Enterococci isolated from different body sites were tested for high-level gentamicin resistance. A total of 259 enterococcal isolates were screened for resistance (MIC, greater than 2,000 micrograms/ml) by a broth-tube method. Thirty-nine (15.1%) were found to exhibit resistance and were confirmed by agar screening (1,000 micrograms/ml) and agar dilution MIC determinations. The majority of isolates also showed high-level resistance to kanamycin and streptomycin. The remaining isolates showed high-level ...

In vivo experiments on strains of mice that differ in the risk of developing mammary cancer have demonstrated a correlation between the extent of 16α-hydroxylation of estradiol and incidence of mammary cancer. The ability of human mammary terminal duct lobular unit (TDLU), the site of neoplastic transformation, to metabolize estradiol or to accumulate estradiol metabolites has not been unequivocally established. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to examine the outcomes of pregnancies in which echogenic bowel was detected in the second trimester. STUDY DESIGN: Twenty-two cases with a prospective diagnosis of echogenic bowel were reviewed. Karyotypic studies were performed in 19 cases, and 17 families had deoxyribonucleic acid-based risk assessment for cystic fibrosis. The echogenicity of the bowel was retrospectively reviewed and graded as mild or bright. RESULTS: Five cases of trisomy 21 and one case of trisomy ...

Approximately 90,000 inmates are admitted annually to the New York City jail system, many of whom require a high level of medical or mental health services. According to our analysis of deaths in custody from 2001 to 2009, crude death rates have dropped significantly despite the increasing age of the population. Falling HIV-related mortality appears to contribute to this change. Other observations include low rates of suicide across all 9 years and increasing age of the population in recent years.
