Prior experience with the elevated plus maze (EPM) increases the avoidance of rodents to the open arms and impairs the anxiolytic-like effects of benzodiazepines on the traditional behaviors evaluated upon re-exposure to the maze, a phenomenon known as one-trial tolerance. Risk assessment behaviors are also sensitive to benzodiazepines. During re-exposure to the maze, these behaviors reinstate the information-processing initiated during the first experience, and the detection of danger generates ...

Most diabetic patients describe moderate to severe pain symptoms whose pharmacological treatment is palliative and poorly effective. Cannabidiol (CBD) has shown promising results in painful conditions. Then, we aimed to investigate the potential antinociceptive effect of CBD over the mechanical allodynia in streptozotocin-induced diabetic (DBT) rats, as well as its involved mechanisms. Wistar adult male diabetic rats were treated acutely or sub-chronically (for 14 days) with CBD (0.1, 0.3 or 3 mg/kg, ...

It is unclear whether all animal models of anxiety-like states developed using males are appropriate for use in females. In females, tests involving a learning component might be influenced not only by estrous cycle stage on the test day but also by the stage during the conditioning process. We used two tests - conditioned freezing (CF) and fear potentiated startle (FPS) to compare responsiveness of male rats and females conditioned and/or tested in proestrus (P) or late diestrus (LD). For CF all rats ...

Abstract Introduction/ objectives Assuming that there is a link between lipid and glucose metabolism and inflammation in patients with psoriatic arthritis (PsA), our aim was to evaluate the relationships among body composition measurements, food intake, and disease activity in patients with PsA. Methods A total of 97 patients with PsA, according to the CASPAR criteria, were included in this cross-sectional study. Body composition measurements (whole-body DXA, GE-Lunar), food intake (3-day registry) ...

A single threatening experience may change the behavior of an animal in a long-lasting way and elicit generalized behavioral responses to a novel threatening situation that is unrelated to the original aversive experience. Electrical stimulation (ES) of the dorsal periaqueductal gray (dPAG) produces a range of defensive reactions, characterized by freezing, escape, and post-stimulation freezing (PSF). The latter reflects the processing of ascending aversive information to prosencephalic structures, ...

The burden of arboviruses in the Americas is high and may result in long-term sequelae with infants disabled by Zika virus infection (ZIKV) and arthritis caused by infection with Chikungunya virus (CHIKV). We aimed to identify environmental drivers of arbovirus epidemics to predict where the next epidemics will occur and prioritize municipalities for vector control and eventual vaccination. We screened sera and urine samples (n = 10,459) from residents of 48 municipalities in the state of Rio de Janeiro ...

Rationale: Cannabidiol (CBD), the major non-psychoactive constituent of cannabis, has therapeutic potential for the treatment of anxiety. Economic inequality is associated with preferences for smaller, immediate gains over larger, delayed ones. Such temporal discounting may feed into rising global inequality, yet it is unclear whether it is a function of choice preferences or norms, or rather the absence of sufficient resources for immediate needs. It is also not clear whether these reflect true differences in choice patterns between income groups. We tested temporal discounting and five intertemporal choice anomalies using local ...

This study investigated the antinociceptive potential of cannabidiol (CBD) in male and female Wistar rats. The assessment and analysis included tail withdrawal to thermal stimulation (tail flick test) and mechanical allodynia induced by plantar incision injury (von Frey test). CBD reduced acute thermal sensitivity in uninjured animals and post-operative mechanical allodynia in males and females. In the tail flick test, CBD 30 mg/kg i.p. was required to induce antinociception in males. During the proestrus ...

Interleukin-27, a cytokine of the IL-12 family, is secreted by antigen-presenting cells such as macrophages and dendritic cells (DCs). Recent studies suggest an anti-inflammatory role for IL-27 by inducing IL-10 producing Tr1 cells capable of inhibiting Th1 and Th17 type responses. Our study aimed to investigate the involvement of IL-27 and Tr1 cells in the immunomodulation of paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM), the most prevalent systemic mycosis in Brazil. The presence of IL-27 was evaluated in serum ...

This paper studies the harmonic distortion (or non-linearity) of vertically stacked SOI nanosheets with different fin widths and channel lengths. The total harmonic distortion and third order harmonic distortion are used as figures of merit in this work. The four approaches applied verifies the correlation between the harmonic distortions and the variety of transistor’s dimensions available for analysis.
