Lead (Pb) isotopes provide valuable insights into the origin of Pb within a sample, typically allowing for reliable fingerprinting of their source. This is useful for a variety of applications, from tracing sources of pollution-related Pb, to the origins of Pb in archaeological artefacts. However, current approaches investigate source proportions via graphical means, or simple mixing models. As such, an approach, which quantitatively assesses source proportions and fingerprints the signature of analysed ...

Lead isotopes combined with trace element data represent a powerful tool for non‐ferrous metal provenance studies. Nevertheless, unconsidered geological factors and archaeological data, as well as ignored analytical procedures, may substantially modify the interpretation of the isotopic and trace element signature obtained as a potential ore candidate. Three archaeological examples, accompanied by high‐resolution lead isotopic measurements ( MC – ICP – MS ), are presented here to discuss the above‐mentioned ...

ABSTRACT Roşia Montană, Romania, is Europe’s largest gold deposit, with a current identifıed resource of ~400 Mt at 1.3 g/t Au and 6 g/t Ag. The deposit is hosted by a Miocene age maar-diatreme complex emplaced into Cretaceous flysch-type sedimentary rocks and intruded by dacite domes. High-resolution 40Ar/39Ar dating of adularia associated with gold-bearing veins suggests a protracted period of episodic mineralization spanning about 500,000 years. The major gold mineral is electrum, associated with ...

The breccia-hosted epithermal Au-Ag deposit of Roşia Montană is located 7 km northeast of Abrud, in the northern part of the South Apuseni Mountains, Romania.Estimated total reserves of 214.91 Mt of ore at 1.46 g/t Au and 6.9 g/t Ag (10.1 Moz of Au and 47.6 Moz of Ag) make Roşia Montană one of the largest gold deposits in Europe. At this location, Miocene calc-alkaline magmatic and hydrothermal activity was associated with local extensional tectonics within a strike-slip regime related to the indentation ...

Two types of hydrovolcanic breccias are generally accepted: phreatomagmatic and phreatic. Due to their specific characteristics generated during the brecciation, characteristics that control the ore deposition, these breccias represent favourable hosts for mineralization. The depth of formation, the general form and dimensions, the breccia - host rock contact, as well as fragments, matrix, and open spaces altogether control the position and the size of the breccia hosted ore bodies and contribute ...

Abstract The Celtic culture of Western Europe left magnificent gold objects, such as jewellery and weapons from nobility graves and hoarded coins, as well as field evidence of pre-Roman gold mining and metallurgical workshops that attest to the mining of local ores. This is the case of Central France where many precious metallic ores have been mined throughout the ages from the Prehistoric times onwards. One of the lingering problems in assessing the provenance of gold artefacts and coins is the ...

Alburnite, ideally Ag8GeTe2S4, was discovered in the Cârnicel vein from the Roşia Montana epithermal Au-Ag ore deposit, Apuseni Mountains, Romania. The new mineral is associated with tetrahedrite, galena, pyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and tellurides (hessite, altaite, and sylvanite). Associated gangue minerals are rhodochrosite, quartz, calcite, and rhodonite. Alburnite was observed only at the microscopic scale as rounded to sub-rounded grains, veinlets or irregular inclusions hosted mainly ...

ABSTRACT A measuring technique for antenna gain is presented, based on averaging a normalized transfer function over a distance range. Criteria for setting the distance range are drawn by investigating the effects of reflection and diffraction. Our method is compared to the time‐gating method by measuring two low‐gain, quasi nondirectional antennas. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 56:1553–1557, 2014

An accurate preoperative diagnosis of parotid tumors is essential for selection and planning of the surgical treatment. Various modern cross-sectional imaging and cytologic investigations can support differential diagnosis of parotid tumors. The aim of this study was to achieve a comprehensive and updated review of modern imaging and cytologic investigations used in parotid tumor diagnosis, based on the latest literature data. This literature review could serve as a guide for clinicians in selecting ...

For the last 2000 years gold has been mined in the Southern Apuseni Mountains in Romania from both primary (hydrothermal) and secondary (river placer) deposits. The gold-bearing area covers about 900 km 2 and represents the richest Au-Ag province in Europe. The ore originating from the Southern Apuseni Mountains is known as ''Transylvanian gold''. The hydrothermal deposits studied here are associated with Neogene volcanism and classify as intermediate- to low-sulphidation epithermal type. We studied ...

Phreatic and phreatomagmatic breccias are the two end-member styles of hydromagmatic breccias. A previous contribution deals with phreatomagmatic breccias with an emphasis on their general features and those genetic criteria that allow an accurate and rapid recognition. Phreatic breccias are presented here. Their general features, i.e. environment/ depth of formation, general form/geometry, dimensions, contacts with the host rocks, fragments, matrix, alteration, mineralization, surface connection, ...

Čumavići is a medium– to low–temperature hydrothermal Sb–Zn–Pb–Ag polymetallic vein–type ore deposit in the Srebrenica orefield, part of the Podrinje Metallogenic District, Eastern Bosnia and Herzegovina. The ore deposit occurs in the form of simple and complex veins along faults and fractures, as well as stockworks and disseminations hosted within Neogene volcanic rocks (pyroclastics and andesite lavas of calc–alkaline affinity). The deposit comprises sulfides (sphalerite, galena, stibnite, pyrite, ...

Brain metastases represent more than 50% of all cerebral tumors encountered in clinical practice. Recently, there has been increased interest in the study of extracellular vesicles, and the knowledge about exosomes is constantly expanding. Exosomes are drivers for organotropic metastatic spread, playing important roles in the brain metastatic process by increasing the permeability of the blood–brain barrier and preparing the premetastatic niche. The promising results of the latest experimental studies ...

ABSTRACT Although the primary protein sequence of ubiquitin (Ub) is extremely stable over evolutionary time, it is highly tolerant to mutation during selection experiments performed in the laboratory. We have proposed that this discrepancy results from the difference between fitness under laboratory culture conditions and the selective pressures in changing environments over evolutionary timescales. Building on our previous work (Mavor et al., 2016), we used deep mutational scanning to determine how ...

Non melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) is one of the most common types of skin cancer. It has a number of subtypes, which include basal cell carcinoma, cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma and Merkel cell carcinoma. MicroRNAs are short, non-coding RNA (ribonucleic acid) molecules, capable of regulating gene expression at a post transcriptional level. They play a pivotal role in a variety of physiologic cellular functions and pathologies, including malignant diseases. The development of miRNAs represents an ...
