Breathomics, the multidimensional molecular analysis of exhaled breath, includes analysis of exhaled breath with gas-chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and electronic noses (e-noses), and metabolomics of exhaled breath condensate (EBC), a non-invasive technique which provides information on the composition of airway lining fluid, generally by high-resolution nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy or MS methods. Metabolomics is the identification and quantification of small molecular weight ...

Permanent ACTH implants (USP Reference Standard and synthetic β1-24- corticotrophin) into the median eminence significantly depress blood corticosterone levels in the rat, suggesting that a "short" feedback loop might link synthesis and/or release of ACTH to pre-existing levels of the hormone. In mature mouse ovaries, smooth muscle cells (SMC) are as a rule concentrated in the perifollicular stroma of developing follicles but are also present in different ovarian regions. In growing antral follicles SMC form a conspicuous investment (‘capsule’) of concentric layers of stretched and elongated elements located in the zones of the theca externa. On the contrary, in antral follicles reaching approximately the same growth phase but with clear signs of atresia, the contractile capsule of the follicles ...

Newborns with high TSH at birth and with normal free T4 and normal or slightly elevated TSH at the confirmatory examination are considered false positive for congenital hypothyroidism. We evaluated thyroid function, thyroid antibodies, thyroid volume and morphology, thyroperoxidase and TSH receptor genes, and auxological data in 56 false positive children at 16–44 months of age. In these children thyroid function at confirmatory examination was fully normal in 33 (TSH, 0.8–4.9 mU/liter; group I) ...

Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) is a cytokine that affects endothelial cells' function by changing their antithrombotic potential to a net procoagulant effect. Only a few data have so far been reported for the pathophysiologic role of TNF in vascular diseases in the involvement of microvessels and/or macrovessels and a prothrombotic state. In the present study the authors evaluated plasma TNF (and interleukin-1) levels in 20 patients with chronic arterial obstructive disease (CAOD) with intermittent ...

Twelve kidney allografts removed 3 to 98 months (mean, 44.8 months) after transplantation were investigated. The presence and severity of intertubular capillary changes, which were characterized by splitting and multilayering of the basement membrane, were carefully noted. These changes were graded as mild, moderate, and severe according to the number of basement membrane layers. They were found in both cortical and medullary capillaries in all but one kidney and were always associated with transplant ...

Thermomechanical and morphological properties of blends of epoxy monomers and hydroxyl and epoxy functionalized hyperbranched polyesters have been studied. Different properties of the blends were found by changing the cure cycles (a precure step followed by a postcure at higher temperature). All the blends showed phase separation with a particulate morphology. Through the addition of the hydroxyl-ended modifiers, rather than the epoxy-ended, an increase of the viscosity and of the reactivity of the ...

This contribution focuses on organolanthanide-mediated hydroamination processes and analyzes the hydroamination/cyclization of a prototypical aminoalkene, NH2(CH2)3CHCH2, catalyzed by Cp2LaCH(TMS)2, using density functional theory. The reaction is found to occur in two steps, namely, cyclization to form La−C and C−N bonds, and subsequent La−C protonolysis. Calculations have been carried out for (i) insertion of the olefinic moiety into the La−N bond via a four-center transition state and (ii) protonolysis ...

Summary In the attempt to find a peripheral blood biological marker that could mirror the dysregulated microenvironment of Hodgkin Lymphoma ( HL ), we analysed the amount of myeloid‐derived suppressor cells ( MDSC ), including the three main sub‐types (monocytic, granulocytic and CD 34 + fraction). The absolute MDSC count was investigated in 60 consecutive newly diagnosed HL patients and correlated with clinical variables at diagnosis and outcome. Patients received standard‐of‐care chemotherapy with the exception ...

Several guidelines on adeno-tonsillar disease have been proposed in recent years and some discrepancies in relation both to clinical manifestations and indications for surgical treatment have emerged. The aim of the study was to verify what influence (adeno)-tonsillectomy guidelines have had on the clinical behaviour of ENT specialists in Italy. Our study is a retrospective and multi-centre case series with chart review. The survey involved 14,770 children, aged between the ages of 2 and 11, who had ...

