ABO blood group antigens are expressed on von Willebrand factor (VWF) and glycosylation patterns influence circulating VWF levels. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of ABO blood type on tissue-associated VWF protein levels. We selected 35 formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded pulmonary tissue blocks obtained at autopsy from decedents who died from pulmonary embolism with known ABO blood groups (O, A, B and AB phenotypes), prepared tissue microarrays (TMAs) and stained TMAs with antibodies ...

ABSTRACT During 1981, pond culture trials with prawns, Macrobrachium rosenbergii , were conducted with 7 private farmers in order to obtain information on the potential for prawn farming in South Carolina. Some farmers were able to control water quality while other farmers had little or no ability to modify pond environmental conditions. Seed stock, feed, management, and harvesting assistance were provided by research personnel, while daily monitoring of pond conditions and feeding were the responsibility ...

Studies have reported a positive relationship between alcohol consumption and general levels of affluence in society. The present paper suggests that drug use and abuse should also be related to affluence since, to some extent, alcohol and drugs are substitute products. Levels of drug abuse and levels of affluence, in society, change over time. Therefore, indicators of affluence (economic and health conditions) and various types of illicit drug abuse in five countries were examined for the period ...

Summary A follow‐up study of cannabis possession offenders was replicated several years later in order to determine if personal and legal characteristics, individual costs and administrative practices had changed. The two samples were remarkably similar in their characteristics and in reported effects of criminalization at both times; what had altered was the greater efficiency with which police and courts dealt with offenders. It is suggested that this streamlining has institutionalized ‘cannabis ...

AbstractDrug use must be understood within the larger context of deviance. Certainly, the tendency to examine drug use in isolation from the more general study of delinquent behavior requires redress. By definition, illicit drug use is delinquent behavior. In the present paper, a theory of delinquent behavior is applied to marijuana use. A powerful explanation of marijuana use is offered by this modified version of social control theory.

Women's use of prescription medication exceeds that of men's and yet is not viewed with the alarm and disapproval that accompanies women's lower levels of use of alcohol and illicit drugs. Reports in the media, based on anecdotal accounts, have identified women as a group at particular risk for cocaine addiction and have suggested that their problems with cocaine are greater than men's. After reviewing the scientific literature and analyzing the results of an original research study, this paper ...

In this paper, drug prevention programs in 29 countries are reviewed and summarized. The material was gathered from the reports that each country had prepared for the World Health Organization project on Guidelines for Drug Abuse Prevention. Each report provided a detailed schedule of background data on drug abuse and prevention programs in that country. The sophistication of prevention programs varies considerably from one country to another and depends on the degree and nature of the problem. ...

This study examines the relationships between the level of narcotic drug abuse and the prevailing socioeconomic and health conditions and education levels in 152 countries. Drug abuse, as classified in this paper, is related to socioeconomics, health, and education in complex ways. The data do not support the proposition that drug abuse is more common among technologically developed societies than among developing ones. The best predictors of drug abuse were those related to health.

Treatment for osteosarcoma, a paediatric bone cancer with no therapeutic advances in over three decades, is limited by a lack of targeted therapies. Osteosarcoma frequently metastasises to the lungs, and only 20% of patients survive 5 years after the diagnosis of metastatic disease. We found that WNT5B is the most abundant WNT expressed in osteosarcoma tumours and its expression correlates with metastasis, histologic subtype and reduced survival.

Michael W. Kattan, Glenn Heller, Murray F. Brennan,
Abstract The majority of staging systems focus on the definition of stage, and, therefore, prediction of prognosis. In the current era of clinical trial research, it has become apparent that the clinical stage alone is not sufficient to assess patient risk of treatment failure. As the number of biological markers increases, our ability to partition the traditional disease classification system improves, and our ability to predict patient success continues to increase. One approach to quantifying ...

A relatively inexpensive unit based upon solid-state operational amplifiers is described; its modular design makes it an extremely versatile instrument for many electrochemical techniques, e.g., normal direct current polarography and linear sweep voltammetry, cyclic voltammetry, alternating current polarography, and coulometry and electrolysis at controlled electrode potential. It can be readily adapted to many other functions. Une unité modulaire solide relativement peu coûteuse est décrite constituant ...
