Starting from TMOS and implementing co-gelation in the sol-gel method, silica was hybridized with an industrial formulation of bovine casein. The hybrid alcogels were dried in supercritical CO2 to yield crack-free silica-casein aerogel monoliths of casein contents ranging from 4.7 wt% to 28 wt%. Cross-linked hybrid aerogels were produced from formaldehyde treated alcogels. The microstructures and the morphologies of the silica-casein aerogels highly resemble to that of pristine silica aerogels. ...

Silica-gelatin hybrid aerogels, introduced recently as drug delivery devices, were investigated for biocompatibility with SCC tumor cells by a time-lapse video-microscopy technique. The particles proved to be not only non-toxic in nature, but the cells migrated towards them. Fluorescently labeled hybrid aerogels were synthesized by covalently binding fluorescein isothiocyanate either to the amino groups of gelatin molecules, or to the amine-functionalized silica backbone prior to sol-gel polycondensation ...

Podocytes are highly specialized, arborized epithelial cells covering the outer surface of the glomerular tuft in the kidney. Terminally differentiated podocytes are unable to go through cell division and hereby they are lacking a key property for regeneration after a toxic injury. Podocytes are long-lived cells but, to date, little is known about the mechanisms that support their stress resistance. Our aim was to investigate whether the well-known morphological changes during podocyte differentiation ...

Abstract Catalytic hydrogenation that utilizes frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) catalysts is a subject of growing interest because such catalysts offer a unique opportunity for the development of transition‐metal‐free hydrogenations. The aim of our recent efforts is to further increase the functional‐group tolerance and chemoselectivity of FLP catalysts by means of size‐exclusion catalyst design. Given that hydrogen molecule is the smallest molecule, our modified Lewis acids feature a highly shielded ...

Although problematic pornography use (PPU) might be considered the most frequent manifestation of hypersexuality, no previous research examined its association with ADHD symptoms. Aim To (i) examine ADHD symptoms in relation to hypersexuality and PPU and ( ...

Human ileal bile acid binding protein (I-BABP), a member of the family of intracellular lipid binding proteins, is thought to play a role in the enterohepatic circulation of bile salts. Previously, we have shown by stopped-flow fluorescence analysis that positive binding cooperativity exhibited by I-BABP in its interactions with glycocholate (GCA) and glycochenodeoxycholate (GCDA), the two primary bile salts in humans, is related to a slow conformational change in the protein. In this study, we used ...

This paper discusses the formation of nanosized hexagonal tungsten oxide (h-WO3) during the annealing of hexagonal ammonium tungsten bronze (HATB), (NH4)0.33−xWO3−y. This process was investigated by TG/DTA-MS, XRD, SEM, Raman, XPS, and 1H-MAS NMR analyses. Through adjusting the temperature and atmosphere of annealing HATB, the composition (W oxidation state, residual NH4+ and NH3 content) of h-WO3 could be controlled. The effect of composition on the conductivity and gas sensitivity of h-WO3 was studied. ...

Abstract The vagus is involved in mediating gastric cytoprotection and adaptive cytoprotection. However, the central and peripheral mechanisms through which the vagus expresses its action are still poorly known. Medullary thyrotropin‐releasing hormone (TRH) plays an important role in the vagal regulation of gastric function. The stable TRH analogue, RX 77368, micro‐injected into the cisterna magna or the dorsal motor nucleus (DMN) of the vagus at a dose that did not influence gastric acid secretion ...

The highest amount was detected after the heat shock (HS) treatment of leaves. On the other hand, as a result of HS, the level of some potential formaldehyde generators (trigonelline, choline and N e - trimethyl- l -lysine ) moderately decreased in comparison to the normal room temperature (20°C). In the presence of dimedone the amount of these formaldehyde generators ...

The effects of drought stress, simulated by increasing concentrations of PEG, were examined on the photosynthetic processes of wheat and of Aegilops biuncialis genotypes originating from various habitats. In the course of moderate stress Ae. biuncialis lines originating from dry habitats fixed more CO2 than the wheats due to the less intense stomatal closure. After the greater water loss caused by hard drought stress they had more rapid regeneration ability compared to the wheats. In the case of ...
