We review the uses of electronic health care data algorithms, measures of their accuracy, and reasons for prioritizing one measure of accuracy over another. We use real studies to illustrate the variety of uses of automated health care data in epidemiologic and health services research. Hypothetical examples show the impact of different types of misclassification when algorithms are used to ascertain exposure and outcome.High algorithm sensitivity is important for reducing the costs and burdens associated ...

Chemokines are key molecules in directing leukocyte migration toward sites of inflammation. We have previously cloned a putative CC chemokine receptor gene, TER1, whose expression is restricted to lymphoid tissues and cell lines. Recently, this receptor has been shown to signal in response to the human CC chemokine I-309 and thus it has been renamed CCR8 according to the current nomenclature. In the present study, we report the identification of the CC chemokines thymus and activation-regulated ...

The efficacy of screening mammography in reducing breast cancer mortality continues to be controversial. In addition, few data exist on the efficacy of screening mammography in women 70 years of age or older. An organized screening mammogram program has existed in Saskatchewan since the mid-1990s. It offers mammography every 2 years to women ≥50 years of age.We conducted a population-based case-control study to evaluate the efficacy of screening mammography, as practiced in Saskatchewan, Canada. ...

Congenital or infantile hydrocephalus is caused by genetic and non‐genetic factors and is highly heterogeneous in etiology. In recent studies, a limited number of genetic causes of hydrocephalus have been identified. To date, recessive mutations in the CCDC88C gene have been identified as a cause of non‐syndromic congenital hydrocephalus in three reported families. Here, we report the fourth known family with two affected individuals with congenital hydrocephalus due to a homozygous mutation in ...

We use LAMOST DR4 M giants combined with Gaia DR2 proper motions and ALLWISE photometry to obtain an extremely pure sample of Sagittarius (Sgr) stream stars. Using TiO5 and CaH spectral indices as an indicator, we selected out a large sample of M giant stars from M dwarf stars in LAMOST DR4 spectra. Considering the position, distance, proper motion and the angular momentum distribution, we obtained 164 pure Sgr stream stars. We find that the trailing arm has higher energy than the leading arm in ...

Abstract The effect of stellar multiplicity on planetary architecture and orbital dynamics provides an important context for exoplanet demographics. We present a volume-limited catalog of up to 300 pc of 66 stars hosting planets and planet candidates from Kepler, K2, and TESS with significant Hipparcos-Gaia proper motion anomalies, which indicates the presence of companions. We assess the reliability of each transiting planet candidate using ground-based follow-up observations, and find that the ...

Shaping the vertebrate eye requires evagination of the optic vesicles. These vesicles subsequently fold into optic cups prior to undergoing neurogenesis and allocating a population of late progenitors at the margin of the eye. mab21l2 encodes a protein of unknown biological function expressed in the developing optic vesicles, and loss of mab21l2 function results in malformed eyes. The bases of these defects are, however, poorly understood. To further study mab21l2 we used CRISPR/Cas9 to generate ...

Use of combined hormone therapy (CHT) is associated with increased breast cancer incidence, but it is unclear whether this translates into increased breast cancer mortality. To address this question, we conducted a population-based nested case–control study in Saskatchewan, Canada, where a population-based prescription drug database has existed since 1975. We evaluated fatal breast cancer risk in relation to recency and duration of use of CHT and unopposed estrogen hormone therapy (EHT). A total of ...

Abstract The inference of stellar parameters (such as radius and mass) through asteroseismic forward modelling depends on the number, accuracy, and precision of seismic and atmospheric constraints. ESA’s Gaia space mission is providing precise parallaxes which yield an additional constraint to be included in the model grid search. Using a handful of main-sequence benchmark stars, we perform a uniform characterisation of these stars. We assess the accuracy and precision of stellar parameters inferred ...

Methods: We analyzed data on 20,379 treatment-naive HIV-1-infected adults who started HAART in 1 of 12 cohort studies in Europe and North America (61,798 person-years of follow-up, 1844 AIDS events, and 1005 deaths). Results: Although baseline CD4 cell count became less ...
