In up to 60% of human cancers, p53 gene mutations are responsible for direct inactivation of the tumor suppressor function of p53. Alternative mechanisms of p53 inactivation described thus far mainly affect its posttranslational regulation. In X-linked dyskeratosis congenita, a multisystemic syndrome characterized by increased cancer susceptibility, mutations of the DKC1 gene encoding dyskerin cause a selective defect in the translation of a subgroup of internal ribosome entry site (IRES)-containing ...

The aim of this paper is to evaluate the socio–economic impact of the allocation of royalties from oil extraction on regional development through a case study on the Basilicata region (Italy). We examine how the regional government's chosen policies have impacted the income of Basilicata residents and the economic development of the region and how a different set of choices may reveal a more effective approach to turning revenue into long–term public benefits. The analysis focuses on growth as well ...

The 2030 Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that by 2030 all people enjoy peace and prosperity. The success or failure in their implementation largely depends on the national implementation effort, measured within wide and compound indicator frameworks. Due to such complexity, providing a simple but comprehensive view on the progress to achieve the SDGs is a priority. Moreover, ...

Natura 2000 is a network of habitats, the largest coordinated network of protected areas in the world, managed under the same regulatory framework. Although the main aim of the network is to protect the habitat, it also considers the economic, social and cultural needs of the people involved. Moreover, Natura 2000 is recognised for its provision of several ecosystem services and it has, therefore, put management plans in place for these areas. This paper assessed residents' preferences for provisioning, ...

Avascular necrosis of femoral head (AVN) is 1 of the main factors causing disability in young adults. Hip prosthesis can be considered an effective treatment of the painful symptoms but it is a major surgical intervention for this type of population. Thus, a large space should be left to therapeutic alternatives such as regenerative medicine. This retrospective study evaluates 52 AVN treated by core decompression, bone chips allograft, fibrin platelet-rich plasma (PRF) and concentrated autologous mesenchymal ...

Dealing with spatial decision problems means combining and transforming geographical data (input) into a resultant decision (output), interfacing a Geographical Information System (GIS) with Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) methods. The conventional MCDA approach assumes the spatial homogeneity of alternatives within the case study area, although it is often unrealistic. On the other side, GIS provides excellent data acquisition, storage, manipulation and analysis capabilities, but in the case ...

Abstract This paper proposes a social accounting matrix (SAM)‐based, counterfactual approach to assess the economy‐wide impact of food fraud in a given country and applies it to the Italian economy. The empirical application uses primary data collected by the authority in charge of the monitoring and repression of fraud in food value chains between the years 2007 and 2015. This is a unique dataset to analyze the issue, although it includes only data on food fraud within the country. The results of ...

A Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) Program was introduced as a mandatory measure in the EU in the 1990s. Despite its impact on the food industry, only limited literature addresses the issue of cost and benefits of HACCP at the firm level in Europe. This paper illustrates the results of a pilot study on case studies in Italy, UK and The Netherlands, providing a first assessment of the order of magnitude of costs of compliance and a qualitative illustration of the main benefits perceived ...

The mechanism for generating double minutes chromosomes (dmin) and homogeneously staining regions (hsr) in cancer is still poorly understood. Abstract We analyse the exit behaviour of Tuscan farms during the period 2000–2007 both at the farm and the territorial level. The study combines data from the 2000 National Census of Agriculture and three waves of the ‘Farm Structure Surveys’. The exit probability of the resulting sample, composed of 3,187 farms, is estimated through a Bayesian hierarchical probit model. Our results show that exits reflect the size and type of holdings. Likelihood of exit is higher in areas of higher population ...

Therefore, the chronic outcomes of this injury are most frequently the object of study and treatment. Different techniques for volar plate chronic avulsion repair are described in the literature. Abstract Neocentromeres contribute to cancer progression by mitotically stabilizing acentric chromosomes containing amplified oncogenes. Macchia et al. show that... Genome amplification in the form of rings or giant rod-shaped marker chromosomes (RGMs) is a common genetic alteration in soft tissue tumors. The chemokine receptor CXCR4 plays a fundamental role in homeostasis and pathology by orchestrating recruitment and positioning of immune cells, under the guidance of a CXCL12 gradient. The ability of chemokines to form heterocomplexes, enhancing their function, represents an additional level of regulation on their cognate receptors. In particular, the multi-faceted activity of the heterocomplex formed between CXCL12 and the alarmin HMGB1 is emerging as an unexpected player able to modulate a variety ...

We have obtained a frequency noise level, measured in loop, of 1.9×10−7 Hz/√Hz at 10 Hz for the 1064 nm laser; this value is limited by shot noise. The Allan standard deviation for relative frequency noise is 1.0×10−21 on a 100-ms time scale. The spectral density of the laser frequency noise is negligible in the channel where gravitational waves ought to appear and meets the specifications for the target ...
