Background On-pump cardiac surgery provokes a predictable perioperative myocardial ischaemia–reperfusion injury which is associated with poor clinical outcomes. We determined the occurrence of time-of-the-day variation in perioperative myocardial injury in patients undergoing aortic valve replacement and its molecular mechanisms. Methods We studied the incidence of major adverse cardiac events in a prospective observational single-centre cohort study of patients with severe aortic stenosis and preserved ...

Correction of the virus-induced deficits in innate immunity of HIVinfected subjects could well contribute to enhanced immune recovery and efficacious control of viral replication. The safe synthetic immunomodulator Murabutide (ISTAC Biotechnology, Lille, France) has been found to regulate the function of antigenpresenting cells and to selectively activate CD4 lymphocytes leading to dramatic suppression of HIV replication, in vitro. Therefore, as a first step toward the evaluation of the immunotherapeutic ...

This paper presents a descriptive study of nasals and nasal harmony in Ikwere, an Igboid language of Nigeria. In the variety studied here, nasality is surface-contrastive in vowels but not in consonants. Nasality has the status of a morpheme-level feature which is either present or absent in each morpheme (root or affix). If present, it is predictably distributed across nonobstruent sounds by a system of nasal harmony which operates within the domain of the simple word, spreading nasality bidirectionally ...

This article reviews the theoretical and methodological status of the traditional distinction between denotational ambiguity and vagueness, concluding that it is valid and necessary to use it in modeling natural lexical representation. The definitional criterion is argued to be unreliable, but the equivocality that linguistic and logical criteria appear to exhibit does not challenge the basis of the distinction. Rather, it is argued, their use must be qualified, and in particular confined to denotational ...

II The Invariance Hypothesis: is abstract reason based on image-schemas? GEORGE LAKOFF‘ Abstract I view cognitive linguistics as defined by the commitment to characterize the full range of linguistic generalizations while being faithful to empirical discoveries about the nature of the mind/brain. The Invariance Hypothesis is a proposed general principle intended to characterize a broad range or regularities in both our conceptual and linguistic systems. Given that all metaphorical mappings are partial, ...

Abstract Purpose Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries often lead to associated injuries of the posterior horn of the lateral meniscus (PHLM). Arthroscopic, assessment of PHLM instability may be difficult in the absence of a visible meniscus damage. The main objective of this prospective multi-center study was to compare the ability of the probing and aspiration tests to identify PHLM instability in a population of patients undergoing ACL reconstruction (ACLR) and a control group of patients with ...

ABSTRACT Macrophages and dendritic cells are known to play an important role in the establishment and persistence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Besides antiretroviral therapy, several immune-based interventions are being evaluated with the aim of achieving better control of virus replication in reservoir cells. Murabutide is a safe synthetic immunomodulator presenting a capacity to enhance nonspecific resistance against viral infections and to target cells of the reticuloendothelial ...

The role of recombinant interleukin-16 (rIL-16) in regulating human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) replication in endogenously infected cells has been investigated. Cultures of CD8 cell-depleted mitogen-activated lymphocytes from 22 of 26 HIV-1-infected subjects presented variable levels of secreted p24 antigen. The presence of rIL-16 throughout the 14-day culture period dramatically inhibited p24 release into the culture supernatants. This effect was found to be mediated through inhibition ...

Nitric oxide (NO) has been implicated in certain immunopathogenetic mechanisms during the course of infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). We have evaluated the levels of NO release and lymphocyte apoptosis in peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) cultures from HIV-1 infected subjects and healthy controls. We have also examined these 2 parameters in parallel cultures maintained under conditions where either NO synthesis was inhibited or high level of NO was present. Nitrite contents ...
