Reliable biomarkers of cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), or progression of chronic liver diseases are missing. In this context, Golgi protein-73 (GP73) also called Golgi phosphoprotein-2, was originally defined as a resident Golgi type II transmembrane protein expressed in epithelial cells. As a result, GP73 expression was found primarily in biliary epithelial cells, with only slight detection in hepatocytes. However, in patients with acute or chronic liver diseases and especially in HCC, ...

The excimer fluorescence of the adduct of N-(1-pyrene)maleimide (PMI) with the Ca2+-ATPase was proposed as a probe of ATPase-ATPase interactions in sarcoplasmic reticulum (Lüdi and Hasselbach, Eur. J. Biochem., 1983, 130:5-8). We tested this proposition by analyzing the spectral properties and stoichiometry of the adducts of pyrenemaleimide with sarcoplasmic reticulum and with dithiothreitol and by comparing the effects of various detergents on the excimer fluorescence of the two adducts, with their ...

ContextThe extent to which patients take chronic pain medications as prescribed is not well studied, and there are no generally agreed-upon measures. The Quantitative Analgesic Questionnaire (QAQ) is a new instrument designed to comprehensively document patient-reported medication use, generate scores to quantify it (by individual drug, class, and/or overall), and compare it (qualitatively and/or quantitatively) to the regimen as prescribed.ObjectivesThe aim of this study was to describe the development ...

Environmental carcinogen exposures contribute to the development of oral cancer and improved test systems for the analysis of such carcinogens are needed. We have previously isolated and characterized an epithelial cell line from the tongue of a BigBlue rat. Now, we have established an immortalized fibroblast cell line from the same organ. We exposed these cells to 4-nitroquinoline-1-oxide (NQO), a well-known experimental oral carcinogen in the rat and other species, and measured its cytotoxic and ...

BackgroundAcetabular fractures in the elderly frequently involve segmental quadrilateral plate injury, yet no consensus exists on how to best control the femoral head medial displacement. Quadrilateral surface plates (QSP) were developed to help buttress these challenging fractures. The study aims to 1) Determine the prevalence of segmental quadrilateral plate fractures (SQPF) in elderly patients; and 2) Assess if utilization of a QSP is associated with improved acetabulum fracture reduction and outcome. ...

Pion and photon production cross sections are analyzed in proton-nucleus collisions at energies $20 \mathrm{GeV}\mathrm{}\ensuremath{\lesssim}\sqrt{s}\ensuremath{\lesssim}60$ GeV using a phenomenological description for the proton-proton collision. We separate the proton-proton and nuclear contributions to transverse-momentum broadening and suggest a new mechanism for the nuclear enhancement at high ${p}_{T}.$

Outcome of total hip arthroplasty (THA) for femoral neck fractures (FNF) has been associated with higher complication rates. However, THA for FNF is not always performed by arthroplasty surgeons. This study aimed to compare THA outcomes for FNF to osteoarthritis (OA). In doing so, we described contemporary THA failure modes for FNF performed by arthroplasty surgeons. This was a retrospective, multisurgeon study from an academic center. Of FNFs treated between 2010 and 2020, 177 received THA by an arthroplasty ...

Current national guidelines on caring for hip fractures recommend early mobilization. However, this recommendation does not account for time spent immobilized waiting for surgery. We sought to determine timing of mobilization following hip fracture, beginning at hospital admission, and evaluate its association with medical complications and length of hospital stay (LOS).We performed a retrospective review of prospectively collected data for 470 consecutive patients who underwent surgery for a hip ...

Fragility fractures (FFs) are low-energy trauma fractures that occur at or below standing height. Among FFs, hip fractures are associated with the greatest morbidity, mortality and cost to Canadian health care systems. This review highlights the current state of medical care for hip fractures in Canada, with specific focus on the role of the multidisciplinary team. Gaps in care exist, as FFs represent a unique challenge requiring both acute and chronic management. Furthermore, there is a lack of ...
