homogeneous taut string simple supported at both ends. Solving the governing partial differential equation through the GITT approach, one derives purely analytical or analytical– ...

This article presents a numerical scheme, based on an isoparametric second-order finite-element discretization of the unit cell heat conduction problem, to calculate the effective thermal conductivity of composite materials with general 3-D microstructures and interfacial thermal resistance. Representative numerical results for the effective conductivity of ordered arrays of spheres, prolate ellipsoids of revolution, and finite-length circular cylinders are presented and, when possible, validated ...

The present work is aimed at building a computational model for a typical stranded cable based on the basic principles of Verification and Validation. The model calibration and model tracking are guided based on a pool of validation metrics suitable for data which are commonly used in structural dynamics. The estimator used for the associated inverse problem is the Maximum a Posteriori estimator and the parameter estimation process is performed sequentially over experiments. Experimental tests have ...

The present work addresses the inverse problem of damage identification within the Bayesian framework. The inverse problem is formulated as a parameter estimation one and it is built on the response of the continuous model of the structure provided by the Generalized Integral Transform technique. The Hamiltonian Monte Carlo (HMC) method is considered for sampling the posterior probability density function of the cohesion parameters, which are the ones considered for the description of the damage ...

Despite the importance of short-fiber composites in current engineering applications, few numerical studies have focused on their macroscopic heat conduction behavior. In this paper, we apply a finite-element-based methodology to calculate representative results for the effective thermal conductivities of composites reinforced with anisotropic short fibers. The investigated three-dimensional microstructures are ordered and consist of circular cylinders placed at the center of parallelepipedonal ...

The current work is concerned with eigenfunction expansion of the transient response of general one-dimensional non-self-adjoint distributed dynamic systems. The main goal of the current work is to propose an alternative eigenfunction expansion approach for transient analysis of general one-dimensional non-self-adjoint systems which avoids complex-valued eigenvalue problems. With the implicit filter scheme proposed here one splits the solution into two additive components, namely, a filtered solution ...

A non-adiabatic model for SCFCL has been developed. The model is based on the superconductor EJ curve. Heat transfer is modeled by means of a thermal electrical analogy, making the simulations easier to be implemented, because the coupling between electrical and the heat transfer differential equations becomes a straightforward task. Simulation results agree well with experimental testing.

Understanding the origin and dynamics of hadron structure and in turn that of atomic nuclei is a central goal of nuclear physics. This challenge entails the questions of how does the roughly 1GeV mass-scale that characterizes atomic nuclei appear; why does it have the observed value; and, enigmatically, why are the composite Nambu-Goldstone (NG) bosons in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) abnormally light in comparison? In this perspective, we provide an analysis of the mass budget of the pion and proton ...

How the bulk of the Universe's visible mass emerges and how it is manifest in the existence and properties of hadrons are profound questions that probe into the heart of strongly interacting matter. Paradoxically, the lightest pseudoscalar mesons appear to be the key to the further understanding of the emergent mass and structure mechanisms. These mesons, namely the pion and kaon, are the Nambu-Goldstone boson modes of QCD. Unravelling their partonic structure and the interplay between emergent ...
