Abstract Background Research on psychosocial stress and risk of breast cancer has produced conflicting results. Few studies have assessed this relation by breast cancer subtype or specifically among Black women, who experience unique chronic stressors. Methods We used prospective data from the Black Women’s Health Study, an ongoing cohort study of 59,000 US Black women, to assess neighborhood- and individual-level psychosocial factors in relation to risk of breast cancer. We used factor analysis ...

Distributions of freshwater (sea‐ice melt and runoff) were investigated along inshore‐offshore sections in southwestern Hudson Bay for fall conditions. Conductivity‐temperature‐density profiles and bottle samples collected for salinity, oxygen isotope ( δ 18 O), and colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) analyses were used to discriminate between contributions of river water (RW) and sea‐ice melt (SIM). Stations had a fresh summer surface mixed layer 5–25 m thick overlying a cold subsurface layer indicative ...

Abstract A conceptual scheme for the transition from winter to spring is developed for a small Arctic estuary (Churchill River, Hudson Bay) using hydrological, meteorological and oceanographic data together with models of the landfast ice. Observations within the Churchill River estuary and away from the direct influence of the river plume (Button Bay), between March and May 2005, show that both sea ice (production and melt) and river water influence the region's freshwater budget. In Button Bay, ice ...

There is a considerable need to rationalize the membrane permeability and mechanism of transport for potential nutraceuticals. The aim of this investigation was to develop a theoretical permeability equation, based on a reported descriptive absorption model, enabling calculation of the transcellular component of absorption across Caco-2 monolayers. Published data for Caco-2 permeability of 30 drugs transported by the transcellular route were correlated with the descriptors 1-octanol/water distribution ...

Autosomal recessive juvenile parkinsonism (ARJP) is an early onset familial form of Parkinson's disease. Approximately 50% of all ARJP cases are attributed to mutations in the gene park2, coding for the protein parkin. Parkin is a multidomain E3 ubiquitin ligase with six distinct domains including an N-terminal ubiquitin-like (Ubl) domain. In this work we examined the structure, stability, and interactions of the parkin Ubl domain containing most ARJP causative mutations. Using NMR spectroscopy we ...

Comparing photosynthetic and photovoltaic efficiencies is not a simple issue. Although both processes harvest the energy in sunlight, they operate in distinctly different ways and produce different types of products: biomass or chemical fuels in the case of natural photosynthesis and nonstored electrical current in the case of photovoltaics. In order to find common ground for evaluating energy-conversion efficiency, we compare natural photosynthesis with present technologies for photovoltaic-driven ...

Nadine Merkley, Kathryn R. Barber, Gary S. Shaw,
Degradation of misfolded and damaged proteins by the 26 S proteasome requires the substrate to be tagged with a polyubiquitin chain. Assembly of polyubiquitin chains and subsequent substrate labeling potentially involves three enzymes, an E1, E2, and E3. E2 proteins are key enzymes and form a thioester intermediate through their catalytic cysteine with the C-terminal glycine (Gly76) of ubiquitin. This thioester intermediate is easily hydrolyzed in vitro and has eluded structural characterization. ...

Experiments were designed to determine whether endogenous physiological fluctuations in sex steroid hormones affect expression or functional responses of endothelin receptors. Coronary arteries from sexually mature male, female, and ovariectomized pigs were prepared either for receptor binding or measurement of isometric force in organ chambers. Competitive binding of 125I-labeled endothelin-1 was significant for a one-site model with unlabeled endothelin-1 and a two-site model with unlabeled endothelin- ...

The first wide-line 2H NMR investigation of a receptor tyrosine kinase is reported. Selectively deuterated peptides from the membrane-associated portion of the human epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptor were synthesized for examination in lipid bilayers mimicking certain natural membrane features. The peptide sequence included the 23-amino acid hydrophobic stretch thought to span the membrane (Ile622−Met644 of the EGF receptor), plus the first 10 amino acids of the receptor's cytoplasmic domain ( ...

Periodic shedding of cloud cavitation is a common form of cavitation instability. The motion of a re-entrant liquid jet is central to this process but the mechanism which drives the phenomenon remains unclear, particularly for cavitation in cylindrical orifices. The current work describes an experimental investigation of the re-entrant jet mechanism for periodic cloud shedding in a large-scale (8.25 mm) cylindrical acrylic orifice. Refractive index matching and high-speed visualisation reveal in ...
