Ultrasound guided foam sclerotherapy (UGFS) proved to be effective in recurrent varices. In this observational study from 2006 and 2012 we treated 142 neovascularization, 155 inguinal recurrence and 28 popliteal recurrent varices. For neovascularization 0.3-0.5% polidocanol (POL) sclerosant foam (SF) was injected for vein having diameter <3 mm and 0.5-1% POL or sodium tetradecylsulphate (STS) SF for higher vein diameters. The patients with residual sapheno-femoral or sapheno-popliteal junctions were ...

Ultrasmall superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles and magnetic resonance imaging provide a non-invasive method to detect and label tumor cells. These nanoparticles exhibit unique properties of superparamagnetism and can be utilized as excellent probes for magnetic resonance imaging. Most work has been performed using a magnetic resonance scanner with high field strength up to 7 T. Ultrasmall superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles may represent a suitable tool for labeling molecular probes ...

Most tumors of the central nervous system, especially glioblastoma, are refractory to treatment and invariably lethal. The aim of this study was to assess the ability of different interleukins (IL), IL-2, IL-12 and IL-21, produced by transduced glioma cells to activate an immune response and trigger intracranial tumor rejection. Such experiments were performed by the use of a slow-growing clone of GL261 (GL D2-60) that was used as orthotopic glioma model. Using GL D2-60-transduced cells, all cytokines ...

Intraoral digital impression is a viable alternative to conventional impression techniques and has been proven to be even more accurate than conventional materials. Nevertheless, there are cases in which the rheologic properties of conventional materials can be helpful. This article describes a method to overcome an insufficient sulcus-depth reading of intraoral scanners in challenging cases.

This study aimed to evaluate the most accurate impression technique for "All on Four" restoration, comparing conventional (CIG) and digital impressions (DIG).Patients randomly selected for this study were required to be edentulous in at least one arch, presenting with severe posterior mandibular or maxillary atrophy. All patients underwent full-arch immediate-load rehabilitations, which were fixed to a total of four implants (two axial and two tilted). Following implant placement, patients were stratified ...

We investigated the phenotype and function of thyroid tumor-, metastatic lymph node-, and peripheral bloodderived T lymphocytes of four patients with papillary thyroid cancer. Both phenotypic analysis of freshly isolated cells and clonal analysis, using a high efficiency cloning technique, were performed. For comparison, intrathyroid and peripheral blood T lymphocytes derived from patients with autoimmune thyroid diseases (Graves’ disease and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis) have been studied. In papillary ...

We have investigated at the clonal level the repertoire of intrathyroid and peripheral T lymphocytes in three patients with Graves' disease using a high efficiency cloning technique. Clonal efficiencies ranged from 10 to 31% for intrathyroid, and from 19 to 100% for peripheral T cells. In Graves' disease the phenotypic analysis showed similar percentages of CD3+ CD4+ CD8- and CD3+ CD4- CD8+ clones in thyroid infiltrates and peripheral blood. The functional evaluation showed similar or lower proportions ...

Blood samples of patients with severe respiratory allergic diseases contain increased numbers of T cells bearing surface HLA-DR antigens, indicating the presence of activated T cells. In the same group of patients, MLR3 and MLR4, two monoclonal antibodies (Mab) directed to subsets of activated peripheral T cells, recognize T cell percentages within the normal range. Thus, it seems possible that specialized subsets of activated T cells (HLA-DR+/MLR3-MLR4––) ...

ABSTRACT Homeoproteins encoded by genes of the Hox family are nuclear proteins believed to act as transcription factors and to participate in the determination of the body plan. Here we show that in several vertebrate cells, they exhibit a sub-nuclear localisation associated with the nucleolus. We used monoclonal antibodies to study the distribution of three homeoproteins, namely HOXB7, HOXC6 and HOXD4. The immunoreactivity to antibodies against HOXC6 protein in Xenopus laevis embryonic tissues ...

A bstract : Neuroblastoma (NB) is a solid tumor of infancy that presents a high rate of spontaneous regression, a phenomenon that likely reflects the activation of an apoptotic/differentiation program. Indeed, the level of expression of molecules involved in the regulation of apoptosis, such as p73 or survivin, is a prognostic factor in NB patients. The caspase‐8 gene (CASP8) encodes a key enzyme at the top of the apoptotic cascade. Although methylation of a putative regulatory region of the CASP8 gene ...

A subset of primary sensory neurons produces BDNF, which is implicated in control of nociceptive neurotransmission. We previously localized full-length trkB receptors on their terminals within lamina II. To functionally study these receptors, we here employed patch-clamp recordings, calcium imaging and immunocytochemistry on slices from 8-12 days post-natal rats. In this preparation, BDNF (100-500 ng/mL) enhances the release of sensory neurotransmitters (glutamate, substance P, CGRP) in lamina II ...

Abstract. T lymphocytes were franctionated according to their receptors for IgG (T G ) or IgM (T M ) and scored in 37 patients with Graves' disease (17 hyperthyroid and untreated, 10 euthyroid on antithyroid drugs, 10 in long-term remission after radioiodine therapy). T G percentages were very low both in untreated and in drugtreated patients. By contrast, normal T G levels were observed in patients in long-term remission. These data are consistent with the hypothesis of a defective suppressor cell activity ...

Synthetic oligonucleotides containing putative regulatory sequences are currently employed to identify and isolate genes coding for nuclear binding factors. Upstream DNA sequences of eukaryotic genes required for transcriptional activity and tissue specificity can be identified by means of biochemical techniques as well as computer analysis using homology searching. P66Shc regulates life span in mammals and is a critical component of the apoptotic response to oxidative stress. It functions as a downstream target of the tumor suppressor p53 and is indispensable for the ability of oxidative stress-activated p53 to induce apoptosis. The molecular mechanisms underlying the apoptogenic effect of p66Shc are unknown. Here we report the following three findings. (i) The apoptosome can be properly activated in vitro in the absence of p66Shc only if purified cytochrome ...

T cells isolated from thyroid tissue and peripheral blood of 2 patients with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis were studied by a high cloning efficiency microculture technique. Clonal efficiences of 37 and 24% were obtained from thyroid-derived T cell cultures, while 40 and 90% efficiencies resulted from peripheral-blood-derived cultures. A prevalence of T4––/T8+ T cell clones were found in thyroid infiltrates. The functional analysis of the clones demonstrated significantly higher proportions of clones with ...

Abstract Two human melanoma cell lines, extremely different in their thermal sensitivity, were pulse‐labelled with ( 35 S)‐methionine after 60 min of exposure at 42° C. For both cell lines, fractionation of the intrinsically labelled proteins by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) showed increased labelling of a polypeptide band of Mr 72,000, along with a slight reduction of overall protein synthesis. By two‐dimensional electrophoresis, the Mr 72,000 band resolved into multiple pattern components ...
