Salivary gland carcinomas (SGCs) are uncommon tumors, constituting approximately 5% of all cancers of the head and neck. They are a heterogeneous group of diseases that pose significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. The treatment of patients with SGCs is mainly restricted to surgery and/or radiation therapy and there is only limited data available on the role of conventional systemic and targeted therapies in the management of patients with advanced disease. There is thus a great need to ...

Individuals' aversion to risk and inequality, and their concern for relative standing, are measured through experimental choices between hypothetical societies. It is found that, on average, individuals are both fairly inequality-averse and have a strong concern for relative income. The results are used to illustrate welfare consequences based on a utilitarian SWF and a modified CRRA utility function. It is shown that the social marginal utility of income may then become negative, even at income ...

Abstract A method for detecting static friction (stiction) in control valves is proposed. The method is model‐based and is inspired by ideas from the fields of change detection and multi‐model mode estimation. Opposed to existing methods only limited process knowledge is needed and it is not required that the loop has oscillating behaviour. The advantage of the method is illustrated in both numerical simulations and evaluations on real loop data. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The determination of the right resolution parameter when estimating frequency functions of linear systems is a trade-off between bias and variance. Traditional non-parametric approaches, like "window-closing" employ a global resolution parameter — the window width — that is tuned by ad hoc methods, usually visual inspection of the results. This paper suggests a method that tunes such parameters by an automatic procedure. A further benefit is that the tuning can be performed locally, i.e., that different ...

The human PDGFA gene has been mapped previously to two different sites on chromosome 7 (7p21→p22 and 7q11.2→q21.1). Using in situ hybridization and human × mouse somatic cell hybrid lines we present data which confirm the localization of PDGFA to the terminal short arm of chromosome 7, at 7p22.

The aim of this study was to investigate if a genetic risk score including 33 common genetic variants improves prediction of prostate cancer when added to measures of prostate-specific antigen (PSA). We conducted a case-control study nested within the Northern Sweden Health and Disease Cohort (NSHDC), a prospective cohort in northern Sweden. A total of 520 cases and 988 controls matched for age, and date of blood draw were identified by linkage between the regional cancer register and the NSHDC. Receiver ...

Increased expression of tumour-associated trypsin inhibitor (TATI) in tumour tissue and/or serum has been associated with poor survival in various cancer forms. Moreover, a proinvasive function of TATI has been shown in colon cancer cell lines. In this study, we have examined the prognostic significance of tumour-specific TATI expression in colorectal cancer, assessed by immunohistochemistry (IHC) on tissue microarrays (TMAs) with tumour specimens from two independent patient cohorts. The concept of Just-in-Time models has been introduced for models that are not estimated until they are really needed. The prediction is taken as a weighted average of neighboring points in the regressor space, such that an optimal bias/variance trade-off is achieved. The asymptotic properties of the method are investigated, and are compared to the corresponding properties of related statistical non-parametric kernel methods. It is shown that the rate of convergence for Just-in-Time models at least ...

Primary T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma (T-LBL) in the eye region is very rare. The present study described a unique case of T-LBL involving the extraocular muscles. A 22‑year‑old male patient presented with a 3‑week history of headache, reduced visual acuity and edema of the left eye. Clinical examination revealed left‑sided exophthalmus, periorbital edema, chemosis, and reduced motility of the left eye. A magnetic resonance imaging scan revealed thickening of the left orbital muscles and a positron ...

To validate an estimated model and evaluate its reliability is an important part of the system identification process. Recent work on model validation has shown that the use of explicit model error models provide a better way of visualizing the possible deficiencies of the nominal model. Previous contributions have mainly focused on parametric black-box models for estimating the error model. However, this requires that a correct model order for the error model has to be selected. Here we suggest ...

Malignant salivary gland tumors make up a small proportion of malignancies worldwide, yet vary widely in terms of histology, patterns of spread, and recurrence. A better understanding of this variability will guide appropriate treatment recommendations and lead to improved outcomes. Recent molecular genetic studies have uncovered a translocation-generated gene fusion network in salivary gland carcinomas that can be used for diagnosis, treatment decisions, and development of specific targeted therapies. ...

