This study describes the production of native l-asparaginases by submerged fermentation from Aspergillus strains and provides the biochemical characterization, kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of the three ones that stood out for high l-asparaginase production. For comparison, the commercial fungal l-asparaginase was also studied. Both commercial and l-asparaginase from Aspergillus oryzae CCT 3940 showed optimum activity and stability in the pH range from 5 to 8 and the asparaginase from Aspergillus ...

Interspecies transmission is an important mechanism of evolution and contributes to rotavirus A (RVA) diversity. In order to evaluate the detection frequency, genetic diversity, epidemiological characteristics and zoonotic potential of RVA strains in faecal specimens from humans and animals cohabiting in the same environment in the department of Cusco, Peru, by molecular analysis, 265 faecal specimens were obtained from alpacas, llamas, sheep and shepherd children, and tested for RVA by RT-PCR. We previously reported that the phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5) inhibitor sildenafil prevented neurodegeneration but not learning deficits in middle-aged rats that were subjected to the permanent, three-stage, four-vessel occlusion/internal carotid artery (4-VO/ICA) model of chronic cerebral hypoperfusion (CCH). In the present study, we examined whether the PDE3 inhibitor cilostazol alleviates the loss of long-term memory (i.e., retrograde amnesia) caused by CCH. The effect of sildenafil was then compared ...

ABSTRACT: Technological and tissue engineering have enabled available, biologically inert, and low cost materials to be considered as viable alternatives in the surgical treatment of long bone fractures in birds. The aim of this study was to microscopically analyse osteotomized humerus of birds following the insertion of solid laser-sintered polyamide 12 rods in order to detect foreign body reaction and, thus, verify the bioinert property of the material in the bone fracture environment. Polyamide ...

Alternative sources of fuel have been a concern in the last few decades. The growth of urbanization and industrialization will lead to the exhaustion of fossil fuels, attracting studies on alternative routes. The main aim of this study was to produce biodiesel from waste cooking oil (WCO) by methyl transesterification using sodium hydroxide as a catalyst. For this, the physicochemical parameters of biodiesel were studied in triplicate (density, acidity, saponification, viscosity, corrosiveness to ...

Partial least squares (PLS) regression models were developed to quantify CaCO 3 in cement and to study the CO 2 effect on the material matrix.PLS results presented good correlation coefficient (R 2 = 0.9995) and low estimation error (RMSEP = 3.61 mg CaCO 3 /g cement). From the results, it was observed that the portlandite consumption, the increase in CaCO 3 content and the C-S-H decalcification-polymerization are the most relevant cement chemical transformations. Thus, it was concluded that: i) it is possible ...

Identification of bioactive peptides is an increasingly important target for food chemists, particularly in consideration of the widespread application of proteolytic enzymes in food processing. Because the characterization of small peptides by LC-MS/MS is challenging, we optimized a dimethyl labeling technique to facilitate small peptide identification, using almond proteins as a model. The method was validated by comparing the MS/MS spectra of standards and almond-derived peptides in their nonderivatized ...

Virus-induced infections of the central nervous system (CNS) are among the most serious problems in public health and can be associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality, mainly in low- and middle-income countries, where these manifestations have been neglected. Typically, herpes simplex virus 1 and 2, varicella-zoster, and enterovirus are responsible for a high number of cases in immunocompetent hosts, whereas other herpesviruses (for example, cytomegalovirus) are the most common in immunocompromised ...

Food analysis covers aspects of quality and detection of possible frauds to ensure the integrity of the food. The arsenal of analytical instruments available for food analysis is broad and allows the generation of a large volume of information per sample. But this instrumental information may not yet give the desired answer; it must be processed to provide a final answer for decision making. The possibility of discarding non-informative and/or redundant signals can lead to models of better accuracy, ...

This study proposes the application of basalt powder (BP) as a supplementary cementitious material (SCM) in cement formulations for Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) wells. From experimental results, we identified that the BP can be characterized as a filled-pozzolanic SCM, presenting low pozzolanic activity, large inert fraction, and particle size significantly smaller than class G cement. Formulations with low basalt powder (≤ 0.5 wt.%) content presented the greatest potential for application in CCS ...

Abstract The bioconversion of hydrolyzed whey permeate into an oil‐rich biomass by Mucor circinelloides was scaled up from 250 mL to 4 L with the use of an aerated stirred tank bioreactor. Biomass production and oil accumulation were strongly influenced by agitation speed (99–451 rpm) and aeration rate (0.29–1.70 vvm). Higher agitation and aeration rates (e.g., >400 rpm, >1 vvm), resulted in significantly higher biomass yield due to increased oxygen transfer capabilities and better mixing. Additionally, ...

We prove a new Morse-Sard type theorem for the asymptotic critical values of semi-algebraic mappings and a new fibration theorem at infinity for $C^2$ mappings. We show the equivalence of three different types of regularity conditions which have been used in the literature in order to control the asymptotic behaviour of mappings. The central role of our picture is played by the $t$-regularity and its bridge toward the $\rho$-regularity which implies topological triviality at infinity.
