The examination of a population sample of urban Zulu adults in Durban revealed a number of differences between the nutritional states of men and women. There was considerably more adiposity among the women, manifested both in higher relative weights and in greater skinfold thickness measurements. It was concluded that this finding was probably largely related to their greater caloric intake and/or their lesser degree of activity, relative to the men. A high valuation is placed on female stoutness ...

The correlates of hypertension were examined in a population sample of an urban Zulu community. Despite the high prevalence of hypertension in this community in comparison with that reported in a rural Zulu community, this study gave evidence of more hypertension among persons who had spent a shorter than among those who had spent a longer period of their lives in town. This finding was statistically significant among women aged 18–34. A similar but not significant trend was found among women aged ...

A single woman in eighteenth-century British America possessed same legal, if not political, rights as a single man, but when she married she became a feme covert, thereby undergoing a substantial change in legal status. Historians have disagreed on meaning of coverture in colonial period and in their assessments of legal relationship of wives to husbands and to system of law in general.' English common law dictated major terms of judicial arrangements for feme covert in colonies. While some historians ...

Abstract This essay deals with coping processes of childhood trauma of survivors who were children during World War II over the lifecycle in a nonclinical group. The main issues refer to: (1) responses to war memories immediately after the war and 40 years later; (2) dealing with memories and feelings at present; (3) victims' feelings and attitudes toward the persecutor; (4) attitudes of survivors' children to the war experience of their parents; and (5) coping styles immediately and 40 years after the ...

This chapter explains the different aspects of the structure and function of mitochondrial aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases. Some of the discussion speculates on the broader question of how this family of enzymes may have evolved. Aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases are important components of the translational machinery of all cells. In eukaryotes, the situation is more complex. Animals and fungi synthesize proteins in two physically separate cellular compartments, the cytoplasm and mitochondria. The contribution ...

A region of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae mitochondrial cytochrome b gene encompassing the entire terminal intron plus flanking exonic sequences has been cloned in an SP6 vector. A runoff transcript prepared from this construct as well as the native cytochrome b pre-mRNA containing the terminal intervening sequence were found to act as substrates for the autocatalytic excision of the intervening sequence in vitro. This reaction proceeds under conditions previously shown by Cech and co-workers to ...

The terminal intron (bI2) of the yeast mitochondrial cytochrome b gene is a group I intron capable of self-splicing in vitro at high concentrations of Mg2+. Excision of bI2 in vivo, however, requires a protein encoded by the nuclear gene CBP2. The CBP2 protein has been partially purified from wild-type yeast mitochondria and shown to promote splicing at physiological concentrations of Mg2+. The self-splicing and protein-dependent splicing reactions utilized a guanosine nucleoside cofactor, the hallmark ...

The yeast nuclear gene MSD1 coding for mitochondrial aspartyl-tRNA synthetase has been cloned and sequenced. The identity of the gene is confirmed by the following evidence. (i) The primary structure of the protein derived from the gene sequence is similar to that of the yeast cytoplasmic aspartyl-tRNA synthetase. (ii) In situ disruption of MSD1 in a respiratory-competent haploid strain of yeast induces a pleiotropic phenotype consistent with a lesion in mitochondrial protein synthesis. (iii) Mitochondria ...

The cell's main receptor for VEGF, VEGFR2 (Kdr) is one of the most important positive regulators of new blood vessel growth and its downstream signalling is well characterized. By contrast, VEGFR1 (Flt1) and the mechanisms by which this VEGF receptor promotes branching morphogenesis in angiogenesis remain relatively unclear. Here we report that engagement of VEGFR1 activates a Rab4A-dependent pathway that transports alphavbeta3 Integrin from early endosomes to the plasma membrane, and that this is ...

The yeast CBP2 gene product is required for the splicing of the terminal intron (bI5) of the mitochondrial cytochrome b pre-mRNA in vivo. In vitro, bI5 RNA self-splices efficiently only at high MgCl2 concentrations (50 mM); at 5 mM MgCl2, efficient splicing requires purified CBP2 protein. To determine the sequences within bI5 recognized by the protein, we have constructed deletion and substitution mutants of the RNA. Their binding to CBP2 was assessed by their ability to inhibit protein-dependent ...

SUMMARY. This paper deals with the struggle to live despite massive traumatic events among individuals who were children during World War Two. The material for the paper was taken from a series of interviews with Shoah child survivors who were drawn from a non‐clinical population. The interviews attempted to explore how the Shoah experience affected some of the natural expressions of feeling that are universal in childhood. More specifically, the paper focuses on crying, dreams and treasured objects. ...

Cell proliferation in the developing renal tubules of Drosophila is strikingly patterned, occurring in two phases to generate a consistent number of tubule cells. The later phase of cell division is promoted by EGF receptor signalling from a specialised subset of tubule cells, the tip cells, which express the protease Rhomboid and are thus able to secrete the EGF ligand, Spitz. We show that the response to EGF signalling, and in consequence cell division, is patterned by the specification of a second ...
