To determine how emotional information modulates subsequent traces for repeated stimuli, we combined simultaneous electro-encephalography (EEG) and magneto-encephalography (MEG) measures during long-lag incidental repetition of fearful, happy, and neutral faces. Repetition effects were modulated by facial expression in three different time windows, starting as early as 40–50 ms in both EEG and MEG, then arising at the time of the N170/M170, and finally between 280–320 ms in MEG only. The very early ...

Abstract Perceived gaze contact in seen faces may convey important social signals. We examined whether gaze perception affects face processing during two tasks: Online gender judgement, and later incidental recognition memory. Individual faces were presented with eyes directed either straight towards the viewer or away, while these faces were seen in either frontal or three-quarters view. Participants were slower to make gender judgements for faces with direct versus averted eye gaze, but this effect ...

Polyethylenimine (PEI) is one of the most efficient nonviral vectors for gene therapy. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of endocytosis in the transfection of synchronized L929 fibroblasts by PEI/DNA complexes. This was performed by confocal microscopy and flow cytometry, using the endocytosis marker FM4-64 and PEI/DNA complexes labeled either with the DNA intercalator YOYO-1, or with fluorescein covalently linked to PEI. Endocytosis appeared as the major if not the sole mode of entry ...

Vuilleumier machines exhibit some attractive features such as electricity independency, ability to operate environmentally friendly and long lifetime. Moreover, they can also operate continuously with low noise, low vibrations, a variety of fuels or biofuels (or no fuel at all at solar systems), at a wide range of temperatures and with inert working gases. Apart from operating as heat pumps, with the appropriate design they can additionally produce work output. At the early years of their development, ...

Tight regulation of signalling activity is crucial for proper tissue patterning and growth. Here we investigate the function of Pentagone (Pent), a secreted protein that acts in a regulatory feedback during establishment and maintenance of BMP/Dpp morphogen signalling during Drosophila wing development. We show that Pent internalises the Dpp co-receptors, the glypicans Dally and Dally-like protein (Dlp), and propose that this internalisation is important in the establishment of a long range Dpp gradient. ...

A 3D CFD simulation has been conducted in order to investigate the thermodynamic and flow characteristics of a Vuilleumier heat pump. Vuilleumier heat pumps are machines with few components which need a heat source of high temperature to operate and in some cases additionally some work input. The simulated machine comprises of one cylinder inside which two displacers reciprocate. The design of the machine resembles two opposing GPU-3 Stirling engines which is an existing engine and it was based ...

Orchestration of spatial organization by signaling gradients - morphogen gradients - is a fundamental principle in animal development. Despite their importance in tissue patterning and growth, the exact mechanisms underlying the establishment and maintenance of morphogen gradients are poorly understood. Our recent work on BMP (bone morphogenetic protein) morphogen signaling during wing development identified a novel protein, Pentagone (Pent), as a critical regulator of morphogen activity. In the following, ...

We studied the relation of serum vitamin A (retinol), beta-carotene, vitamin E, and selenium to the risk of lung cancer, using serum that had been collected during a large blood-collection study performed in Washington County, Maryland, in 1974. Levels of the nutrients in serum samples from 99 persons who were subsequently found to have lung cancer (in 1975 to 1983) were compared with levels in 196 controls who were matched for age, sex, race, month of blood donation, and smoking history. Retrograde Bone Morphogenetic Protein (BMP) signaling in neurons is essential for the differentiation and synaptic function of many neuronal subtypes. BMP signaling regulates these processes via Smad transcription factor activity, yet the scope and nature of Smad-dependent gene regulation in neurons are mostly unknown. Here, we applied a computational approach to predict Smad-binding cis-regulatory BMP-Activating Elements (BMP-AEs) in Drosophila, followed by transgenic in vivo reporter analysis to ...

Levels of retinol, beta-carotene, and alpha-tocopherol were determined in the serum of 415 adults over age 35 years who had volunteered in 1974 to donate blood for cancer research in Washington County, Maryland. Males had higher levels of serum retinol, lower levels of beta-carotene, and only slightly lower levels of alpha-tocopherol than did females. No clear-cut association was noted with age. Smokers had decreased serum levels of beta-carotene. Vitamin supplementation was associated with higher ...

Research over the past decades has demonstrated the explanatory power of emotions, feelings, motivations, moods, and other affective processes when trying to understand and predict how we think and behave. In this consensus article, we ask: has the increasingly recognized impact of affective phenomena ushered in a new era, the era of affectivism?

Abstract Retrograde bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling at the Drosophila neuromuscular junction (NMJ) has served as a paradigm to study TGF-β-dependent synaptic function and maturation. Yet, how retrograde BMP signaling transcriptionally regulates these functions remains unresolved. Here, we uncover a gene network, enriched for neurotransmission-related genes, that is controlled by retrograde BMP signaling in motor neurons through two Smad-binding cis-regulatory motifs, the BMP-activating ( ...
