Small bowel endoscopy with existing endoscopes is limited by problems of discomfort and the technical difficulty of advancing far into the small-bowel. Our aim has been to develop and test wireless capsule endoscopy. Wireless endoscopes, in the form of capsules (11 x 33 mm), were constructed by Given Imaging. These were powered by silver oxide batteries and each contained a CMOS imaging chip and miniature processor, white light emitting diodes (LEDs), a short focal length lens, and a miniature transmitter ...

The discomfort of internal gastrointestinal examination may soon be a thing of the past. We have developed a new type of endoscopy, which for the first time allows painless endoscopic imaging of the whole of the small bowel. This procedure involves a wireless capsule endoscope and we describe here its successful testing in humans.

Gavriel J. Iddan, C. Paul Swain,

In 1981 I went on sabbatical from Rafael Ltd. in Israel where I specialized in electro-optics and went to work for Elscint Ltd. in Boston, developing special X-ray tubes and ultrasonic probes. During my stay in Boston I befriended my neighbor, Prof. Eitan Scapa, an Israeli gastroenterologist, also on sabbatical, who was working in one of the hospitals in the Boston area. During our many meetings, we discussed our respective fields and in this way I learned first hand about fiber optic endoscopes ...

At 3DV Systems Ltd. we developed and built a true 3D video camera (Zcam), capable of producing RGB and D signals where D stands for distance or depth to each pixel. The new RGBD camera makes it possible to do away with color based background substitution known as chroma-key as well as creating a whole gallery of new effects and applications such as multilayer foreground as well as background substitutions and manipulations. The new multilayerd modality makes possible the production of mixed reality ...

Gavriel J. Iddan,

Contemporary inventors and investors are faced with new challenges and difficulties that have not been experienced by past generations of inventors. This basically is the result of the exponential increase in the amount of knowledge and the tough global competition. A magic formula for success does not exist, but following some basic rules to be discussed here, will greatly increase the inventor / entrepreneur's chance for success. Two examples, the Video capsule and a 3D imaging Camera that are based ...

Heat and mass transfer rates are computed for condensation on the surface of a liquid flowing in an open channel. The flow is laminar and two dimensional. Surface resistance to condensation is not neglected. Non-condensible gas is present and a weak suction along the channel is applied to reduce its concentration. An integral method is used for the computation. Some typical numerical results are presented, as illustrations. These results are then related to the overall optimization of the desalination ...
