The deposits corresponding to the Upper Cretaceous Neuquén and San Jorge Gulf basins from northern and central Patagonia have provided two of the most complete sequences of terrestrial vertebrate faunas of all Gondwanan landmasses. Among the carnivorous components, the carcharodontosaurid theropods appeared as common elements during the Early Cretaceous and the earliest Late Cretaceous in northern and central Patagonia. Although recorded mostly in the lower Turonian, isolated teeth suggest their ...

Lithium promoted 2%Pt/m-ZrO2 catalysts previously observed to exhibit higher rates for the low temperature water-gas shift (LTS) were tested for the ethanol steam reforming with the aim of exploring the potential tuning of the selectivity. Characterization of catalysts having optimized Li content (0.5–0.75%Li) for LTS exhibited (a) weakened CH bonding of formate, a proposed intermediate in the LTS mechanism, as shown by a shift in the ν(CH) band to lower wavenumbers, (b) a relatively low extent of blocking ...

Rare-earth phosphors exhibit unique luminescence polarization features originating from the anisotropic symmetry of the emitter ion's chemical environment. However, to take advantage of this peculiar property, it is necessary to control and measure the ensemble orientation of the host particles with a high degree of precision. Here, we show a methodology to obtain the photoluminescence polarization of Eu-doped LaPO4 nano rods assembled in an electrically modulated liquid-crystalline phase. We measure ...

In this contribution, we examine the effect of the promoter´s ionic charge and valence orbital energy on the catalytic activity of Fe-based catalysts, based on in situ synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction (SXRPD), temperature-programmed-based techniques (TPR, TPD, CO-TP carburization), and Fischer–Tropsch synthesis catalytic testing studies. We compared the promoting effects of K (a known promoter for longer-chained products) with Ba, which has a similar ionic radius but has double the ionic charge. ...

Fluorescent microarrays exploit fluorescent labeled targets bound to immobilized biomolecular probes. Their signal-to-noise ratio is limited by the collection aperture in common confocal geometries. Taking advantage of a very high rejection filter deposited onto a silicon arrayed detector (coupled-charge device or complementary metal-oxide semiconductor), it is demonstrated that a highly compact lens-free assay with photon collection of order unity operates with a 30-fold improvement over a conventional ( ...

Recent studies in maritime logistics have introduced a general ship routing problem and a benchmark suite based on real shipping segments, considering pickups and deliveries, cargo selection, ship-dependent starting locations, travel times and costs, time windows, and incompatibility constraints, among other features. Together, these characteristics pose considerable challenges for exact and heuristic methods, and some cases with as few as 18 cargoes remain unsolved. To face this challenge, we propose ...

A remarkably diverse terrestrial mesoeucrocodylian fauna has been recovered from the continental Cretaceous of the Bauru Basin in fluvial and lacustrine deposits. Members of at least six distinct groups are now recognized, including notosuchids, sphagesaurids, candidodontids, peirosaurids, trematochampsids, and baurusuchids. These mostly terrestrial crocodyliforms potentially developed ecological strategies that allowed them to live in a hot and arid climate during the Cretaceous. A new genus and ...

Reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) is a vital step in producing syngas for the chemical conversion of CO2 to liquid transportation fuels and chemicals. Na-doping of m-ZrO2 supported Pt catalysts allowed selectivity control by systematically increasing the ratio of relative rates of rCO/rCH4. This was achieved by facilitating the formation of formate intermediate species, which precedes CO formation, and by suppressing the metallic Pt0 active sites responsible for CH4 formation. A 2.5%Na-2%Pt/m-ZrO2 catalyst ...

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) remains a challenging cancer to treat despite all the advances of the last 50 years. Kallikrein 5 (KLK5) is among the serine proteases implicated in OSCC development. However, whether the activity of KLK5 promotes carcinogenesis is still controversial. Moreover, knowledge regarding the role of the KLK5 cognate inhibitor, Lympho-Epithelial Kazal-Type related Inhibitor (LEKTI), in OSCC is scarce. We have, thus, sought to investigate the importance of KLK5 and LEKTI ...

Ureases are metalloenzymes involved in defense mechanisms in plants. The insecticidal activity of Canavalia ensiformis (jack bean) ureases relies partially on an internal 10kDa peptide generated by enzymatic hydrolysis of the protein within susceptible insects. A recombinant version of this peptide, jaburetox, exhibits insecticidal, antifungal and membrane-disruptive properties. Molecular modeling of jaburetox revealed a prominent β-hairpin motif consistent with either neurotoxicity or pore formation. ...
