Abstract This paper examines a raw milk seizure in Athens, Georgia, USA, and its aftermath as a moment of contention over the contours of biological citizenship. Conflicts around the sale of raw milk are flashpoints in a biopolitical struggle over who decides what constitutes health or disease in the food system. Drawing on Rose’s (2006) framework, the paper illuminates how discourses of life, health and disease are used by the state in expressions of biological citizenship ‘from above’, and interpreted ...

Recent 'anti-essentialist' views in anthropology hold that socio-cultural phenomena have been studied with an exaggerated emphasis on patterns and order and cultural uniformity, thereby obscuring diversity, flux and variability (Vayda 1990).Such views have influenced a number of contemporary anthropological studies which duly emphasize dynamic cultural creativity on the local level (e.g.Borofsky 1987;Barth 1987).Indeed, some commentators see variation itself, and not order or degrees of normative consensus, ...

Stable carbon isotope compositions were analyzed for estuarine fauna collected in tidal creeks draining salt marshes dominated by either Spartina alterniflora Loisel. (δ13C of −12.5%.) or Juncus roemerianus Scheele (δ13C of −26%.). Mean δ13C values of subtidal invertebrates and fishes were −17.8%. and −17.5%. in the Spartina creek and −20.1%. and −20.0%. respectively in the two Juncus creeks. The intermediate δ13C values of the fauna implied an alternate carbon input to the food web, most probably benthic ...

The AMBUR (Analyzing Moving Boundaries Using R) package for the R software environment provides a collection of functions for assisting with analyzing and visualizing historical shoreline change. The package allows import and export of geospatial data in ESRI shapefile format, which is compatible with most commercial and open-source GIS software. The "baseline and transect" method is the primary technique used to quantify distances and rates of shoreline movement, and to detect classification changes ...

Significance Wetland environments are increasingly threatened by climate change, population expansion, resource extraction, forest clearance, and pollution. The Ramsar Convention aims to monitor internationally important wetlands to ensure their ongoing maintenance and survival through wise use and management. However, many wetlands have undergone substantial human-induced changes prior to being listed with Ramsar. In the case of Lake Kutubu, a Ramsar wetland situated in the tropical rainforests ...

A variety of types of distance learning have been used in geoscience education in Georgia. One of them, the Georgia Geoscience Online project, is a model technology-supported Physical and Historical Geology course sequence, which uses a combination of technologies including Web-based course notes, course delivery over the Georgia Statewide Academic and Medical System (GSAMS) two-way interactive video system, and communication via e-mail. Online geoscience courses are being developed to serve the ...

Modern analytical methods, particularly geographic information system (GIS) analyses, provide more accurate estimates of shoreline change than previous research studies because of limitations in older methods and equipment. Topographic survey sheets (T-sheets) are the best, and often the only, source of historical shoreline data for many areas, which, although containing controllable errors, can be profitably analyzed in a GIS framework. After developing protocols for on-screen registration and digitization, ...

The growth in the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) has highlighted the need for regional and national digital geologic maps attributed with age and lithology information. Such maps can be conveniently used to generate derivative maps for purposes including mineral-resource assessment, metallogenic studies, tectonic studies, and environmental research. This Open-File Report is a preliminary version of part of a series of integrated state geologic map databases that cover the entire United ...

The Dynamics of Collaborative Research Relationships:Examples from the Warlpiri Songlines Project Georgia Curran (bio) In November 2005 I arrived in Yuendumu, Central Australia, where I planned to live for the following fifteen months to undertake PhD field-work connected to an Australian Research Council–funded linkage project titled Warlpiri Songlines: Indigenous, Linguistic and Anthropological Perspectives. Within a few short months, I formed relationships with two Warlpiri people, a husband and ...

Abstract Indigenous worlds are and always have been sites of more‐than‐human (MTH) agency and relationship, despite their largely marginalised status within geographic scholarship to date. The return to cosmologically‐informed earth‐oriented Indigenous Lifeworlds holds transformative power for mobilising collective action toward life‐affirming MTH futures for all. In this commentary, we, as two Indigenous PhD students (Alice, Naxi Chinese and Georgia, Te Whakatōhea Māori), draw on our respective ancestral ...

Providing primary source information literacy instruction is one of the main goals at the American Geographical Society Library (AGSL) on the campus of University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM), where we host visits from classes in a broad range of disciplines each semester. The AGSL's collections have a long history that is the product of colonialism, patriarchy, racism, and other issues. The class visits to the AGSL are an excellent opportunity to highlight the collection and to teach students to ...

AbstractA simple method of exploratory survey is described, in which a light-weight camera is used. This method is particularly useful in mountainous country, and it enables maximum use to be made of small breaks in the weather. The author describes his own experiences as surveyor on the Combined Services Expedition to South Georgia in 1964–65.
