The gekkonid genus Goggia includes eight described species of mostly small-bodied rock dwelling gecko endemic to the southwestern portion of southern Africa, ... and extreme southern Namibia. Previous studies focused on Goggia have employed external morphology and allozyme electrophoresis, but ... produced. We have generated a molecular phylogeny of Goggia including all named species and multiple individuals within ... between eastern and western species of small-bodied Goggia, with additional divergences also showing structure strongly correlated ...

Abstract Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) detection has become the gold standard for diagnosis and typing of enterovirus (EV) and human parechovirus (HPeV) infections. Its effectiveness depends critically on using the appropriate sample types and high assay sensitivity as viral loads in cerebrospinal fluid samples from meningitis and sepsis clinical presentation can be extremely low. This study evaluated the sensitivity and specificity of currently used commercial and in‐house diagnostic and typing ...

We searched for an optical counterpart to the first gravitational wave source discovered by LIGO (GW150914), using a combination of the Pan-STARRS1 wide-field telescope and the PESSTO spectroscopic follow-up programme. As the final LIGO sky maps changed during analysis, the total probability of the source being spatially coincident with our fields was finally only 4.2 per cent. Therefore we discuss our results primarily as a demonstration of the survey capability of Pan-STARRS and spectroscopic capability ...

This paper presents an integral sliding mode (ISM) formulation for the torque-vectoring (TV) control of a fully electric vehicle. The performance of the controller is evaluated in steady-state and transient conditions, including the analysis of the controller performance degradation due to its real-world implementation. This potential issue, which is typical of sliding mode formulations, relates to the actuation delays caused by the drivetrain hardware configuration, signal discretization, and vehicle ...

The plasma membrane–cytoskeleton interface is a dynamic structure participating in a variety of cellular events. Moesin and ezrin, proteins from the ezrin/radixin/moesin (ERM) family, provide a direct linkage between the cytoskeleton and the membrane via their interaction with phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate (PIP2). PIP2 binding is considered as a prerequisite step in ERM activation. The main objective of this work was to compare moesin and ezrin interaction with PIP2-containing membranes in ...

Fully electric vehicles with individually controlled motor drives allow the continuous actuation of direct yaw moment control in order to enhance vehicle safety and the handling performance by achieving a set of reference understeer characteristics. For applications on real vehicles, the control structure must provide ease of implementation, robustness and tunability. This paper discusses an integral sliding mode formulation for torque-vectoring control, which fulfils these requirements. The control ...

Worldwide, there are a few examples of laws seeking to reduce the availability of Electronic Gambling Machines, one being a regional law introduced in Piedmont in 2018 that limited the times and places where gambling is allowed, causing an overall decrease in gambling frequency and expenditure and a heated public debate. This study investigates gamblers' opinions and perspectives on why and how the new regulation impacted their habits. 'Gambling trajectories' were explored through 60 in-depth individual ...

Tendon and ligament injuries are a frequent and debilitating issue that affects many patients worldwide. The predominant solution is the suture thread, which is not without potential side effects and limitations. Implantable medical devices have gained more attention as an alternative approach. However, due to the many challenges of the inner body environment (limited available space, chemically aggressive environment, etc), the development of suitable devices is not exempt from practical and technical ...
