Background and Aim: To evaluate the role of lipoprotein abnormalities as risk factors for macroangiopathy in Type 2 diabetes. Methods and Results: This prospective nine-year follow-up study involved 113 Type 2 diabetic patients (50 men and 63 women, mean age 66.9±9.9 years), 37 of whom had clinical signs of coronary heart disease (CHD) and cerebrovascular disease (CVD) at baseline. During the follow-up, 32 patients died: 17 of CHD, five of CVD, and 10 of non-vascular causes. The patients who died because ...

Bone mineral density (BMD) and mineral metabolism were assessed in 54 patients with end-stage liver disease who were evaluated for orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) and assessed 3, 6, and 12 months after surgery in 26 patients who underwent OLT. Serum and urinary electrolyte and mineral levels, serum liver function test results, and parathyroid hormone (PTH), osteocalcin (BGP), 25-hydroxyvitamin D, and urinary hydroxyproline levels were assessed. BMD of the lumbar spine was measured at baseline ...

Abstract Background The dyslipidemia of type 2 diabetic patients is characterized by high VLDL, abnormal LDL composition and low HDL cholesterol concentrations. The aim of this study was to establish whether the type of dietary fats affects LDL size and density and HDL cholesterol concentrations in these patients. Methods Plasma phospholipid fatty acid composition, which reflects the type of dietary fatty acids, was quantified by gas chromatography. LDL relative flotation (LDL‐Rf), a measure of LDL ...

Patients with severe COVID-19 develop a life-threatening hyperinflammatory response to the virus. Interleukin (IL)-1 or IL-6 inhibitors have been used to treat this patient population, but the comparative effectiveness of these different strategies remains undetermined. We aimed to compare IL-1 and IL-6 inhibition in patients admitted to hospital with COVID-19, respiratory insufficiency, and hyperinflammation. This cohort study included patients admitted to San Raffaele Hospital (Milan, Italy) with ...

Mortality in patients with COVID-19 pneumonia and systemic hyperinflammation is high. We aimed to examine whether mavrilimumab, an anti-granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor receptor-α monoclonal antibody, added to standard management, improves clinical outcomes in patients with COVID-19 pneumonia and systemic hyperinflammation. This single-centre prospective cohort study included patients aged 18 years or older who were admitted to San Raffaele Hospital (Milan, Italy) with severe COVID- ...

Background Restraining maladaptive inflammation is considered a rationale strategy to treat severe coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) but available studies with selective inhibitors of pro-inflammatory cytokines have not provided unequivocal evidence of survival advantage. Late administration is commonly regarded as a major cause of treatment failure but the optimal timing for anti-cytokine therapy initiation in COVID-19 patients has never been clearly established. Objectives To identify a window ...

Objectives To assess the safety and efficacy of interleukin (IL)−6 blockade with sarilumab in patients with severe COVID-19 pneumonia and systemic hyperinflammation. Methods We conducted an open-label study of sarilumab in severe COVID-19 pneumonia (PaO 2 /FiO 2 <300 mm Hg) with hyperinflammation (elevated inflammatory markers and serum IL-6 levels). Sarilumab 400 mg was administered intravenously in addition to standard of care and results were compared with contemporary matched patients treated with ...

Mortality of patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and systemic inflammation is high. In areas of pandemic outbreak, the number of patients can exceed maximum capacity of intensive care units (ICUs), and, thus, these individuals often receive non-invasive ventilation outside of the ICU. Effective treatments for this population are needed urgently. Anakinra is a recombinant interleukin-1 receptor antagonist that might be beneficial in this patient ...

Chronic nonspecific low back pain is a frequent clinical condition affecting the general population and influencing disability level and quality of life. We performed a single-blinded, randomized, and controlled study to compare the effectiveness of manual pressure release (MPR) and electrical neuromodulation (ENM) treatments in the management of chronic low back pain. There were 20 patients with chronic low back pain randomly assigned to 6 treatment sessions with either technique. Both groups were ...

Systemic inflammation has been associated with corrected QT (QTc) interval prolongation. The role of inflammation on QTc prolongation in COVID-19 patients was investigated. Patients with a laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection admitted to IRCCS San Raffaele Scientific Institute (Milan, Italy) between March 14, 2020, and March 30, 2020 were included. QTc-I was defined as the QTc interval by Bazett formula in the first ECG performed during the hospitalization, before any new drug treatment; QTc- ...

Topic: 34. Thrombosis and vascular biology - Biology & Translational Research Background: Clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP) is associated with aging, increased risk of myeloid neoplasms, inflammation-related diseases, and cardiovascular diseases. Mutations occur most commonly in the transcriptional regulator genes DNMT3A, TET2 and ASXL1. Furthermore, JAK2 mutation has been linked with coronary heart disease (CAD). Abstract In 1593 Francesco Maria II della Rovere, Duke of Urbino, sent a number of diplomatic gifts to Philip II of Spain, intended for the crown prince, the future Philip III. The gifts included a silver model of a citadel accompanied by a set of compasses, the whereabouts of which are currently unknown; a small gilt-bronze sculptural group which has been identified with Giovanni Bandini’s The Hunt, today in the Prado Museum; and an illuminated manuscript recounting glorious episodes from the reign of the Emperor ...

BACKGROUND: Nowadays, the understanding of the functions of the macro- and micro-anatomy of connective tissue has been revised. The symptomatology of edema could be considered as a pathological manifestation of connective tissue (CT). For these reasons, the aim of this study is to demonstrate the correlation between edema symptomatology and the development of pain. Twenty-two female subjects with a CEAP score between 1 and 3 were recruited to take part in a rehabilitative protocol focused on edema ...
