Dysphagia occurs commonly in the intensive care unit (ICU). Despite the clinical relevance, there is little worldwide research on prevention, assessment, evaluation, and/or treatment of dysphagia for ICU patients. We aimed to gain insight into this international knowledge gap. We conducted a multi-center, international online cross-sectional survey of adult ICUs. Local survey distribution champions were recruited through professional and personal networks. The survey was administered from November ...

Abstract Identities ascribed to research staff in face‐to‐face encounters with participants have been raised as key ethical challenge in transnational health research. ‘Misattributed’ identities that do not just deviate from researchers' self‐image, but obscure unequivocal aspects of researcher identity – e.g. that they are researchers – are a case of such ethical problem. Yet, the reasonable expectation of unconcealed identity can conflict with another ethical premise: confidentiality; this poses challenges ...

Human mesenchymal stromal/stem cells (MSC) isolated from fetal tissues hold promise for use in tissue engineering applications and cell-based therapies, but their collection is restricted ethically and technically. In contrast, the placenta is a potential source of readily-obtainable stem cells throughout pregnancy. In fetal tissues, early gestational stem cells are known to have advantageous characteristics over neonatal and adult stem cells. Accordingly, we investigated whether early fetal placental ...

Abstract Stem cells have considerable potential to repair damaged organs and tissues. We previously showed that prenatal transplantation of human first trimester fetal blood mesenchymal stem cells (hfMSCs) in a mouse model of osteogenesis imperfecta (oim mice) led to a phenotypic improvement, with a marked decrease in fracture rate. Donor cells differentiated into mature osteoblasts, producing bone proteins and minerals, including collagen type Iα2, which is absent in nontransplanted mice. This led ...

Maggot-therapy is the application of disinfected fly larvae to chronic wounds to debride the wound bed of necrotic tissue, reduce bacterial contamination and enhance the formation of healthy granulation tissue. Interest in the use of maggot-therapy in human medicine is growing as a result of the prevalence of antibiotic resistant bacteria. Maggot therapy, however, is used relatively little in veterinary medicine. Nevertheless, concern over antibiotic resistance and the increase in demand for organic ...
