Tuberous sclerosis (TS) is a multi-organ autosomal dominant disorder that is best characterized by neurodevelopmental deficits and the presence of benign tumors. TS pathology is caused by mutations in tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) genes and is associated with insulin resistance, decreased glycogen synthase kinase 3β (GSK3β) activity, activation of the mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1), and subsequent increase in protein synthesis. Here, we show that extracellular signal-regulated kinases ( ...

Histamine induced changes in microvascular permeability to macromolecules were studied in two models, the hamster cheek pouch and the canine forelimb preparation. Fluoresceinlabelled dextran FITC‐dextran. M w =70000 and 150000 was used as tracer of permeability increases. Studies in the hamster showed that morphological changes as indicated by intravital microscopy of FITC‐dextran leakage at postcapillary venules were accompanied by an increased concentration of FITC‐dextran in the superfusion solution ...

The mechanism(s) of the waning of the vasodilation and increase in vascular permeability during prolonged local intraarterial infusions of bradykinin (BK) was investigated in this study. Treatment with phentolamine or saralasin failed to prevent the waning of the vasodilation during the prolonged infusion of BK into forelimbs perfused at constant flow. In contrast, BK produced a sustained vasodilator response after treatment with captopril. Forelimb weight and lymph analysis were used to quantitate ...

Abstract The spatial distribution of the specific absorption rate (SAR) was measured in a full‐scale model of man using implantable electric field probes. The model was exposed in the near‐field of linear and aperture antennas at 350 MHz. Effects of the wave polarization, antenna position and antenna gain on the SAR distribution and the average SAR in the whole‐body and body parts are reported.

Uncovering the population genetic histories of non-model organisms is increasingly possible through advances in next generation sequencing and DNA sampling of museum specimens. This new information can inform conservation of threatened species, particularly those for which historical and contemporary population data are unavailable or challenging to obtain. The critically endangered, nomadic regent honeyeater Anthochaera phrygia was abundant and widespread throughout south-eastern Australia prior ...

The effects of local intra-arterial infusions of serotonin (5 or 25 micrograms base/min) or norepinephrine (1 or 5 micrograms base/min) on cutaneous (skin) and skeletal muscle vasculatures were investigated in canine forelimbs perfused at constant flow in dogs anesthetized with pentobarbital. Norepinephrine produced dose-related constriction of the skin and skeletal muscle vasculatures. In the cutaneous vascular circuit, norepinephrine produced large artery, small vessel, and large vein constriction. ...

The suffused, noneverted cheek pouch of ovalbumin (OA)-immunized hamsters was employed to study changes in vascular permeability utilizing intravital light microscopy and direct measurements of plasma to suffusate tracer efflux. Suffusion of the cheek pouches of immunized animals with OA for 10 min stimulated the formation of focal venular fluorescein isothiocyanate dextran (FITC-D, 70,000 Da) leakage sites and produced increases in the plasma to suffusate FITC-D efflux resulting in marked increases ...

A computer-controlled scanning system and an implantable triaxial electric-field probe have been used to obtain maps of the specific absorption rate (SAR) in various cross sections of a full-scale model of man. The model was exposed to a 350-MHz plane wave that provided various orientations of the electric-field vector with respect to the body. The results obtained are in general agreement with previously published theoretical and experimental data. The SAR distributions in the torso and head were ...

Abstract Background Three months after the first reported cases, COVID-19 had spread to nearly 90% of World Health Organization (WHO) member states and only 24 countries had not reported cases as of 30 March 2020. This analysis aimed to 1) assess characteristics, capability to detect and monitor COVID-19, and disease control measures in these 24 countries, 2) understand potential factors for the reported delayed COVID-19 introduction, and 3) identify gaps and opportunities for outbreak preparedness, ...

Selective androgen receptor modulators (SARMs) are androgen receptor (AR) ligands that induce anabolism while having reduced effects in reproductive tissues. In various experimental contexts SARMs fully activate, partially activate, or even antagonize the AR, but how these complex activities translate into tissue selectivity is not known. Here, we probed receptor function using >1000 synthetic AR ligands. These compounds produced a spectrum of activities in each assay ranging from 0 to 100% of maximal ...

Sixty-minute local intraarterial infusions of bradykinin (0.8, 5, or 10 μg base/min) produced transient forelimb vasodilation and dose-related increases in lymph flow, lymph total protein concentration, total protein transport, and weight in forelimbs perfused at a controlled flow rate. Mean aortic pressure was not affected by these infusion rates of bradykinin. Following pretreatment with captopril, the local intraarterial infusion of these same doses of bradykinin produced sustained systemic hypotension. ...

To establish the reproducibility of a well-defined long-term neuronal differentiation protocol, we repeated the cellular and molecular comparison of the same two iPSC lines across five distinct laboratories. OBJECTIVE: Zika virus infection during pregnancy is a cause of microcephaly and other fetal brain abnormalities. Reports indicate that the duration of detectable viral RNA in serum after symptom onset is brief. In a recent case report involving a severely affected fetus, Zika virus RNA was detected in maternal serum 10 weeks after symptom onset, longer than the duration of RNA detection in serum previously reported. This report summarizes the clinical and laboratory characteristics of pregnant women ...

Humans settled the Caribbean about 6,000 years ago, and ceramic use and intensified agriculture mark a shift from the Archaic to the Ceramic Age at around 2,500 years ago1–3. East African genetics and pastoralism The origin and spread of domestic animals across the globe also affected the underlying genetic composition of human populations. In Africa, however, it has been difficult to identify the impact of interactions among migrating food producers and local hunter-gatherers. Prendergast et al. wanted to discern the timing and movement of husbandry and pastoralism and its effects on foraging communities in Africa. They sequenced 41 ancient eastern African human genomes ...

Present-day people from England and Wales have more ancestry derived from early European farmers (EEF) than did people of the Early Bronze Age1. To understand this, here we generated genome-wide data from 793 individuals, increasing data from the Middle to the Late Bronze Age and Iron Age in Britain by 12-fold, and western and central Europe by 3.5-fold. Between 1000 and 875 BC, EEF ancestry increased in southern Britain (England and Wales) but not northern Britain (Scotland) due to incorporation of ...

Two replications using 1945 subjects and a total of 12 messages confirm this finding but provide a smaller estimate (r = .093 for this investigation while O'Keefe reports an average correlation of .352).
