Purpose Being biodegradable, magnesium is considered a promising future implant material but very little is known about the biocompatibility for the tissues in direct contact with it. In this study, the degradation of pure magnesium implants in the skin of an isolated bovine udder was examined over a period of five hours. Methods Microdialysis technique was used in order to investigate the reactions at the interface of implant and tissue. Pure titanium implants served as control. Degradation behavior ...

Summary: Incontinentia pigmenti is a rare neurocutaneous disorder that may present with neurologic symptoms, in addition to a characteristic vesicular rash within the first days of life. We describe a neonate girl presenting with a rash and an encephalopathy who was first thought to suffer from a viral infection and was only later recognized as being affected by incontinentia pigmenti. Cerebral MR imaging showed extensive cortical necrosis in the acute period. Incontinentia pigmenti should be included ...

Polycrystalline ZnO is a material often used in heterogeneous catalysis. Its properties can be altered by the addition of dopants. We used gaseous fluorine (F2(g)) as direct way to incorporate fluoride in ZnO as anionic dopants. Here, the consequences of this treatment on the structural and electronic properties, as well as on the acidic/basic sites of the surface, are investigated. It is shown that the amount of F incorporation into the structure can be controlled by the synthesis parameters (t, ...

We report on the activation of CO2 on Ni single-atom catalysts. These catalysts were synthesized using a solid solution approach by controlled substitution of 1-10 atom % of Mg2+ by Ni2+ inside the MgO structure. The Ni atoms are preferentially located on the surface of the MgO and, as predicted by hybrid-functional calculations, favor low-coordinated sites. The isolated Ni atoms are active for CO2 conversion through the reverse water-gas shift (rWGS) but are unable to conduct its further hydrogenation ...

The industrial low-temperature process has been applied for 50 years; however, in situ data under relevant conditions are rare. We report on the in situ quantification of the surface adsorbates present under industrially relevant conditions by high-pressure thermogravimetry. In addition, high-pressure IR spectroscopy is applied for the identification of carbon-based adsorbates. On a high-performance Cu/ZnO:Al catalyst it has been shown that during CO2 hydrogenation adsorbates of up to 1.9 wt % of ...

The insertion of a nonactivated alkene into the MSi bond of a catalytically active transition‐metal complex has been demonstrated for the first time. Furthermore, the formation of CH 4 instead of SiMe 4 in the reaction of [(CO) 4 CoMe] with Me 3 SiH is clearly inconsistent with the traditional Chalk–Harrod mechanism for the transition‐metal‐catalyzed hydrosilation of olefins. Both reactions are key steps in a new proposal for the mechanism of this reaction.

Poly(styrene–co–acrylonitrile) (SAN), poly[styrene–co–(methyl methacrylate)] (SMMA), poly[styrene–co–(acrylic acid)] (SAA) and poly[styrene–co–(maleic anhydride)] (SMA) are only miscible with PPE when the amount of comonomer is rather small. From calculated binary interaction densities it can be concluded that the strong repulsion between PPE and comonomer limits miscibility. In blends ...
