This paper looks at the effect of fineness of the different components in a blend containing 55% Portland cement, 30% calcined clay and 15% limestone. The calcined clay originates from a natural deposit in Cuba and contains less than 50% kaolinite. The particle size distribution (PSD) of each of the three components was varied by using different grinding times, and the consequences on heat release, strength development, pore structure and phase assemblage development were investigated up to 28 d. ...

Interventions From June to September 2002, consecutive patients undergoing open or laparoscopic surgery (electively or on an emergent basis) for colorectal cancers or diverticular disease were prospectively included. Exclusion criteria were colectomy for other causes (eg, inflammatory bowel diseases, benign polyps). The structured sheet of data ...

The authors investigated whether PCSK9 inhibition could represent a therapeutic strategy in calcific aortic valve stenosis (CAVS). A meta-analysis of 10 studies was performed to determine the impact of the PCSK9 R46L variant on CAVS, and the authors found that CAVS was less prevalent in carriers of this variant (odds ratio: 0.80 [95% confidence interval: 0.70 to 0.91]; p = 0.0011) compared with noncarriers. PCSK9 expression was higher in the aortic valves of patients CAVS compared with control patients. ...

Clinically node negative HNSCC patients have a risk ranging between 18 and 45% of occult metastases, making prophylactic irradiation mandatory. Selective irradiation of nodal target volume based on international guidelines is practice. Anyway, about half the tumours lying in an anatomical subsite known to potentially drain bilaterally effectively do so, leading to unnecessary large volume irradiation. Moreover, 15% of the tumours show drainage outside of predicted basin, increasing the risk for ...

Pontoscolex corethurus (Müller, 1857) is the most common invasive earthworm in disturbed lands in the tropics. Conditions required for its successful colonization of new plots are still not understood since some areas can be invaded while others, sometimes in the vicinity, are not. We kept newly hatched P. corethrurus in a wide range of Amazonian soils where population densities had been previously evaluated. We identified soil conditions that best sustain survival, soil ingestion and growth of P. ...

This paper investigates on the theorization, design, fabrication and measurement of original phase shifter (PS) operating with two-step stair phase behavior. The innovative stair PS is designed with unfamiliar stop-band (SB) negative group delay (NGD) passive circuit. The elementary unfamiliar SB-NGD topology constituted by resistive, inductive, and capacitive lumped network is described. Acting as an RF and microwave circuit, the S-matrix model is expressed in function the RLC-network parameters. ...

Reduction of energy consumption in the building sector has been identified as a major instrument to tackle global climate change and improve sustainability. In this paper, we propose a methodology to address a retrofit planning problem at a community level, with a building resolution. The resulting tool helps local decision-makers identify pertinent actions to improve the environmental behavior of their territories. Two building retrofit levers are considered, namely envelope insulation and heating ...

A stratiform chromite ore body crops out in the lower part of the dunitic mantle-crust transition zone (DTZ) that developed at the top of a mantle diapir in the Maqsad area in the Oman ophiolite. It is made of layers ranging in thickness from a few mm to a maximum of 3 m, and in modal composition from massive to antinodular and disseminated ore. The ore body is about 50 m thick and its lateral extent does not exceed several hundred meters. The layering dips gently to the southeast, parallel to that ...

On Earth, most of the critical processes happen at the frontiers between envelopes and especially at the Moho between the mantle and the crust. Beneath oceanic spreading centers, the dunitic transition zone (DTZ) appears as a major interface between the upwelling and partially molten peridotitic mantle and the accreting gabbroic lower crust. Better constraints on the processes taking part in the DTZ allows improved understanding of the interactions between silicate melts and hydrated fluids, which ...

The Maqsad area in the Oman ophiolite exposes a >300 m thick dunitic mantle-crust transition zone (DTZ) that developed above a mantle diapir. The Maqsad DTZ is primarily made of "pure" dunites (olivine with scattered chromite and chromite seams) and "impregnated" dunites, which exhibit a significant lithological variability, including various kinds of clinopyroxene-, plagioclase-, orthopyroxene-, amphibole (hornblende/pargasite)-bearing dunites.
