Geoff Royston, Jeannine Hurst, Edward Graham Lister, Patrick A. Stewart,

Modelling the use of health services by local populations can inform the allocation of central resources to larger regions. At aggregate, e.g. regional, level, use is largely driven by supply and such analysis can be misleading. At small area level, however, populations effectively compete for services and their different relative use of services, after allowing for varying availability, reflects variations in their relative need. Empirical quantitative estimates can thus be made of the net relation ...

The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) geometric distortions when using MRI for target delineation and planning for whole‐breast, intensity‐modulated radiotherapy (IMRT). Residual system distortions and combined systematic and patient‐induced distortions are considered. This retrospective study investigated 18 patients who underwent whole‐breast external beam radiotherapy, where both CT and MRIs were acquired for treatment planning. Distortion phantoms ...

The wMelPop strain of Wolbachia is currently being investigated for its potential use as a biological control agent to reduce the ability of Aedes aegypti (L.) mosquitoes to transmit dengue viruses. The survival of a potential wMelPop infected Ae. aegypti strain for field release is important as a higher susceptibility to predation in the wMelPop strain could result in difficulties in achieving fixation. We investigated immature and adult survival as a function of susceptibility to predation by six ...

Abstract During the Oxfordian to Early Kimmeridgian much of the Fladen Ground Spur was a positive feature and sourced clastic deposition in the Piper Basin, Witch Ground and South Viking grabens. The eudoxus flooding event introduced shallow marine conditions onto the Fladen Ground Spur, and during the continuing transgression, a veneer of clastic sediments was deposited. Three facies units are defined: facies 1 — thin, low-high-energy glauconitic sandstone; facies 2 — medium-high-energy clean, well- ...

Abstract Chemical analyses were combined with a biological assay to investigate the main estrogenic chemicals as they passed through a sewage treatment works (STW) and entered a river. The STW studied was unusual in that it received wastewater from the textile trade. This wastewater was shown to contain high concentrations of alkylphenol polyethoxylates and their degradation products, such as nonylphenol. High‐performance liquid chromatography fractionation, combined with biological assay, showed ...

Abstract A major eruption sequence of Ruapehu volcano began on 17 September 1995, with only hours of local precursory seismicity. However, from about 10 to 5 months prior to the eruption, an unusually high number of tectonic earthquakes occurred between 15 and 20 km west of Ruapehu. Diffusion chronometry of zoned crystals within erupted scoria from the 1995 eruptions of Ruapehu provide a petrological timescale of magmatic processes before the eruption. This timescale coincides with the seismicity ...

Abstract As a result of the introduction of tighter discharge limits and effluent treatment processes at source, the concentration of alkylphenol ethoxylates and nonylphenol present in the final effluent discharge from a sewage treatment works that treats trade effluent from the textiles industry was reduced. The estrogenic effects of the final effluent discharge to the Aire River were compared over a four‐year period during which various treatment measures were introduced. Male rainbow trout exposed ...
