It generally accepted that most building structures shall exhibit a nonlinear response when subjected to medium-high intensity earthquakes. It is currently known, however, that this phenomenon is not properly modelled in the majority of cases, especially at the design stage, where only simple linear methods have effectively been used. Recently, as a result of the exponential progress of computational tools, nonlinear modelling and analysis have gradually been brought to a more promising level. A ...

Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) are a prominent component of the modern digital transformation, which combines the dynamics of the physical processes with those of software and networks. Critical infrastructures have built-in CPS, and assessing its risk is crucial to avoid significant losses, both economic and social. As CPS are increasingly attached to the world’s main industries, these systems’ criticality depends not only on software efficiency and availability but also on cyber-security awareness. ...

Edge Computing (EC) is a recent architectural paradigm that brings computation close to end-users with the aim of reducing latency and bandwidth bottlenecks, which 5G technologies are committed to further reduce, while also achieving higher reliability. EC enables computation offloading from end devices to edge nodes. Deciding whether a task should be offloaded, or not, is not trivial. Moreover, deciding when and where to offload a task makes things even harder and making inadequate or off-time decisions ...

Microalgae are known to have higher photosynthetic efficiencies when compared to land-based plants. The use of microalgae biomass as a protein source is attracting attention due to its interesting protein composition and sustainable character when compared to conventional animal and plant protein-based sources. Nonetheless, the existence of a rigid cell wall is typical for most microalgae species, and this presents a serious obstacle to a higher bioaccessibility of their valuable protein fractions. ...

Conceptual modeling describes the physical or social aspects of the world abstractly, encompassing the interpretation of data production, gathering, visualization, and analysis. The quality of the data analysis system will limit the excellence of any decision-making process. Thus, accurately specifying the physical data model is essential. The primary goal of our work is to compare tools that can create this physical model. We recognize several types of data models, but we only include the relational ...

Although invasive animals can compete with native species for resources, detrimental competition for food is seldom reported in the avian invasions literature. In temperate climates, food limitation and energetic stress are higher during winter and, thus, winter diets might reveal competition that is not apparent during the rest of the year. We compared autumn and winter diets of the invasive common waxbill Estrilda astrild in northwest Iberia, and of the native bird most similar to it in foraging ...

The residential sector is one of the sectors with the highest rates of electricity consumption worldwide. For years, many studies have been presented in order to minimize energy consumption at the residential level. The idea of such studies is that the residential customer (RC) is the interested party of their own consumption. Moreover, the algorithms that have been developed to predict and manage the energy consumption, also analyze the behavior of the loads, with the objective of minimizing the ...

Society is facing big demographic changes. In 2050, it is expected that the number of elders will reach 1500 million (about 16% of the world population). As people age, they become more dependent on assistance services. Care and assistance organizations start failing, as the number of people who need help increases beyond their ability to comply. The creation of an ecosystem for Ambient Assisted Living, facilitating partnerships creation between service providers, is proposed as a strategy to improve ...

The Janus kinase (JAK) family of protein tyrosine kinases are activated in response to a wide variety of external stimuli. Here we have investigated whether the janus kinase 2 (JAK2) is involved in the induction of nitric oxide synthase type II (iNOS) expression in a mouse fetal skin dendritic cell line (FSDC). In FSDC the expression of iNOS protein and nitric oxide production, in response to the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulus (5 μg/ml), is inhibited by the specific inhibitor of the JAK2, tyrphostin ...

In this report, we demonstrate that a fetal mouse skin-derived dendritic cell line produces nitric oxide (NO) in response to the endotoxin [lipopolysaccharide (LPS)] and to cytokines [tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF)]. Expression of the inducible isoform of NO synthase (iNOS) was confirmed by immunofluorescence with an antibody against iNOS. The tyrosine kinase inhibitor genistein decreased LPS- and GM-CSF-induced nitrite ([Formula: see text]) ...

Large bowel obstruction can result in significant morbidity and mortality, especially in cases of acute complete obstruction. There are many possible causes, the most common in adults being colorectal cancer. Endometriosis is a benign disease, and the most affected extragenital location is the bowel, especially the rectosigmoid junction. However, transmural involvement and acute occlusion are very rare events. We report an exceptional case of acute large bowel obstruction as the initial presentation ...
