CD26/DPPIV (dipeptidil peptidase IV) displays an array of diverse functional properties, with a role in the development of several human cancers. This enzyme is found mainly anchored in the membrane of cells although it also has an enzymatically active plasma isoform. The regulation of biological activities of cytokines by DPP IV activity has a potential role in the homeostatic regulation of hematopoiesis. In this study, we analyzed the CD26 antigen cell membrane expression by flow cytometry and ...

Purpose To screen proteins/peptides in urine of Renal Cell Carcinoma (RCC) patients by SELDI-TOF (Surface Enhanced Laser Desorption Ionization - Time of Flight) in search of possible biomarkers. Material and Methods Sixty-one urines samples from Clear Cell RCC and Papillary RCC were compared to 29 samples of control urine on CM10 chip. Mass analysis was performed in a ProteinChip Reader PCS 4,000 (Ciphergen Biosystems, Fremont, CA) with the software Ciphergen Express 3.0. All chips were read at low and ...

BACKGROUND: In the 2014 PROtective Ventilation using HIgh versus LOw positive end-expiratory pressure (PROVHILO) trial, intraoperative low tidal volume ventilation with high positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP = 12 cm H 2 O) and lung recruitment maneuvers did not decrease postoperative pulmonary complications when compared to low PEEP (0–2 cm H 2 O) approach without recruitment breaths. However, effects of intraoperative PEEP on lung compliance remain poorly understood. We hypothesized that higher ...

This study evaluated oral mucosal lesions in liver-transplanted children.A retrospective study was performed on pediatric patients who underwent liver transplantation between 2002 and 2009, at A.C. Camargo Hospital, Sao Paulo-SP. Alterations, such as polypoid lesions over the dorsum of the tongue, lip swelling, angular cheilitis, fissures of the lips, mucosal tags, cobblestone appearance, and fissures of the tongue, were considered as orofacial granulomatosis (OFG)-like lesions. All clinical data ...

Oral symptoms in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients are often unexplored and affect the health-related quality of life. The aims of this study were: (a) to evaluate the oral health condition of SLE patients compared to control subjects without rheumatic diseases; (b) to determine the consequences of oral health condition in the quality of life of these two groups. Individuals with SLE ( n = 75) and without SLE ( n = 78) (control group), paired for gender and age, underwent complete oral examination. ...

Abstract Objectives Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) play a role in the pathogenesis of periodontitis and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, it remains poorly understood whether NETs participate in the cross-talk between periodontitis and RA. Herein, we investigated the production of NETs in individuals with periodontitis and RA and its association with clinical parameters. The impact of periodontal therapy on RA and NET release was also assessed. Methods The concentration of NETs and cytokines ...

Candidemia is a significant cause of bloodstream infections (BSI) in nosocomial settings. The identification of species can potentially improve the quality of care and decrease human mortality. Quantitative PCR (qPCR) was evaluated for Candida albicans detection using culture suspensions containing C. albicans , spiked human blood, the cloned qPCR target fragment (ITS2 region) and the results of these assays were compared. The assays showed a good detection limit: C. albicans DNA extracted from yeast ( ...

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) represents 3% of adult malignancies. About 30% of RCC patients develop metastatic disease. So far, drugs cannot significantly increase the survival of these patients. We present a recent review of proteomics and RCC. Proteomic technologies have been used in the research to discover new markers of RCC that might increase survival. Furthermore, newly discovered markers cannot increase patient survival, rather their prognostic value supporting therapeutic decisions or new ...

Chronic periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory process affecting tooth supporting tissues in the presence of pathogenic bacterial biofilm. There is some evidence for changes in the protein composition of whole saliva from chronic periodontitis patients, but there have been no studies using a proteomic approach. Hence, the aim of this study was to compare the protein profiles of unstimulated whole saliva from patients with periodontitis and healthy subjects by two complementary approaches ( ...

Oral leukoplakia is the most common potentially malignant disorder in the oral cavity and can precede carcinoma. This study aimed to identify possible oral leukoplakia salivary biomarkers. Unstimulated saliva was collected from participants and protein concentration was determined. Proteins were then precipitated with cold acetone and separated using 2DE over a pH range of 3–10. Spot demarcation and matching were performed and protein identification was done through MS analysis. Oral leukoplakia ...

The introduction of non-indigenous species (NIS) is considered as one of the main causes associated with biodiversity loss. The number of NIS has increased significantly emphasizing the need to know and manage the processes of biological invasions. The main objectives of this work were to assess the distribution patterns of the fouling communities within recreational marinas ...

Cirrhosis is usually a late-onset and life-threatening disease characterized by fibrotic scarring and inflammation that disrupts liver architecture and function. While it is typically the result of alcoholism or hepatitis viral infection in adults, its etiology in infants is much less understood. In this study, we report 14 children from ten unrelated families presenting with a syndromic form of pediatric liver cirrhosis. By genome/exome sequencing, we found recessive variants in FOCAD segregating ...

The aim of this study was to evaluate the differentially secreted protein profile in the urine from patients with clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) using mass spectrometry–based methods. Urine composition can reflect kidney physiology and can be used to detect markers for renal diseases. Moreover, characterization of the secretome is likely to assist in the investigation of new drugs for biological targets and diagnose the ccRCC at an early stage. Urine samples from patients were divided according ...
