Object The goal of this study was to use a modified version of the CO 2 laser—soldering system to develop a simple and reliable technique for the repair of dural defects after excision of brain tumors. Methods The authors used a CO 2 fiber optic laser system that they had developed for heating, monitoring, and controlling tissue temperature in situ and in real time, thereby reducing damage to the brain parenchyma. They adapted the system for dural closure by using free fascial grafts in a porcine ...

Dark matter is one of the greatest mysteries in physics. It interacts via gravity and composes most of our universe, but its elementary composition is unknown. We search for nongravitational interactions of axion-like dark matter with atomic spins using a precision quantum detector. The detector is composed of spin-polarized xenon gas that can coherently interact with a background dark matter field as it traverses through the galactic dark matter halo. Conducting a 5-month-long search, we report ...

Alternative splicing plays a major role in transcriptome diversity and plasticity, but it is largely unknown how tissue-specific and embryogenesis-specific alternative splicing is regulated. The highly conserved splicing factor Slu7 is involved in 3′ splice site selection and also regulates alternative splicing. We show that Slu7 has a unique spatial pattern of expression among human and mouse embryonic and adult tissues. We identified several functional Ets binding sites and GC-boxes in the human ...

Gil Shaham-Maymon, Dan Miodownik,

The ongoing questions that ethno-nationally divided urban communities face concerning human rights are often exacerbated by large-scale events that challenge everyday local dynamics, such as wars and pandemics. This study, situated within discussions concerning the "localization" of human rights, explores what factors lead city-zens (citizens of the city) to pin expectations of safeguarding human rights on the local authority, focusing on urban identity, ethno-national identity, and the city's ethno- ...

Gil Shaham-Maymon,

In recent years, increasing numbers of cities have begun addressing global threats to human rights. By cultivating a local version of citizenship (city-zenship), cities foster a collective ethos shaped around universal principles of freedom, equality, and dignity, declaring themselves human rights cities. However, despite its varied manifestations, this label remains broad, accommodating a range of interpretations. This study distinguishes between two primary models, which I conceptualize as thin ...

Abstract This study explores the prioritization of urban identity over national identity in the context of the global city. Scholars have extensively discussed the fragmentation of national identity among individuals in the globalized world, and the relative proliferation of other communal identities, whether more cosmopolitan or place‐based. As globalization gradually erodes the cultural distinctiveness of nation states, cities are revealed as arenas within which inhabitants nurture a particular ...

The increased risk of coronary heart disease in cigarette smokers may be due at least partly to an elevation of the leucocyte count Chronic passive smoking has also been found to be associated with an increased risk of coronary heart disease, but its effect on the leucocyte count has not been reported. In this study 250 male factory employees aged 20–64 years were interviewed on smoking behaviour and exposure to environmental tobacco smoke, and blood counts were determined. Urinary cotinine was ...
