This paper considers two applications of control variates to the Monte Carlo valuation of American options. The main contribution of the paper lies in the particular choice of a control variate for American or Bermudan options. It is shown that for any martingale process used as a control variate, it is optimal to sample no later than the time of exercise of the American option, as opposed to the time of expiry. The first application is to the valuation. Numerical examples show that standard errors ...

Quantitative societal culture research (QSCR) in organization studies crystallizes a configuration of social science perspectives and methods that became prominent in the 1970s. We consider the qualities of and boundaries around cultural groups that this tradition emphasizes, and other characteristics of cultural groups that it does not emphasize. Current debates surrounding this tradition reflect both recent social science innovations and rediscoveries of early social science perspectives. Our analysis ...

An analysis of applications and replications of the work of Geert Hofstede was based on a collection of citations of published and unpublished material. Four types of usage were found: citations, reviews, empirical replications, and as a paradigm. The role of Hofstede's work is illustrated by the number of citations, the widespread usage of Hofstede's culture types beyond citation as well as con firmation of the results and validation of the dimensions by empirical research.

Background Left ventricular (LV) remodeling after myocardial infarction (MI) has received much attention because of its severe impact on morbidity and mortality rates. However, the incidence and extent of LV remodeling in a modern infarct population who were offered antiremodeling treatment in compliance with daily clinical practice is unknown. The purpose of this study was to clarify this issue and to evaluate the predictive value of N-terminal pro brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP). Methods Forty- ...

The presence and magnitude of photorespiration in the submersed freshwater angiosperm Scirpus subterminalis Torr. was investigated by gas-exchange characteristics in an open water-flow system. The minimal rates of photorespiration during active photosynthesis were measured by following the time course of differential 14 CO 2 and 12 CO 2 uptake. At 8 mg O 2 L −1 (equal to oxygen saturation at 20 °C), the rate was 0.4 μg C (mg organic dry weight) −1 h −1 , which was about 10% of net photosynthesis under the ...

Earlier studies have explored the differences between known-assailant sexual assaults and stranger assaults and reported the stranger assaults as being more violent. Only a few studies have discriminated between sexual assaults by intimate partners from assaults by other known assailants when comparing with assaults by strangers. In this study, we explored differences in the extent of violence and physical injury in sexual assaults committed by intimate partners compared with assaults by strangers ...

To determine whether the Evaluation of Social Interaction (ESI) is sensitive enough to differentiate between people without identified diagnoses and those with neurologic or psychiatric disorders in terms of their observed quality of social interaction. METHOD. Participants were age 16–69 and were without identified diagnoses (n = 304) or had neurologic (n = 77) or psychiatric (n = 104) disorders. They were evaluated using the ESI. RESULTS. This paper presents four key developments that are leading to the scalability of the fabrication processes of mycelium material. We develop a biological and digital fabrication pipeline for (1) growing large mycelium composite blocks, (2) on-site robotic wire-cutting, (3) using mycelium materials as a multi-functional formwork, and (4) implementing the self-healing of fungal organisms. The purpose of the research is to investigate the processing approaches, variable material handling and materials properties ...

Sodium–glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibition was originally developed as a facile way of lowering blood glucose through increased renal elimination. However, clinical trials have demonstrated that SGLT2 inhibition not only improves glycemic control but also increases circulating ketone bodies and hematocrit (1,2). Recently, SGLT2 inhibitor–driven modest hyperketonemia has attracted much focus as a possible explanation of the improved cardiac outcome in patients treated with SGLT2 inhibitors (3), ...

The discrete wavelet transform module is a recent addition to the Large Time-Frequency Analysis Toolbox (LTFAT). It provides implementations of various generalizations of Mallat's well-known algorithm (iterated filterbank) such that completely general filterbank trees, dual-tree complex wavelet transforms, and wavelet packets can be computed. The resulting transforms can be equivalently represented as filterbanks and analyzed as filterbank frames using fast algorithms.

Open access is a well-known externality problem in fisheries causing excess capacity and overfishing. Due to global warming, externality problems from CO2 emissions have gained increased interest. With two externality problems, a first-best optimum can be achieved by using two regulatory instruments. However, solving the open-access externality problem also affects CO2 emissions. By using a bio-economic model covering Iceland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, and the Faroe Islands, it is shown that regulations ...

Blends of copolymers of styrene and acrylonitrile (SAN) and poly(methylmethacrylate), (PMMA) were studied because they are both amorphous, thermally stable, have large density differences, are easy to cut (in an ultramicrotome) and because comprehensive studies have been reported In the literature on this system. The melt viscosity of the blends were studied using a Rheometrics Mechanical Spectrometer ...

Brain- and N-terminal pro brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) have been identified as promising markers for heart failure. However, previous studies have revealed that they may hold insufficient diagnostic power for implementation into clinical practice because of a significant overlap in the range of plasma levels between healthy subjects and subjects with heart failure. We hypothesized that imprecision of the reference method (ie, the echocardiographic evaluation of left ventricular [LV] function) ...