Abstract Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the head and neck is a malignant tumor with poor long‐term prognosis. Besides the recently identified MYB–NFIB fusion oncogene generated by a t(6;9) translocation, little is known about other genetic alterations in ACC. Using high‐resolution, array‐based comparative genomic hybridization, and massively paired‐end sequencing, we explored genomic alterations in 40 frozen ACCs. Eighty‐six percent of the tumors expressed MYB–NFIB fusion transcripts and 97% overexpressed ...

The transcription factor gene MYB was identified recently as an oncogene that is rearranged/duplicated in some human leukemias. Here we describe a new mechanism of activation of MYB in human cancer involving gene fusion. We show that the t(6;9)(q22-23;p23-24) translocation in adenoid cystic carcinomas (ACC) of the breast and head and neck consistently results in fusions encoding chimeric transcripts predominantly consisting of MYB exon 14 linked to the last coding exon(s) of NFIB. Hereditary medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) is caused by germline mutations in the RET proto-oncogene, resulting in constitutive activation of the RET tyrosine kinase. A substantial proportion of sporadic MTCs also have RET mutations, making the RET tyrosine kinase a potential therapeutic target in MTC. We have established a transplantable MTC in nude mice from a sporadic human MTC carrying a RET C634R mutation. Transplanted tumors had an exponential growth rate with an approximate doubling time ...

Abstract Fusion of the CREB regulated transcription coactivator CRTC1 (a.k.a. MECT1, TORC1, or WAMTP1) to the Notch coactivator MAML2 is a characteristic feature of low‐grade mucoepidermoid carcinomas of salivary and bronchial glands. The CRTC1–MAML2 fusion protein acts by inducing transcription of cAMP/CREB target genes, and this activity is crucial for the transforming properties of the protein. Here we show that the CRTC1 – MAML2 gene fusion is also frequent in benign hidradenomas of the skin. FISH ...

Recent studies have shown that the t(11;19)(q21;p13) translocation in mucoepidermoid carcinomas and benign Warthin's tumors results in a fusion of the N-terminal CREB-binding domain of the cAMP coactivator TORC1 (a.k.a. MECT1 and WAMTP1) to the Notch coactivator MAML2. Here we show that a third tumor type, clear cell hidradenoma of the skin, also expresses this gene fusion. RT-PCR analysis of a clear cell hidradenoma with a t(11;19)(q21;p13) translocation revealed expression of a TORC1-MAML2 fusion ...

We report the isolation and characterization of the human gene encoding islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP). Previously characterized cDNA sequences correspond to three exons of which the first is noncoding. A functional promoter region was identified in the 5' flanking DNA; however, this was farther upstream than expected. Northern blot analysis of human insulinoma RNA revealed three IAPP mRNAs of sizes 1.2, 1.8 and 2.1 kb, in agreement with three polyadenylation signals present in the 3' end of the ...

Public goods provision is essential for economic development. Yet there is limited evidence regarding contributions to local public goods in developing countries. This article analyses a field experiment where all 200 households in a village in rural Vietnam make real contributions to a public good that is very important for them in daily life—a bridge. We study the role of social influence (that people may be more willing to co-operate if others do) and the effects of the default alternative in ...

Two of the observed events are actual voluntary contributions (one in terms of money and one in terms of labor), one is from a natural field experiment, and one is from an artefactual field experiment. ...

Moreover, it addresses potential crowding-out effects, context-dependent and incoherent ...

The conventional rational voter model has problems explaining why people vote, since the costs typically exceed the expected benefits. This paper presents Swedish survey evidence regarding i) Why people vote, ii) Why people vote as they do and their beliefs about why others vote as they do, and iii) How bad not voting and voting selfishly are perceived to be. Large majorities find it important to vote in order to affect the outcome, because it is a democratic obligation to vote, and because they ...

Although conventional economic theory proposes that only the absolute levels of income and consumption matter for people's utility, there is much evidence that relative concerns are often important. This paper uses a choice experiment to measure people's perceptions of the degree to which such concerns matter, i.e. the degree of positionality. Based on a random sample in Sweden, income and cars are found to be highly positional, on average, in contrast to leisure and car safety. Leisure may even ...
