With the larger domestic animals, the body temperature is made use of in the clinical diagnosis of two of the most dreaded infectious diseases,—namely, tuberculosis and glanders; in addition the rise in the body temperature is one of the characteristic symptoms in a dozen or more diseases of this nature. In some of the infectious diseases of chickens, like fowl typhoid, fowl cholera, diphtheria, fowl plague and in spirochaetosis in fowls, there is associated with the symptoms an increase in temperature. ...

We have compared surface charge and the surface charge density on the polyanions heparin and potassium polyvinyl sulfate (KPVS), as well as on hydrolyzed heparin and KPVS, with their accelerating effect on the inhibitory action of antithrombin III on thrombin. Polyelectrolyte titration of thrombin with KPVS or heparin at pH 7.4 clearly indicates an electrostatic interaction. In contrast, at the same pH no electrostatic interaction is observed between polyanions and antithrombin III. KPVS accelerates ...

UV photolysis of diazo(disilanyl)methyl ketones 2 in benzene generates acyl(disilanyl)carbenes 3 , which rearrange to 3‐OxO‐1‐sila‐1‐propenes 4 . The latter compounds are reactive intermediates which either cyclize to l‐oxa‐2‐sila‐3‐cyclobutenes 5 or form the eight‐membered cyclodimers 6 , depending on the substituent of the acyl function. In a side reaction, isomerization of 4 to disilylketenes 7 takes place in some cases. On the other hand, photolysis of diazo ketone 13 yields both the l‐oxa‐2‐sila‐ ...

1,2-Bis(1-diazo-2-oxoalkyl)-1,1,2,2-tetramethyl-disilanes are obtained from (diazomethyl)ketones and 1,1,2,2-tetramethyl-disilanediyl-1,2-bis(trifluoromethanesulfonate). Decomposition of these novel bis(diazo) compounds by UV light or transition metal catalysts leads to 4,8-disubstituted 3,7-dioxa-2,6-disilabicyclo[3.3.0]-octa-4,8-dienes in modest yield. Possible mechanisms for the formation of these rearranged, carbene-derived products are discussed. Die Titelverbindungen lassen sich aus Diazomethly- ...

A new type of bis(diazo) compound, a stable, electron-rich [4] radialene, and an unusual pentacyclic polyketal are the fruits of this investigation. Catalytic decomposition of silane 1 produces the tricyclic compound 2, whose four-membered ring is folded at an angle of 35.0°. Acid hydrolysis of 2 gives the tetra(oxahomo)cubane 3.

The role of the proinflammatory interleukin (IL)-18 in cancer progression remains controversial; we thus examined the hypothesis that impaired antitumor immune response in pancreatic carcinoma patients is related to elevated levels of its natural inhibitor IL-18 binding protein (BP) and/or to alteration in the IL-18 receptor complex expression and function. IL-18 and IL-18 binding protein isoform a (BPa) was assessed in pancreatic carcinoma patients at various disease stages, and after surgery/chemotherapy; ...

siRNAs that specifically silence the expression of cancer-related genes offer a therapeutic approach in oncology. However, it remains critical to determine the true mechanism of their therapeutic effects. Here, we describe the preclinical development of chemically modified siRNA targeting the essential cell-cycle proteins polo-like kinase 1 (PLK1) and kinesin spindle protein (KSP) in mice. siRNA formulated in stable nucleic acid lipid particles (SNALP) displayed potent antitumor efficacy in both hepatic ...

Equimolar amounts of diazoacetates and dialkylsilyl-bis(trifluoromethanesulfonates) (alkyl methyl, i-propyl, t-butyl) in the presence of a tertiary amine yield [(trifluoromethylsulfonyloxy)-dialkylsilyl]diazoacetates, whereas a 2/1 molar ratio of the reactants leads to dialkylsilyl-bis(diazoacetates). In the former products, nucleophilic substitution of the trifloxy group by an alcohol readily yields [alkyloxy- (or alkenyloxy-, alkinyloxy-) dialkylsilyl]diazoacetates. With enolizable ketones, O-silylation ...

Strongyloides stercoralis ordinarily matures in the human proximal small intestine and embeds in the small intestine mucosal wall where eggs are produced. Although Strongyloides may infect many sites in hyperinfection syndromes, reports of gastric involvement are rare. We report a patient taking prednisone and an H2 blocker who developed hyperinfection syndrome, with mucosal Strongyloides larvae seen in a gastric biopsy.
