This study aimed to test and evaluate antibacterial and antifungal activities of secondary metabolites obtained from endophytic fungi isolated from the leaves of endemic plant Zygophyllum mandavillei. The fungus Cladosporium cladosporioides was the predominant isolated fungus with colonization and dominance frequencies percentage of 12.50 and 39.32 respectively. C. cladosporioides extract was found to have the best antimicrobial activity causing a zone of inhibition ranging from 20.7 to 25.7 mm ...

Egypt has one of the highest prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) worldwide. Ophthalmological side effects are recognized complications of interferon (IFN) therapy. This study aimed to evaluate IFN-induced ophthalmological manifestations in patients receiving PEGylated interferon (PEG IFN) and ribavirin (RBV) and to assess the effect of IFN duration, response and systemic risk factors on the severity. We retrospectively analyzed 100 patients with chronic HCV who were candidates for PEG-IFN and RBV therapy. ...

Abstract BACKGROUND The recovery of metal ions from aqueous solutions for environmental preservation or resource saving requires the development of new sorbents with enhanced separation properties. A new process has been designed for the functionalization of magnetic chitosan microparticles with grafting of either amidoxime (AO‐AHC) or hydrazinyl amine (HZ‐AHC). Their sorption properties have been tested for the recovery of uranium(VI) and zirconium(IV) from aqueous solutions. RESULTS A wide range ...

Paediatric cancer is a leading cause of death for children. Children in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) were four times more likely to die than children in high-income countries (HICs). This study aimed to test the hypothesis that the COVID-19 pandemic had affected the delivery of healthcare services worldwide, and exacerbated the disparity in paediatric cancer outcomes between LMICs and HICs.A multicentre, international, collaborative cohort study.91 hospitals and cancer centres in ...

This study aimed to identify a single miRNA or miR (microRNA) which regulates the three insulin‐like growth factor‐2‐mRNA‐binding proteins (IGF2BP1, 2 and 3). Bioinformatics predicted miR‐1275 to simultaneously target the three IGF2BPs, and screening revealed miR‐1275 to be underexpressed in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) tissues. Transfection of HuH‐7 cells with miR‐1275 suppressed IGF2BPs expression and all three IGF2BPs were confirmed as targets of miR‐1275. Ectopic expression of miR‐1275 and knockdown ...

AbstractIGF2BP 1, 2 and 3 control the fate of many transcripts. Immunoprecipitation studies demonstrated the IGF2BPs to bind to IGF1R mRNA, and our laboratory has recently shown them to post-transcriptionally regulate IGF1R. This study sought to identify a microRNA regulating the IGF2BPs and consequently IGF1R. All three IGF2BPs were among the top-ranked predicted targets of let-7i. Let-7i was downregulated in HCC tissues, and transfection of HuH-7 with let-7i inhibited malignant cell behaviors ...

Excessive use of fructose has been incriminated as a risk factor for hepatic steatosis. Procollagen type III N-terminal peptide (P3NP) is a marker for steatohepatitis. Thus, we aimed to assess fructose intake in obese children and its relation to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and P3NP.Fifty-five obese children were compared to 30 controls. All were subjected to dietary fructose and anthropometric assessment, fasting blood sugar (FBS), fasting insulin (FI) and homeostasis model assessment ...

Background Parasites are well-known immune-modulators. They inhibit some aspects of the immune system to ensure persistence inside the host for a long time; meanwhile, they stimulate other immune aspects to assure the survival of the host. Wide variations in the severity of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) among developed and developing countries were reported during the COVID-19 pandemic. Parasitic infections, including Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii), were claimed to contribute to such variations. ...

Abstract A simple and direct method has been developed to grow zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods (NRs) on a fluorine-doped tin oxide-coated glass (FTO) substrate. Firstly, spray pyrolysis deposition method is applied followed by dipping the substrate in a solution of ZnO growth reagents. The morphology, structure, and optical properties of the obtained thin film are investigated. The results demonstrate the successful synthesis of the ZnO NRs on FTO substrate. The NRs have a hexagonal rod like structure with ...
