Abstract Recognizing sounds implicates the cerebral transformation of input waveforms into semantic representations. Although past research identified the superior temporal gyrus (STG) as a crucial cortical region, the computational fingerprint of these cerebral transformations remains poorly characterized. Here, we exploit a model comparison framework and contrasted the ability of acoustic, semantic (continuous and categorical) and sound-to-event deep neural network representation models to predict ...

Abstract Despite the growing interest on the notion of academic engagement (AE) and its relevance for students’ success, a few valid and reliable instruments on AE have been developed. Moreover, most of the available measures consider AE as a student’s trait rather than a relational and situated dynamic process. This study presents the development and validation of a new instrument, the SInAPSi Academic Engagement Scale (SAES), which was developed within a project coordinated by the SInAPSi center ...

Primary progressive multiple sclerosis (PPMS) causes accumulation of neurological disability from disease onset without clinical attacks typical of relapsing multiple sclerosis (RMS). However, whether genetic variation influences the disease course remains unclear. We aimed to determine whether mutations causative of neurological disorders that share features with multiple sclerosis (MS) contribute to risk for developing PPMS.

Summary: Purpose: GABA A receptors from the brain of patients afflicted with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) become less efficient (run‐down) when repetitively activated by GABA. Experiments were designed to investigate whether the antiepileptic drug, levetiracetam (LEV), which is used as an adjunctive treatment for medically intractable MTLE, counteracts the GABA A receptor run‐down. Methods: GABA A receptors were microtransplanted from the brains of patients afflicted with MTLE into Xenopus ...

Nowadays the use of magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) in medical applications has exceeded expectations. In molecular imaging, MNP based on iron oxide coated with appropriated materials have several applications in vitro and in vivo studies. For applications in nanobiotechnology these MNP must present some characteristics such as size smaller than 100 nanometers, high magnetization values, among others. Therefore the MNP have physical and chemical properties that are specific to certain studies which ...

The structural evolution during sintering of compacted SnO2 sol-gel powder was investigated using nitrogen adsorption isotherm analysis. Results show that for sintering temperatures up to 400°C the samples have a fractal pore size distribution. As the sintering temperature increases, a structural rearragement occurs, allowing an increase of the efficiency of particle packing and the reduction of fractality. Above 400°C, the pore size growth associated with grain coalescence is the main structural ...

Avoidance of unnecessary or ineffective treatment should be one of the main goals in adjuvant breast oncology today. Unfortunately, both patients and doctors hunt for tiny statistical differences in survival curves. This search could not only lead to an oncological approach of unlimited addition that we will not be able to afford, but would also end inevitably in indeterminate overtreatment with substantial risks of unexpected toxic effects eating away whatever progress we might make. "Do not harm" ...

The dynamics of a cell suspended in a Newtonian liquid subjected to a pressure-driven flow at non-negligible inertia in cylindrical and square cross section microfluidic channels is studied through three-dimensional arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian finite-element numerical simulations. The cell is modeled through the neo-Hookean hyper-elastic constitutive equation, which can describe biological particles undergoing moderate deformations. The cell-to-channel relative dimension is fixed to 0.2, whereas ...

We present measurements of the magnetic and structural properties of the magnetic semiconductor MnIn2Se4 and Zn1−xMnxIn2Se4(x=0.87). The localized Mn ions in the layered rhombohedral structure undergo a spin-freezing transition below 3.5K. The frequency-dependent freezing temperature Tf varies as ΔTf/(TfΔlogω)≈0.022, indicating spin-glass behavior.

Central nervous system (CNS) delivery of anti-inflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin 4 (IL4), holds promise as treatment for multiple sclerosis (MS). We have previously shown that short-term herpes simplex virus type 1-mediated IL4 gene therapy is able to inhibit experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), an animal model of MS, in mice and non-human primates. Here, we show that a single administration of an IL4-expressing helper-dependent adenoviral vector (HD-Ad) into the cerebrospinal fluid ( ...

Social Networks represent a cornerstone of our daily life, where the so-called social reviewing systems (SRSs) play a key role in our daily lives and are used to access data typically in the form of reviews. Due to their importance, social networks must be trustworthy and secure, so that their shared information can be used by the people without any concerns, and must be protected against possible attacks and misuses. One of the most critical attacks against the reputation system is represented by ...

Current Online Social Networks represent a means for the continuous generation and distribution of information, which is slightly changed when moving from a user to another during the traversing of the network. Such an amount of information can overcome the capacity of a single user to manage it, so it would be useful to reduce it so that the user is able to have a summary of the information flowing the network. To this aim, it is of crucial importance to detect events within such an information ...

The human microbiota is an integral component in the maintenance of health and of the immune system. Microbiome-wide association studies have found numerous diseases associated to dysbiosis. Studies are needed to move beyond correlations and begin to address causation. Autoimmune thyroid diseases (ATD) are one of the most common organ-specific autoimmune disorders with an increasing prevalence, higher than 5% worldwide. Most frequent manifestations of ATD are Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and Graves’ disease. ...

Abstract Archetypal analysis aims at synthesizing single‐valued data sets through a few (not necessarily observed) points that are called archetypes, under the constraint that all points can be represented as a convex combination of the archetypes themselves and that the archetypes are a convex combination of the data. In this paper, we extend this methodology to the case of interval‐valued data, which represent a special case of set‐valued data, where the sets are compact and identified by ordered ...

Ataxia telangiectasia (A-T) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by progressive neurological dysfunction. To date, only supportive care aimed to halt the progressive neurodegeneration is available for the treatment. Recently, an improvement of neurological signs during short-term treatment with betamethasone has been reported. To date, the molecular and biochemical mechanisms by which the steroid produces such effects have not yet been elucidated. Therefore, a review of the literature ...

High mobility group A (HMGA) overexpression plays a critical role in neoplastic transformation. To investigate whether HMGA acts by regulating the expression of microRNAs, we analyzed the microRNA expression profile of human breast adenocarcinoma cells (MCF7) transfected with the HMGA1 gene, which results in a highly malignant phenotype. Among the microRNAs induced by HMGA1, we focused on miR-181b, which was overexpressed in several malignant neoplasias including breast carcinomas. We show that miR- ...

The Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome (SLOS) is an autosomal recessive disorder of cholesterol biosynthesis characterised by facial dysmorphisms, mental retardation and multiple congenital anomalies. SLOS is caused by mutations of the human Δ7-sterol reductase (DHCR7) gene and, so far, 19 different mutations have been described. Among these, mutations impairing the activity of the C-terminus appear to be the most severe. Here we report the mutational analysis of the DHCR7 gene in nine Italian SLOS patients. ...
