Summary Few data are available on the determinants and characteristics of post-caesarean section (CS) surgical site infections (SSIs) in resource-limited settings. We conducted a prospective observational cohort study to evaluate the rates, determinants, and microbiological characteristics of post-CS SSI at the Dodoma Regional Referral Hospital (DRRH) Gynaecology and Obstetrics Department in Tanzania. Spanning a three-month period, all pregnant women who underwent CS were enrolled and followed up for 30 days. ...

In 34 chronic alcoholics, subdivided into two groups according to the state of the blood-brain barrier (BBB), β-lipotropin (β-LPH), β-endorphin (β-EP), ACTH and Cortisol levels were determined in basal conditions in the plasma and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Hormonal concentrations were correlated with brain damage and mnesic function. The results indicate the reduced CSF β-EP content in chronic alcoholics and suggest that peripheral β-EP may penetrate into the CSF compartment when there is BBB damage. ...

Background. Alport syndrome is a clinically and genetically heterogeneous nephropathy characterized by glomerular basement membrane lesions often associated with hearing loss and ocular anomalies. While the X-linked and the autosomal recessive forms are well known, the autosomal dominant form is not well acknowledged. Methods. We have clinically investigated 38 patients with a diagnosis of autosomal dominant Alport syndrome belonging to eight different families. The analysis of the COL4A4 gene was ...

Abstract Background Adverse drug reaction (ADR) is a leading but under‐recognised cause of illness, particularly in frail subjects with multiple comorbidities. Aim To investigate the frequency, patterns and outcomes of ADR as a cause of hospitalisation in elderly patients admitted to an internal medicine ward. Methods We performed a retrospective observational study including every patient aged over 65 years who was admitted to our department during a 12‐month period. Patients admitted to short‐stay (< ...

Background Although white matter hyperintensities (WMH) volumetric assessment is now customary in research studies, inconsistent WMH measures among homogenous populations may prevent the clinical usability of this biomarker. Purpose To determine whether a point estimate and reference standard for WMH volume in the healthy aging population could be determined. Study Type Systematic review and meta‐analysis. Population In all, 9716 adult subjects from 38 studies reporting WMH volume were retrieved ...

SYNOPSIS In the light of Sicuteri's central theory of migraine, reserpine‐induced attacks have been related to a central depletion of monoamine stores, 5HT and DA in particular. Reserpine is known to increase serum prolactin (PRL) levels. The PRL response to reserpine, before and after treatment with drugs affecting DA and 5HT pathways, has been used as a tool to clarify the role of central neurotransmitters in migraine pathogenesis. Twenty‐nine migraine patients and a control group underwent i.v. ...

Plasma levels of beta-endorphin (beta EP), beta-lipotropin (beta LPH). ACTH and cortisol were measured in basal conditions and after traditional Chinese acupuncture (TCA). Basal beta LPH and beta EP plasma levels (pg/ml) in the DCH patients (57.6 +/- 9.5 and 16.8 +/- 2.5, respectively; M +/- SE) were lower than those found in the controls (83.6 +/- 13.7 and 26.0 +/- 6.1; p less than ...

The role of alcohol consumption on pathophysiology of atherosclerosis is not completely well established. Past studies were conducted with different methodological approaches, sometimes leading to opposing conclusions. The aim of this study was to determine the weight of alcohol intake on carotid atherosclerosis in a group of subjects asymptomatic for cardio-cerebrovascular diseases. They were examined by ultrasonographic assessment during the period 1993 through 1997. Common risk factors of atherosclerosis ...