We propose a new computational scheme of the Celada–Seiden model ( CS model ) for the simulation of the Immune System response. This new approach is closer to the classical definition of cellular automata than the previous one. It has the advantage of achieving the same results obtained with the CS model (IMMSIM) with a lower computational effort.

Renal neuroendocrine tumors (NET) are rare neoplasms of unknown histogenesis. To the best of our knowledge, 40 such cases have been described, 11 of which arising in horseshoe kidneys (HSK). We report an additional case of a NET associated with a HSK occurring in a 45-year-old man. A clinicopathological review of the reported cases together with an updated follow-up of such tumors arising in HSK is provided. The present data show that NET associated with HSK present a better prognosis than those occurring ...

The purpose of the work is to investigate the mechanism that underlies the development of unsteady loads by a novel L-shaped Gurney flap conceived to perform vibration control on rotorcraft blades. The device is combination of a spoiler with a Gurney flap. Exploiting the capabilities of a Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes flow solver employing the overset mesh approach, several numerical simulations are carried out at low Mach number. These simulations are used to develop a physically based linear ...

Due to their intrinsic complexity, it is not easy to model the mechanical behaviour of biomaterials. Despite the challenges they faced, some researchers have presented mathematical models to describe some aspects of the mechanical response of soft tissues. Since most of the materials of biological interest are composites made of different constituents reinforced by collagen and/or elastin fibres, material dispersion and anisotropy are non-negligible. Within the theory of elasticity, several models ...

Black hole X-ray transients show a variety of state transitions during their outburst phases, characterized by changes in their spectral and timing properties. In particular, power density spectra (PDS) show quasi periodic oscillations (QPOs) that can be related to the accretion regime of the source. We looked for type-C QPOs in the disc-dominated state (i.e. the high soft state) and in the ultra-luminous state in the RXTE archival data of 12 transient black hole X-ray binaries known to show QPOs during ...

We evaluated the release of tissue factor pathway inhibitor (TFPI) induced by defibrotide (DF), a single-stranded, negatively charged polydeoxyribonucleotide extracted from mammalian organ. Ten normal volunteers were injected with an intravenous bolus of 400 mg DF and 2,000 IU unfractionated heparin (UFH). In addition, three volunteers were also injected with an intravenous bolus of 2,000 anti-Xa U of two low-molecular-weight heparins (LMWHs), enoxaparin and nadroparin. UFH caused a 4-fold increase ...

The binding of Streptococcus pneumoniae to collagen is likely an important step in the pathogenesis of pneumococcal infections, but little is known of the underlying molecular mechanisms. Streptococcal surface repeats (SSURE) are highly conserved protein domains present in cell wall adhesins from different Streptococcus species. We find here that SSURE repeats of the pneumococcal adhesin plasminogen and fibronectin binding protein B (PfbB) bind to various types of collagen. Moreover, deletion of the ...

ABSTRACT This work presents the capabilities of a novel L-shaped trailing-edge Gurney flap as a device for vibration reduction. The primary effect of this L-tab is represented by a modification of the reference aerofoil mean line shape through by two counter-rotating vortical structures created at the trailing edge. The comparison of the aerodynamic loads generated by the novel L-tab Gurney flap and a classical trailing-edge flap allows to estimate the ranges of reduced frequency where the L-tab ...

51 Cr‐platelet kinetics study was performed in 197 patients with chronic ITP after corticosteroid therapy had failed to induce a long lasting remission. The incidence of splenic, spleno‐hepatic, hepatic and diffuse platelet sequestration site was 58 %, 17 %, 6% and 19 %, respectively. Splenic and spleno‐hepatic sequestration sites were more frequent in patients less than 30 years old and in patients with a platelet count lower than 50 times 10 9 /1. Ill patients were splenectomized shortly after the study. ...

Cystic fibrosis is the most common lethal recessive disorder among Caucasians. Over 1500 mutations have been identified in cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator disease-gene so far. A large variability of the clinical phenotype has been observed both in cystic fibrosis patients bearing the same genotype, and in affected sibpairs. Thus, genes inherited independently from cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator could modulate the clinical expression of cystic fibrosis. We ...
