Geoffrey Ingram Taylor, D. H. Michael,

It is suggested in this paper that axisymmetric holes in thin sheets of fluid in which surface tension forces predominate will open out if they are initially large in relation to the thickness of the sheet; but that small holes will close up. No exact criterion has been found for the critical hole size in a free falling sheet, but the behaviour of the sheet may be closely simulated by the suspension of a soap film between coaxial circular rings. Theoretical results and experimental observations ...

Dispersion of a non-uniform slug in time variable fully developed laminar flow is studied by an exact method which in principle is valid for all values of time. A generalized dispersion model, which involves an infinite set of time-dependent coefficients K i ( T ), arises naturally as a consequence of the analysis. Expressions are obtained from first principles for the convective coefficient K 1 ( T ), the apparent diffusion coefficient K 2 ( T ), and the rest of the coefficients K i ( T ). The convective coefficient ...

Geoffrey Ingram Taylor,

The instability which I propose to discuss is well-known in the form it assumes when a very viscous fluid like thick oil or honey falls in a stream onto a plate. A short distance above the plate the stream begins to wave or rotate in spiral form. It is possible to calculate the diameter at points in a steady falling stream of viscous fluid, and it is found that it thickens up very rapidly a short distance above the plate which stops the motion. The reason for the instability is clear. If the stream ...

Geoffrey Ingram Taylor,

Fine jets of slightly conducting viscous fluids and thicker jets or drops of less viscous ones can be drawn from conducting tubes by electric forces. As the potential of the tube relative to a neighbouring plate rises, viscous fluids become nearly conical and fine jets come from the vertices. The potentials at which these jets or drops first appear was measured and compared with calculations. The stability of viscous jets depends on the geometry of the electrodes. Jets as small as 20 μm in diameter ...

Geoffrey Ingram Taylor,

To discuss the coalescence of two neighbouring drops at different electric potentials as a problem of stability it is necessary to assume that they are held on fixed supports, for otherwise there is no equilibrium state to become unstable. In this work these supports are two equal rings. Experiments at first using soap films instead of drops, are in agreement with the analysis when the geometry of the rings conforms to the requirements of the theory. When the distance between the drops is small ...

A. D. McEwan, Geoffrey Ingram Taylor,

The peeling of a flexible strip from a rigid surface to which it is attached by a thin layer of adhesive is discussed, treating the adhesive as a Newtonian viscous fluid. This makes it possible to examine the flow and stress distributions ahead of the point where separation occurs. The conditions at this point are taken to be the same as those observed in other cases where a stream of viscous fluid separates into two. In particular, the effect of surface tension at the separating meniscus on the ...

Geoffrey Ingram Taylor,

The elongation of a drop of one dielectric fluid in another owing to the imposition of an electric field has previously been studied assuming that the interface is uncharged and the fluids at rest. For a steady field this is unrealistic, because however small the conductivity of either fluid the charge associated with steady currents must accumulate at the interface till the steady state is established. It is shown that equilibrium can only be established in a drop when circulations are set up both ...

Geoffrey Ingram Taylor,

The bursting of drops by forces applied over their surface has been the subject of many experimental researches and slight deviations from the spherical form have been investigated by linearised equations. In two cases experiments have shown that in the final stage the drop appears to develop conical ends, but no rational description of this phase of the disruptive process seems to have been published. These two cases are (I) when the drop is torn apart by an electric field and (II) when a drop of ...

Geoffrey Ingram Taylor,

The dynamics of the region where a jet, striking a plane surface obliquely, is transformed into a thin sheet will be discussed. The maximum (stagnation) pressure is the same for all angles of incidence but the area over which the high pressure acts is much reduced as the angle of incidence, 0 , becomes small. The main transformation from a jet to a sheet is due to a pressure of order sin 2 0 x the jet cross section. The pressure is due to the destruction of the component of velocity normal to the impact ...
