Studies of farmers' failure to implement biosecurity practices frequently frame their behavior as a lack of intention. More recent studies have argued that farmers' behaviors should be conceptualized as emergent from farming experiences rather than a direct consequence of specific intentions. Drawing on the concepts of "cowshed" culture and the "Trigger Change Model," we explore how farmers' livestock purchasing behavior is shaped by farms' natural and physical environments and identify what triggers ...

The mobility of livestock in modern farming systems is connected with the geographical spread of animal disease. Government attempts to control this geography increasingly rely on practices of self-government that create new farming subjectivities to shape farming conduct. However, studies show that perceptions of luck are influential in shaping behaviour to environmental hazards, as are socio-cultural concepts of ‘good farming’ in which forms of cultural capital define appropriate conduct. This ...

Over the past several decades, infectious disease modeling has become an essential tool for creating counterfactual scenarios that allow the effectiveness of different disease control policies to be evaluated prior to implementation in the real world. For livestock diseases, these models have become increasingly sophisticated as researchers have gained access to rich national livestock traceability databases, which enables inclusion of explicit spatial and temporal patterns in animal movements through ...

Interactions between Francisella tularensis and the host are slowly being elucidated. Microarray technology was used to further characterise the response of Balb/c mice after inhalation of the virulent F. tularensis, SchuS4. The validated array data revealed changes in expression of 476 genes across a 96 h time course following infection (p ≤ 0.05). These data confirm down-regulation of the toll-like receptor pathway (TLR3, 4, 5, 7 and 8), and the induction of IFN-γ inducible genes (T-cell specific GTPase, ...

The impacts of exotic disease incursions on livestock industries can be mitigated by having robust surveillance systems in place that decrease the time between disease introduction and detection. An important component of this is having farmers routinely observe their animals for indications of clinical disease, recognise the existence of problems, and then decide to notify their veterinarian or animal health authorities. However, as highlighted by this literature review, farmers are believed to ...

For the first time, a comprehensive comparative study of the impact of different sources of statistical variability in nonvolatile memory (NVM) has been carried out using the 3-D numerical simulation of large statistical ensembles and approaches based on the impedance-field method. Results of the threshold voltage variability in a template 32-nm floating-gate NVM subject to random discrete dopants (RDD), line edge roughness, oxide thickness fluctuations, polysilicon granularity, and interface trapped ...

Xingsheng Wang, Gareth Roy, O. Saxod, A. Bajolet, A. Juge, Asen Asenov,
Comprehensive 3-D simulations have been carried out and compared with experimental data highlighting the dominant sources of statistical variability in 32-nm high-κ/metal gate MOSFET technology. The statistical variability sources include random discrete dopants, line edge roughness, and metal gate granularity. Their relative importance is highlighted in the numerical simulations. Excellent agreement is achieved between the simulated and measured standard deviation of the threshold voltage.
