Objectives Very-low-birthweight (VLBW) delivery accounts for the majority of neonatal mortality and the black–white disparity in infant mortality. The risk of recurrent VLBW is highest for African-Americans of lower socioeconomic status. This study explores whether the provision of primary health care and social support following a VLBW delivery improves subsequent child spacing and pregnancy outcomes for low-income, African-American women. Methods This pilot study of mixed prospective-retrospective ...

The skeletal complications of type 1 diabetes (T1D) include low bone density, poor bone quality and fractures. Greater calcium intake, vitamin D intake, and physical activity are commonly recommended to improve bone health in patients with T1D. However, it is not clear whether these factors are affected by T1D or improve clinical outcomes. The objective of this study was to systematically review the literature for evidence of associations between calcium intake, vitamin D intake, and physical activity ...

In a 2 x 2 factorial design, moderately intoxicated (BAC = .05) college students (n = 40) were exposed to a cognitive set (to concentrate) and/or an auditory feedback signal while performing a modified pursuit-rotor task across five postbeverage trials. Self-reported "highness" was also assessed. A control group received placebo drinks and performed without aids. Hypothesized main effects for both set and signal revealed that intoxicated aided subjects outperformed their unaided counterparts. Moreover, subjects ...

Abstract Anomalous ulnar innervation of intrinsic hand muscles, inferred in a number of clinical series, has been documented only rarely in electrophysiological studies. Using near‐nerve and standard conduction studies we evaluated 2 cases with nearly exclusive ulnar innervation of hand muscles. There was no evidence of anomalous communication in the forearm. Digital sensory fibers were normally distributed in median and ulnar nerves. The anomalous motor innervation most likely results from palmar ...

Objective Food cravings are thought to be the result of conditioning or pairing hunger with consumption of certain foods. Methods In a 2‐year weight loss trial, subjects were randomized to one of four diets that varied in macronutrient content. The Food Craving Inventory (FCI) was used to measure cravings at baseline and at 6 and 24 months. Food intake was also measured at those time points. To measure free‐living consumption of food items measured in the FCI, items on the FCI were matched to the ...

There was been little or no direct inquiry into the feasibility of nonbiological processes for attenuating alcohol effects. In an initial study, we found that an instructional set (to concentrate) presented at each trial facilitated visual-motor performance among moderately intoxicated subjects. We extended this work in the present study by varying density of the Set presentation across trials, by varying Set onset and offset, and by assessing self-reported concentration levels. After dosing, subjects ...
