Abstract At micro‐site scale, the spatial pattern of a plant species depends on several factors including interactions with neighbours. It has been seen that unfavourable effects generate a negative association between plants, while beneficial effects generate a positive association. In grasslands, the presence of shrubby species promotes a particular microenvironment beneath their canopy that could affect differently the spatial distribution of plants with different tolerance to abiotic conditions. ...

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is often regarded as the next general-purpose technology with a rapid, penetrating, and far-reaching use over a broad number of industrial sectors. The main feature of new general-purpose technology is to enable new ways of production that may increase productivity. However, to date, only a few studies have investigated the likely productivity effects of AI at the firm-level, presumably due to limited data availability. We exploit unique survey data on firms' adoption ...

Dogs (Canis familiaris) are among the most abundant and widely distributed carnivores worldwide, and their presence can have negative impacts on native fauna. This study investigated the invasion of cacao agroforests by free-ranging dogs in Brazil. By monitoring the behavior of dogs using direct observations, we assessed whether direct (chasing and predation) and indirect (urine and fecal deposition) interactions with wildlife are more common when dogs enter the agroforests with humans than when they ...

Measures of traits are the basis of functional biological diversity. Numerous works consider mean species-level measures of traits while ignoring individual variance within species. However, there is a large amount of variation within species and it is increasingly apparent that it is important to consider trait variation not only between species, but also within species. Mammals are an interesting group for investigating trait-based approaches because they play diverse and important ecological ...

The thin-spined porcupine, Chaetomys subspinosus, is an endemic mammal of the Atlantic forest of northeastern Brazil. With its population declining, it has been listed as “vulnerable” in the Brazilian Red List. Its National Action Plan, published in 2011, intended to develop awareness projects about the species in local communities, to implement alternative income projects and protein consumption, and to evaluate hunting pressure. This study investigates rural residents' knowledge of the thin-spined ...

We studied the feeding ecology of the thin-spined porcupine (Chaetomys subspinosus), a small arboreal rodent endemic to the Atlantic rain forest of Brazil and threatened with extinction. We captured and radiotracked 4 free-ranging individuals and collected 1,177 feeding records in 944 h of observation between April 2005 and September 2006. We found that the animal feeds exclusively on the leaves of woody trees, preferring young leaves. Diet composition and foraging pattern did not vary seasonally, ...

The study examines the mediating effects of gender, race, and class in the Mariel Cuban immigrant adaptation process. It explores the significance of the Mariel identity by comparing the experiences of pre-1980 arrivals with those of the Mariel cohort (1980–1981) and post-Mariel arrivals (1982–1990, 1990–2000). The central question of the study is the extent to which the Marielitos' experience as a group with stigmatization and being labeled as “different” and pathological has persisted in having a ...

Xenarthrans-anteaters, sloths, and armadillos-have essential functions for ecosystem maintenance, such as insect control and nutrient cycling, playing key roles as ecosystem engineers. Because of habitat loss and fragmentation, hunting pressure, and conflicts with domestic dogs, these species have been threatened locally, regionally, or even across their full distribution ranges. The Neotropics harbor 21 species of armadillos, 10 anteaters, and 6 sloths. Our data set includes the families Chlamyphoridae ( ...

The threatened and poorly known thin-spined porcupine (Chaetomys subspinosus) is endemic to the highly deforested central portion of the Atlantic Forest of eastern Brazil. In southern Bahia, anecdotal observations suggested that native forest and shade cacao (Theobroma cacao) plantations are important habitats for this species. However, no studies have examined habitat preferences. We estimated the home-range size and determined the factors influencing habitat selection at landscape, home range, and ...

The threatened thin-spined porcupine (Chaetomys subspinosus), a forest-specialist endemic to the Brazilian Atlantic forest, was rarely detected in the wild during the 20th century. Previous geographic distribution assessments were carried out nearly three decades ago and were based on interview data. We performed extensive field surveys (based on active search and interviews), a literature review, and species distribution modeling to predict and validate a more reliable picture of its geographic distribution ...

Artificial Intelligence (AI) represents a set of techniques that enable new ways of innovation and allows firms to offer new features of products and services, to improve production, marketing and administration processes, and to introduce new business models. This paper analyses the extent to which the use of AI contributes to the innovation performance of firms. Based on firm-level data from the German part of the Community Innovation Survey (CIS) 2018, we examine the contribution of different AI ...

In this paper, solar radiation obtained from different frequently used databases is compared in some different locations. In the analyzed databases, the data come from ground measurement networks, or from different models and with different resolutions. The proposed methodology assumes the hypothesis that the uncertainty of the databases is approximately the same as the meteorological uncertainty of the location. Therefore the heterogeneity of the observations is due to different observations. A ...

High vascular flow aggravates lung damage in animal models of ventilator-induced lung injury. Positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) can attenuate ventilator-induced lung injury, but its continued effectiveness in the setting of antecedent lung injury is unclear. The objective of the present study was to evaluate whether the application of PEEP diminishes lung injury induced by concurrent high vascular flow and high alveolar pressures in normal lungs and in a preinjury lung model. Two series of experiments ...

The anti-apoptotic proteins from the Bcl-2 family are important therapeutic targets since they convey resistance to anticancer regimens. Despite the suspected functional redundancy among the six proteins of this subfamily, both basic studies and therapeutic approaches have focused mainly on BCL2, Bcl-xL, and MCL1. The role of BCL2L10, another member of this group, has been poorly studied in cancer and never has been in melanoma. We describe here that BCL2L10 is abundantly and frequently expressed ...

Abstract Global change imposes multiple challenges on species and, thus, a reliable prediction of current and future vulnerability of species must consider multiple stressors and intrinsic traits of species. Climate, physiology, and forest cover, for example, are required to evaluate threat to thermolabile forest-dependent species, such as sloths (Bradypus spp.; Mammalia: Xenarthra). Here, we estimated future changes in the distribution of three sloth species using a metabolic-hybrid model focused ...

Background: Abiotic microhabitat amelioration and protection from herbivores are two of the main mechanisms associated with facilitative interactions in plant communities.Aims: We investigated the effect of the shrub Acanthostyles buniifolius on the herbaceous community of a subhumid grassland in order to disentangle the protective role of the shrub from its effect on ameliorating the abiotic conditions of microhabitats. Methods: In two contiguous areas, one continuously grazed and the other excluded ...

Abstract Questions Plant–plant interactions are key processes that strongly affect the survival, growth and reproduction of individuals in plant communities. In grasslands, the micro‐environment generated under the canopy of shrubs could differentially affect co‐occurring species with different abiotic requirements. In a C 3 /C 4 grassland with scattered shrubs, we asked the following questions: (a) Does the aerial effect, the below‐ground effect, and the net effect of shrubs affect the vegetative ...
