An interaction between phenytoin (PHT) and clonazepam (CZP) occurred in an epileptic patient, who had been treated with PHT with partial seizure control. The addition of CZP brought about a significant decrease of PHT plasma levels (from 24.8 to 16 μg/ml) in spite of increases in the PHT dose. Gradual reduction of CZP, without modifying the PHT dosage, caused significant increases in PHT plasma levels to 42.4 μg/ml with signs of intoxication. A review of the literature shows contradictions: some authors ...

Abstract The mechanisms of peroxisomal biogenesis remain incompletely understood, specially regarding the role of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) in human cells, where genetic disorders of peroxisome biogenesis lead to Zellweger syndrome (ZS). The Pex3p peroxisomal membrane protein (PMP) required for early steps of peroxisome biogenesis has been detected in the ER in yeast but not in mammalian cells. Here, we show that Pex3p‐GFP expressed in a new ZS cell line (MR), which lacks peroxisomes due to a mutation ...

Abstract According to the United Nations Environment Programme, one-third of the world's population lives in a situation of water stress. In the case of New Mexico, about 90% of the 1.8 million inhabitants depend on ground brackish water as their only source of potable water in many areas of the state. This report presents a technically-supported, economically-feasible and environmentally friendly proposal to desalinate brackish water to supply potable water to inland, isolated communities in southwest ...

This study assesses the quality, as a diagnostic test, of the main indicators of morphological sexual dimorphism through direct anthropometry, biostatistics tools and clinical epidemiology. This study used 284 skulls of adult Brazilians, of which 187 were male and 97 female.A study of the cross-evaluation of the diagnostic test was performed; it was a qualitative approach based on visual examination of 16 traditional indicators of morphological sexual dimorphism, where each indicator determined the ...

Numerous studies have shown that skeletal characteristics vary among different populations.Several authors suggest that it is possible to determine sex through the anatomical evaluation of children mandible, however there are few morphometrical studies conducted with such specimens. The purpose of this study was to analyze several mandibular dimensions and identify the ones that could be useful to perform sex differentiation in a sample of Brazilian young children. For this study we used 32 children ...

The sex determination of human skeletons is important in forensic and anthropological research. It can be carried out through qualitative or quantitative analysis of morphological parameters of dimorphism. The shape of the piriform aperture is one of the classic indicators of sexual dimorphism since it describes differences between males and females according to strong populationspecific behavior. The purpose of this study was to analyze the presence of sexual dimorphism in the size of the piriform ...

The purpose of this study is to assess the presence of sexual dimorphism in the foramen magnum size.We analyzed 211 human skulls from the collection of the Universidade Federal de São Paulo, with a record of sex and age determined using anteroposterior and transverse diameters of foramen magnum, and their differences by gender (p<0.05) were ascertained.Fischer linear discriminant function was calculated and the value for the classification of these variables was determined. All the dimensions were ...

The sex determination from human skulls can be made by means of morphologic and morphometric methods have been broadly studied. These methods contribute with objective data; however, they present interpopulational variability. The purpose of this article is to determine sexual dimorphism using lineal dimensions in a sample of human skulls collection belonging to the Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP), calculating the discriminant function. To complete the selection approaches, 226 skulls were ...

El Yali coastal reserve is the most important wetland complex in Mediterranean climate central Chile, especially due to the native and foreign bird fauna which arrives here periodically. The coastal lagoon, part of a microtidal estuary (1.2m tidal range), is a shallow (< 1m depth) dynamic system and unique site of coexistence of northern halophyte and southern palustrian riparian vegetation. This study identifies and quantifies the effect of forcing variables in the lagoon water level over 1 year of ...

Establish a person's identity can be a very complex process, one of the main objectives of the forensic sciences. The analysis of the teeth, fingerprints and DNA comparison, are probably the most used technics, allowing fast and secure identification processes. However, these techniques can not always be applied, in some cases, it is necessary to apply different and less known techniques. In this work, a systematic analysis of the shape and dimensions of the palatal rugae was performed. We analyzed ...

Samples of men aimed to be representative of the population from which they were drawn, but the population in each centre was not designed to be representative of the whole country. ...

In forensic medicine, diagnosis of sex is the first step in the identification of human skulls.A first approximation is carried out via the qualitative analysis of a series of morphological indicators of sexual dimorphism.Classical studies (Krogman & Iscan, 1986) described 14 indicators for the diagnosis of sex with an accuracy of 90%, and one of these indicators is the shape of the palate. This study analyzed the effect of the loss of teeth on the accuracy of the diagnosis of sex in Brazilians adult ...
