Maintenance of snakes at Butantan Institute started in the last century, intending to produce a different antivenom serum to reduce death caused by snakebites. Through a successful campaign coordinated by Vital Brazil, farmers sent venomous snakes to Butantan Institute by the railway lines with no cost. From 1908 to 1962, the snakes were kept in an outdoor serpentarium, where venom extraction was performed every 15 days. During this period, the snake average survival was 15 days. In 1963, the snakes ...

Concerning snake venoms, numerous authors worked with different species of Bothrops focusing on the ontogeny of these animals. However, according to PubMed database, no results on studies related to Bothrops jararacussu ontogeny were displayed until now. This fact led us to develop a greater interest in the venom ontogenetic variability of this species, which is little explored so far. Among snakes of the genus Bothrops, B. jararacussu was previously described as the one with highest myotoxic activity. ...

Despite coagulotoxicity being a primary weapon for prey capture by Bothrops species (lancehead pit vipers) and coagulopathy being a major lethal clinical effect, a genus-wide comparison has not been undertaken. To fill this knowledge gap, we used thromboelastography to compare 37 venoms, from across the full range of geography, taxonomy, and ecology, for their action upon whole plasma and isolated fibrinogen. Potent procoagulant toxicity was shown to be the main venom effect of most of the species ...

Abstract Background and Objective The current treatments of primary musculoskeletal low back pain (LBP) have a low to moderate efficacy, which might be improved by looking at the contribution of placebo effects. However, the size of true placebo effects in LBP is unknown. Therefore, a systematic review and meta‐analysis were executed of randomized controlled trials investigating placebo effects in LBP. Foramen of Winslow hernia is a rare surgical entity with very few reported cases in literature. Preoperative diagnosis used to be difficult but with emerging computed tomography technology, diagnosing this internal abdominal hernia has become easier. We present an unusual case report of foramen of Winslow hernia in a 77-year-old patient who presented with severe abdominal pain. The patient underwent laparoscopic repair of the hernia and recovered well postoperatively. This presentation of symptoms ...

The styrene grafted onto silicone rubber (SR-g-St) sheets were synthesized by the direct gamma radiation method in hexane/ethyl acetate solutions of styrene, and SR-g-2VN in tetrahydrofuran (THF) solutions of 2-vinylnaphtalene at room temperature. The grafting reaction was carried out at doses of 10–100 kGy, at a dose rate of 8.36 kGy h−1. The resistance to irradiation ...

The development of environmentally friendly materials based on non-toxic absorbent polymers, which can ensure high water absorption for several applications in biomedical or agricultural areas, is one of the most complexes problems. In the literature, the non-toxic biodegradable polymer poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) was chemically modified with glyoxylic acid to obtain poly(vinylglyoxylic acid) (PVGA) as a biodegradable superabsorbent hydrogel polymer (SHAP), but in fact, the chemical crosslinking reaction ...

Abstract Maternal metabolic status influences pregnancy and, consequently, the perinatal outcome. Resistin is a pro-inflammatory adipokine predominantly expressed and secreted by mononuclear cells, adipose tissue, and placental trophoblastic cells during pregnancy. Recently, we reported an inverse association between maternal resistin levels and fetal low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). Then, in this work, we used a human placental explant model and the trophoblast cell line JEG-3 to evaluate ...

UV-initiated crosslinking of electrospun poly(ethylene) oxide (PEO)/chitosan (CS) nanofibers doped with zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) was performed using pentaerythritol triaclyrate (PETA) as the photoinitiator and crosslinker agent. The influence of the addition of PETA to the PEO/CS diameter and crosslinking of nanofibers was evaluated. The effect of irradiation time on the morphology and swelling properties of the crosslinked nanofibers were investigated. For ZnO-NPs, the minimum inhibitory ...

Abstract The variability of the northern westerlies has been considered as one of the key elements for modern and past climate evolution. Their multiscale behavior and underlying control mechanisms, however, are incompletely understood, owing to the complex dynamics of Atlantic sea-level pressures. Here, we present a multi-annually resolved record of the westerly drift over the past 6,500 years from northern Italy. In combination with more than 20 other westerly-sensitive records, our results depict ...

This work examined the capability of Imperata cylindrica to respond, tolerate and accumulate Cu when growing at high Cu concentration (300 mg kg−1 of substrate) at different times of exposure (2, 14 and 21 days). The Cu accumulation in plants was examined by atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) and Cu localized by Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive X-Ray spectroscopy. Additionally, the phenolic compound identifications and concentrations were determined using liquid chromatography coupled ...

We present here a study about the limitations found when trying to develop an accurate atmospheric particulate matter forecasting model based on real data, and evidence that the time series of fine particulate matter concentration exhibit deterministic chaotic behavior. We have calculated the Lyapunov exponents of PM2.5 time series obtained from measurements from four monitoring stations located in the city of Santiago, Chile, in recent years. Values obtained for the largest Lyapunov exponents turned ...
